..as if we'd forget.
25 years ago this Thursday.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/features/20051204-9999-1a04lennon.html
Pixies' leader Frank Black, 40: "I was a fan of his from very early on. I got the 'Plastic Ono Band' record when I was 9. I think I was frightened by it every time I heard it, but ultimately in a good way. There was something on there, something very musically aggressive, that I didn't get. I was asking my cousin what it was all about. And it must have been good because, obviously, I came back to it – and I'm still fascinated by it." |

It's this Thursday? There has been a few mentions of him in the media, recently, but I forgot it was the anniversary of his passing on.

What's his best song as a Beatle? Best solo song?

I'd have to think that over. Imagine is incredible. It's funny, apparently I'm So Tired was the only Beatles song he played when he first toured with The Plastic Ono Band, or something. I'm not sure. I'll have to look that up again!

I just remember my mom crying and not knowing why. She explained that John Lennon was killed and I still didn't get it. Several years later I understood what a tragedy to this world it was. How different would our lives be if he would have lived? |

Imagine was great, but not a Beatle song. John's From Me To You , Don't Let Me Down and I want you (she's so heavy)are a few of the best torn love songs ever written. also I'll Cry Instead,i'm a loser and in my life. The list goes on ..... A romantic at heart !

I love 'In My Life'!
I'm an easy man to please. A simple riff and beautiful verse chorus verse gets me everytime.
Then I hear Ozzy Osbourne's version.
Daisy, I don't remember much about the day. Maybe because I was probably in a supermarket throwing a tantrum on the floor in my terrible twos. I do remember where I was when I heard the news of Kurt Cobain and Jeff Buckley's passing.
Strange Days indeed! Most peculiar, momma. |

www.laibach.org a band with a 20+ year history of music, art and controversy... also because of strong political and social awareness subtones in their work largely misinterpreted by the public (maybe on purpose sometimes) and 'trademark sound' (vocalist) hard to describe them in a few words they've covered the Beatles on album Let it be, other covers include Queen (One Vision), Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil), Europe (Final Countdown)...
Rammstein tried to make it as their rip-off but didn't quite get the idea
...sorry, thread...

"Across The Universe" was definitely ruined for me the day I had to endure the unbearable listening of this song's cover by David Bowie and John Lennon on Bowie's "Young Americans". In the whole Bowie production from 1983 to 1995 there's not a single song that comes close to this atrocious mess of a duet.

I was actually going to say that song, too. "Across the Universe" is so beautiful that it exhalts one from the regular world and into a celestial heaven.
Denis, thanks for the warning. I'll try to avoid that at all costs because if there's one song I don't want to hear ruined, it's Across The Universe. |

If you asked Lennon what his favorite Lennon song was he would say Across The Universe, as he had done in numerous interviews. He was mostly pleased with the lyrics, but I think everything in the song is ear candy. It's hard to say what I think is his best Beatles song. I'd have to separate them, between Lennon/McCartney tunes and strictly Lennon tunes. They're totally different beasts. But I think Girl is towards the top of my list. If it's a strictly Lennon song, it'd have to be off of The Beatles, but it'd be very difficult to tell which one. Maybe Sexy Sadie. I don't know. There's too many. I could argue just about any of them. Damn it. Now I'm going to be up all night thinking about this. Bah!

My memory of the day is eerily similar. I remember holding my mom's hand outside of a supermarket and looking up at her wondering why she was crying. Even though I was only five I remember that day being very quiet and somber.
Never was a Beatles fan however. Except for the song about JoJo and his california grass. |

I've always loved IT'S ONLY LOVE, even though it is easily NOT the best Beatles song...I dunno...something about it just gets me all warm and fuzzy inside.
And BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. KITE is a doozy!
I remember his murder clearly. I had just finished getting ready for school (I was nine) and walked into our family room to find my mom in front of the TV. She was shaking her head and groaning. I immediately recognized the Beatle's televised visage as I had grown up listening to the moptops. I asked what had happened to John and my mom explained a man had shot and killed him. The reporter then mentioned that the other Beatles were mourning in seclusion. Well, as children often take words literally, I instantly had this sad image of Paul, George, and Ringo huddled in a group, together sobbing and hugging.
Happy Xmas, Johnny! And just as the Moon and the Stars and the Sun, you will ALL WAYS Shine On!
I was alone...in my BIG BED

Funnily enough, Jim Morrison was born on this day.
Well, here's to a great, creative songwriter.
