So there is a heavy emphasis on guitar based bands in the off topic section (understandable obviously), and althought rock bands were the basis of my music develpment, i also like other genres..
What is everyones favourtite/reccommened NON ROCK music/albums..?
Couple of my favourite rap albums
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication Quannam Collective - Spectrum Jurrasic 5 - Power in Numbers (don't pass up an op to see these guys live!)
Will edit to include dance/electronic and producers!
I didn't check to see if there was a thread on this already - but maybe new one in order anyway?? |

This is a great topic. I really like Dvorak's New World Symphony and the song "Lulu" by Mouse On Mars. I like some Johnny Cash. "he Loved Him Madly" by Miles Davis is thirty minutes of exciting and interesting atmosphere. "Gaurdame de Las Vacas" by Luis Navarez is worth mentioning. And I really like the dub interpretation of Dark Side of the Moon by a band whose name escapes me. |

Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" quartet (definitely one of my desert island discs) Prokofiev sonatas by Sviatoslav Richter (especially #6 Op.82) Symphony #2 by Jean Sibelius Erik Satie!
Bojan Z "Solobsession" Romano, Sclavis, Texier "Carnet de Routes" Horace Silver "Song For My Father" Thelonious Monk "Misterioso" (just because it's the first one I heard) Miles Davis, hard to pick one, "Kind Of Blue" is always a safe recommendation
Four Tet "Pause" Hood "Cold House" Psapp "Tiger My Friend" RJD2 "Deadringer"

Thanks guys - could you also say what genre these tracks/albums are cos my idea is to track down some of it and make up my own mind.
When i say no rock - what i really mean is non-traditional instruments maybe - Smile for instance would be too close, although BW is outstanding, he just a bit close to what i don't want to talk about on this thread if you know what i mean!
Another few favourites on the chillout side.. dr rockit - cafe de flore rcyksopp - so easy goldfrapp - lovely head
Keep them coming!

Jedi, you are a man of superior taste: I was also going to include albums by Four Tet and Hood, although different ones.
Four Tet - Rounds Hood - Outside Closer Wagner - Tristan und Isolde Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (goes without saying, but for all its obviousness its still so awesome it hurts)

Ladytron - They've been called Electroclash. The Knife - Electronica v's Cindy Lauper Animal Collective - Just weird. Boards of Canada - Very ambient, but spooky and beautiful. PanSonic - Pure evil. Scott Walker - King of poetic warbling. Liars/Suicide - Noise terrorists. The Streets - Not someone everyboby would like on first impressions, but will learn to love. International Submarine Band - Country.

3 Feet High and Rising was great, but that and the next one are the only ones I ever heard, and that has been several years. Don't know how the new stuff (if there is) sounds.

John Zorn, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and The Mahavishnu Orchestra for jazzy type stuff. Listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra now it doesn't seem weird or crazy in the slightest though it must have blown people away when it first came out.
William Elliot Whitmore, Joshua Black Wilkins for alt countryesque stuff/perving
I also have a weakness for pretty much most of Missy Elliot's stuff.
Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself. |

* every album of souled american (alt-folk/country), altough they rock in some sense
* police - especially the late albums (ghost in the machine, synchronicity)
* songwriters: leonard cohen, suzanne vega
* (early) pet shop boys have some good songs too
* beach boys ? i don't know much, but of course pet sounds.
* yeah, and a lot of folk/country - but isn't good rock intrinsically connected to folk ? both make heavy use of guitars... e.g. neil young - is it rock or country ? whatever...
I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band |

Yes, 3 Feet High and Rising is probably the best, but De La Soul is Dead and Buhloone are rather good too. After that, it tends to get too much like modern gangster rap.

2 many dj - have seen them twice at festivals – the www.electricpicinic.ie festival - I will keep plugging this gig - absolutely brilliant and phenomenal line up last year and year before, if you got to the site, click on enter 2006 site, then click ‘music’ in the 'what’s on' tab, you will find alot of the bands/djs/rappers mentioned in this thread were on line up last year, its a so called ‘boutique’ music festival, in other words, a slightly older crowd, ecleptic mix of artists, nice surroundings, very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, if you are in Britain or Ireland, make the effort and go next year, its been extended to three says! – after seeing them the second time - 2 many djs that is - I thought maybe they were a bit formulaic.. but always a great atmosphere!
Actually the festival i was going on about up there, right click and save target as on this www.electricpicnic.ie/ep05_infosheet.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.electricpicnic.ie/ep05_infosheet.pdf
And you don't get away with Gorillaz!!!!!!!!!!
Carter USM - The love album ruined it for me, post historic monsters was a good album though - underrated I think.

I wish I had more time to write in this thread. So:
techno/house/electro/stuff: Richie Hawtin Maurizio Carl Craig Juan Atkins Moodymann Björk Laurent Garnier Robert Hood Kraftwerk Jeff Mills Transglobal Underground Massive Attack Drexciya UR and oh so many more
hip-hop/whatever: Tricky Public Enemy
jazz: Coltrane Pastorius
this is useless. I'll recommend a couple of essential records tomorrow if I have time.

I only have Preludes, Airs And Yodels, and the live album When In Rome. A friend turned me on to them years ago. A lot of they're music is used in advertisements (and movies too, I think?)-in particular Music For A Found Harmonium, Perpetuum Mobile and Telephone And Rubber Band.

Carl - Your PCO collection isn't lacking. They're all good. I just especially like the 1981 disc (the first I bought), much of which is on the live disc. Wish there were more groups like them, but I guess music doesn't work like that.
edit: I should have said they're all good, except that I couldn't get into their first album "Music From The Penguin Cafe" (1976 - long gap before the next album), other than the wonderful track "Giles Farnaby's Dream". |

I can't believe you said KRS1. Man I listened to BDP quite a bit in the 80s. Puts this song in my head; 1 2 3, the crew is called BDP and if you want to go to the tip top, stop the violence and hip hop, wyyyyooooo! hehehe

not rock: Air, Ladytron, Superheroes, Peaches, electronica does it for me
not rock: Nellie McKay, Norah Jones, Jem, femail singers that sing great (and are hot, not that it matters)
Brian Wilson is rock! SMiLE maybe not, but I would definately call it the best rock album that I know, because I love it so much. ;)
