I thought it was time to start the World Cup thread. The seeded teams have been determined today and are as follows:
Brazil
England
Spain
Germany
Mexico
France
Argentina
Italy
I was hoping for a France-Mexico in the group matches so I'm a bit disappointed. I'll try to get tickets to see Mexico play so I hope they'll be lucky on the draw.

I'm sure if they got rid of Sven, then England would have a good chance of at least making it to the semi's. As it is, like Cheeseman said, Brazil favourites, with Argentina and Italy in the mix.
Simon, slightly off topic, but er...Southampton? Redknapp? Thoughts?

Seriously, don't start me... How classy is it to join a club as manager, get them relegated (aside from Liverpool, the team who was last relegated longest ago), find you're struggling in the new season, bail on your team, try and go back to the club you acrimoniously split from before, then try and bow and scrape your way back there, only to be turned down by your old boss.
We'll trade: you can have Harry Redknapp, we'll have Strach back.
Actually, our caretaker team is Dave Bassett and Dennis Wise, I can live with that.

:D I thought that's how you would feel. It's pretty shambolic, and yes, I thought Redknapp would have more class than that. He should be ashamed.
No trade. Strachan has got us playing good, fast, passing football and improved the fitness of the players. He's done fantastically well with the younger players coming through also. I think a lot of Celtic fans have been won over (helped by a tragedy of a Rangers team :D)

Flippantly, I guess anyone who can motivate players, plays to the strengths of the team and can implement different tactics as required.
Realistically, I really don't know. Some poeple want Big Sam, Stuart Pearce has been mentioned, maybe Curbishley. I think it'll be an English manager next.

I wouldn't mind seeing Big Sam as the next England manager (if only to send Bolton on the slide), or Curbishley, but I think it's too early for Pearce.
As long as they keep their hands off Paul Jewell I don't mind!

The netherlands played ok in the qualificationgames
I think they can make it to at least the semi-final
(like in 1998, and at the Euro 2000 and 2004 cup)

The only reason England won't win it will be either down to bad luck, bad penalites or bad referring decisions. The usual story then.
Actually, I said back in 2000 that we would win the 2006. If we do now, I will be gutted that I didn't put some money on it.

yes. Serbia & Montegnegro are in a separate pot so that no group has three European nations. They will go in with Brazil, Argentina or Mexico.

I'd have taken Switzerland over Poland. Can you get Poland if you had them in the qualifying stages?
Worst case would maybe be : Paraguay, US, Netherlands

Seems a bit unfair that the US is likely to have a tougher draw since they won't get a push over team from pool 4, but we also have easier qualifiying.
I wonder how much of the dismissing of US soccer ("we can take USA everyday") is European snobbery and looking at the past rather than the present. We not an elite team, but we're good enough to threaten beating most teams. |

Well, you couldn't beat Scotland.
Much of this is down to Sepp Blatter wanting to give the African nations a good chance of getting through, they were instrumental in his election to FIFA president.
