France 2-1 Italy (Sun 9/7) Average age of the scorers? 31
A tough call indeed. But hope and good vibes will prevail over cynical arrogance. At least in my world.
P. S.: what does ZZ mean in french? I don't know and don't want to read through a long thread...

time to jump on the bandwagon. GO FRANCE!!
both my mother and father's grandparents came to canada from france, but i felt kind of dirty cause my inlaws are dutch and they got me a dutch soccer shirt from holland a month ago that i was wearing. (it actually got me a lot of free heinekens and grolsh so it has been worthwhile.) plus i don't speak french so it is kind of embarrassing wearing a french jersey and then have people come up to me and start speaking french.
FRANCE 9, ITALY 0

I want France to win. It feels strange to say that. However, we're talking sweepstake time here kids, so yay! France to win (and to score the goal of the tournament, preferably).

Can the first person to learn what exactly set off Zidane pls post here? Thanks. Not an interpretation or guess, but an actual news report or interview.

It's just in amazement that someone of his experience could do that in the World Cup final. You almost have to laugh. I think he bottled it, didn't want to take a penalty or something. But, honestly, just astounded by it.
You all must feel that magnified a hundredfold. I thought France were the better team and deserved to win. Who knows if what Zidane did made a difference.

Guess we'll never know. It was fun to see how the media spent the last 3 days depicting ZZ as a saint, making portraits of him that always hid his bad gestures (and he's had quite a few during his career). Yeah, he loses his nerves sometimes. Doesn't make him less great. But I wonder how this last match of his will be seen in a few years.

You don't think he'll explain or Materazzi will at least give some idea? He almost owes it to the French to explain.
Hopefully everyone will remember him for the 1998 WC rather than this, but as his last game, it can't help but leave a sour taste on a glorious career. I don't think it really made a difference in the end apart from to make him look like a tit.

Jesus Christ. What the smeg was he thinking?
I reckon Materazzi got him with the old chestnut 'I shagged yer mum. She was shit!'.

Tonight I got a ride from an Algerian cabbie who could not stop freaking out about it, went on and on about how he dishonoured all Algerians, etc. I can't imagine that even an anti-Arab (or anti-quesadilla) remark from Marco Materazzi or anybody else would have him end his career like that. I guess he really didn't want to play this world cup?

Yesterday I supported France just because it was Zizou's last match. After what he did... oh well... I always find a good excuse to be in the winners' side.

It does seem to be the case that the assistant referee didn't see the incident and got his information from the fourth official who had watched a video replay. In which case, it shouldn't have been a sending off in the match (though I'm sure FIFA would have done something retrospectively).
What are the French media saying about it this morning?

That was the funniest thing I'd seen in ages. Head butt to the heart, what a killer move. I just wish he had executed it with seconds to go, leaving France with 10 in the final was a little stupid, but. What a way to go out with a bang. I wish most of life's problems could be resolved by The Zidane. Best highlight of the World Cup for me. Good on you, ZZ. Materazzi's always been an idiot. Happy retirement, genius!
Now the man's legend has been cemented. |

Newspapers are saying this morning that Matterazzi called ZZ a 'terrorist'. In which case, you can sort of sympathise with Zizou.

Which do you think was best, Zidane's head butt to Materazzi's chest or Cantona's karate kick on the Crystal Palace supporter?
