A few peoplw have mentioned these as one of the best bands of the 80's. Unfortunately I have never heard them.
Any suggestions on what album to buy first?

I'm continually increasing my collection, and therefore discovering more and more greatness. Kristin Hersh is an official genius, I have proclaimed it so.

Try The Real Ramona, thats a pretty awesome record, and I like Limbo a lot too.
I'm listening to The Curse right now, a live album from 1992 - tis wicked alright.

I'd go with Cheeseman's suggestions, and then work my way back to earlier work (definitely get "In A Doghouse", which features a reissue of the first album plus demos).

Then, assuming you've liked what you've heard so far, move on to the brilliant self-titled and sadly last album (also known among hipsters as "Sensuous Flaps"), and from there to 50 Foot Wave!

FYI, there's a wonderful Muses B-side on the 4AD 25 years comp, "Cottonmouth", actually the first TM song I remember hearing.

Cottonmouth is a B-side? That's insane, it's such a good song.

By the way, the 4AD album is actually really good: there's a load of good eighties bands on there, topically enough: some Cocteau Twins, The Birthday Party, Dead Can Dance, all sorts of crazy stuff.

i think university is a fantastic place to start with throwing muses. it's the first one i heard....

but honestly, anything apart from hunkpapa will see you in good stead.

and yes, it's criminal that cottonmouth was only a b-side.

unfortunately sensuous flaps didn't interest me too much. was very glad when kristin got back on the ball with 50 foot wave.

the curse is actually the 2nd ever tm record i heard. it's pretty hard listening cause the vocals are soo low.
they did a remix of the version of take from the curse as a b-side on one of limbo's single which sounded a shitload better cause you could hear kristin.

The whole thing's quiet really. But, still some fairly decent versions on there - I've used Two Step off the The Curse to prove my point that actually yes, it is an amazing song (no arguing at the back). Nice version of Delicate Cutters as well (haven't heard a bad one...)

the ones with great guitar riffs sound amazing on the curse.
like bea, hate my way and furious.
they just sound different with such low vocals.
have you heard the version of mania recorded at the town and country club in '88 (actually when the pixies opened for them, and the show that has been released)? it is absolutely killer. i heard it before the album version which is just ass in comparison.
if you haven't, i'll upload it to yousendit - it was released as a b-side....you need to hear it.

I have not, you may do so. Thank you kindly!

Kristin did Mania at the Scala the other day, just acoustic. Pretty ace.

I'm still hoping for a lossless version of the '88 Town & Country Club show... I won't even mention video :(

It would be cool if those Scala gigs had been taped too...

They were being filmed, there were several cameras around, therefore I'd imagine there was an audio feed as well. Maybe it'll be an official thing, you never know. Like a 4AD birthday thingy.

Oh, there's been talk of an official release for ages, you know. I think 4ad has the footage, there were snippets on the 4ad minisite when Sensuous Flaps came out...

A TM DVD has been in the works forever, too, but the '88 gig wasn't supposed to be included.

but i'm not holding my breath for any form of official release...

would be nice, but doesn't seem likely...

I'm surprised nobody mentioned "Sunny Border Blue", Kristin's 2001 solo effort - it's a pure masterpiece, even better than "Limbo" in my opinion.

Jop mentioned it there, but then, y'know, the thread's about Throwing Muses...

Its my most recently purchased, so I'm still getting into it. Spain is a great song, and I like Trouble a lot too.

Isn't The Grotto Kristin's last solo album? That's my favourite I think. Generally I prefer her solo stuff to The Throwing Muses.

I only realised a few weeks ago that Trouble is a Cat Stevens song.

Ditto.

I am a little bummed to not see House Tornado mentioned more than ...twice?

Great album. "Colder," "Mexican Women," and "Walking In The Dark" are all lovely.

I'm not a musisian, so I don't feel well qualified to judge the talent of musicians, but I love the bass on House Tornado. There's one song near the middle of the CD (i'm terrible at remembering titles) where Leslie Langston is just wonderful on the bass. She just walks that bass around. So perfect. Does she have a reputation as a great bass player? Where is she?

I bet you're thinking of 'Run Letter'.
David Narciso is always stunning in every TM album, but Leslie Langston actually stands out more in the rythmic section of 'House Tornado' than David.
Didn't Leslie get a "real" job or something?

The bass is always great on Throwing Muses records, regardless of the bassist, it's quite remarkable. Bernard Georges in particular - his playing in 50 Foot wave is just amazing, just wonderful.

I googling to find an answer and there was some bits saying she quit the band to marry the guy that did their lighting. There was also a dead link that seemed like it might have solo work done by her.

I also learned she grew up with Kristin and Tanya in Rhode Island.

I've noticed that every time that I've been driving with someone (I usually have mixes of all different songs and artist on CDs that I play in my car) whenever the Muses's "Surf Cowboy" is playing people always ask "Who is this?" There's something about that song.

One of the 4AD sites has been saying for years that a Muses B-sides album is coming. That would be great.

If anyone is looking to try Throwing Muses they should start with an EP.
"Bright Yellow Gun" has three perfect songs.
"Counting Backwards" has a long, electric guitar version of "Amazing Grace".
"Not Too Soon" has a cover of "Cry Baby Cry" and a longer remix of "Him Dancing".
And "Shark" has a re-recording of that song that is much better than the album version, plus variations of three other "Limbo" songs, including "Limbobo" , a longer version with a cool drum-machine intro.

I've seen a few TM shows (including a 2003 show w/ Tanya). "Mania" is incredible live. I wish there was an official release with good sound quality ( I'd also like to see Madonna release a recording of "Like A Virgin" from the Blond Ambition tour- I always hated that song until she did that version.) . 50" Wave should cover it ("Mania") for a B-side. The "Take" Live Re-mix is so clear it sounds like it was done in a studio.

One more thing, I'd really like to get "In a Doghouse" but it sucks that it has only "Chains Changed" but not "The Fat Skier" too.
