Since 1997 there has been enough published on this subject to fill every posting on this site many times over. Every noteworthy Virologist on the planet says a Pandemic is either possible or probable, but I guess if the oil company scientist and the Tobacco lobby scientist don't see any "actual scientific proof" on those issues then it makes sense that you would not see any validity to the Pandemic threat...and of course, if you are wrong and people listen to you, you will???

In a few days several hundred people have viewed the information I put out...even though the subject was clear and they understood what I would be posting...that is the point :-)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Scientists in Hong Kong say they may have helped explain why the H5N1 bird flu virus kills so many healthy young adults -- it apparently causes a "storm" of immune system chemicals that overwhelms the patient.

The H5N1 virus caused proteins known as cytokines to rush to infected lung tissue -- evidence of a so-called cytokine storm, an immune system overreaction that can be fatal.

The study, published in the online medical journal Respiratory Research, might suggest that if H5N1 does cause a pandemic, it could disproportionately affect the young and healthy as compared with seasonal flu, which kills many elderly people but few young adults.

It also raises questions about how effective drugs will be in controlling such a pandemic, experts said.

"We have to see if it is true and if we can do anything about it," cautioned Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who was not involved in the research.

But if the experiment does accurately show what happens in people, it may mean patients with H5N1 infections will need drugs that depress the immune response in addition to antivirals, Fauci said.

The H5N1 flu has swept through flocks of poultry but has so far infected only 124 people in four countries and killed 64 since it re-emerged in 2003.

It does not easily infect people, but when it does, it kills about half of them.

"The reasons for this unusual severity of human disease have remained unclear," Michael Chan and Malik Peiris of the University of Hong Kong and colleagues wrote in their report.

They took samples of H5N1 from a patient who died of the infection in a 1997 outbreak, from two patients infected in Vietnam in 2004, and a sample of a Hong Kong patient with ordinary H1N1 seasonal flu.

They used the virus to infect lung tissue samples taken from other, non-flu patients.
Chemical reaction

The H5N1 viruses brought in a storm of cytokines -- the immune system's inflammatory chemicals -- including IP-10, interferon beta, RANTES and interleukin-6. The H1N1 virus caused a much smaller effect.

And the later, Vietnamese strains caused a bigger cascade than the 1997 H5N1 strain.

This could be because of continued mutations, the researchers said. "The H5N1 viruses have continued to reassort, acquiring different internal genes from other influenza viruses of avian origin," the researchers wrote.

The study, published on the Internet at http://respiratory-research.com/, may explain the severe respiratory distress suffered by H5N1 patients, who often say they struggle to breathe.

Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota who has been advising the U.S. government on the risks of a flu pandemic, said the study supports predictions that any possible H5N1 pandemic would be especially severe.

It means being young and healthy could actually work against people who become infected.

"Anyone could experience this very severe, life-threatening illness," Osterholm said in a telephone interview.

"This is looking more and more like an H1N1 1918."

The worst recorded influenza epidemic was in 1918, when an H1N1 strain swept the globe in a few months, killing anywhere between 20 million and 100 million people, depending on the estimate. In comparison, a pandemic in 1957 killed 2 million and one caused by an H3N2 virus in 1968 killed 1 million.

"In 1918, even among the very young and the very old, there was a ten-fold increase in deaths," Osterholm said. "There was a 1,000-fold increase in young adults."

Fauci said researchers are now testing various drugs that may affect the immune system to see if they would help patients better survive H5N1.

Proinflammatory cytokine responses induced by influenza A (H5N1) viruses in primary human alveolar and bronchial epithelial cells

Published 11 November 2005

Abstract (provisional)

Background

Fatal human respiratory disease associated with influenza A subtype H5N1 has been documented in Hong Kong, and more recently in Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. We previously demonstrated that patients with H5N1 disease had unusually high serum levels of IP-10 (interferon-gamma-inducible protein-10). Furthermore, when compared with human influenza virus subtype H1N1, the H5N1 viruses in 1997 (A/Hong Kong/483/97) (H5N1/97) were more potent inducers of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g. tumor necrosis factor-alpha) and chemokines (e.g. IP-10) from primary human macrophages in vitro, which suggests that cytokines dysregulation may play a role in pathogenesis of H5N1 disease. Since respiratory epithelial cells are the primary target cell for replication of influenza viruses, it is pertinent to investigate the cytokine induction profile of H5N1 viruses in these cells.

Methods

We used quantitative RT-PCR and ELISA to compare the profile of cytokine and chemokine gene expression induced by H5N1 viruses A/HK/483/97 (H5N1/97), A/Vietnam/1194/04 and A/Vietnam/3046/04 (both H5N1/04) with that of human H1N1 virus in human primary alveolar and bronchial epithelial cells in vitro.

Results

We demonstrated that in comparison to human H1N1 viruses, H5N1/97 and H5N1/04 viruses were more potent inducers of IP-10, interferon beta, RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in primary human alveolar and bronchial epithelial cells in vitro. Recent H5N1 viruses from Vietnam (H5N1/04) appeared to be even more potent at inducing IP-10 than H5N1/97 virus.

Conclusion

The H5N1/97 and H5N1/04 subtype influenza A viruses are more potent inducers of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in primary human respiratory epithelial cells than subtype H1N1 virus. We suggest that this hyper-induction of cytokines may be relevant to the pathogenesis of human H5N1 disease.

This is the funniest thread i never read. Frank Lee if your not joking u deserve to be locked up. I'd rather get the flu and die rather than read your diatripe.
Your first post says it all "that could breed more effectively in mammals", it is still more likely that you'll die in a car crash.

Every month "scientists increasing believe" something new. Its a way of getting funding and proving that the research for your Phd and the 3-4 years spent doing it was not a complete waste.

Grow up.

Actually sounds like George Bush rhetoric, soon the US will have to invade Iran because the "Intelligence" will show that the Iranians are supporting the bird's in their evil flu plot.
Lets have a "War on Bird terrorism". Birds are central to the "axis of evil".

I think "Frank Lee" is probably joking. Either that, or he has severe mental deficiencies. Or maybe he's a chicken who somehow gained the capability of posting to the Internet.

If you subtract the children who piss and moan because someone dared post something that they thought was not important, from the total number of people who looked at this posting...go ahead and take your shoes off and count your toes if it helps... you will see that a lot of people saw the title of the posting and were just plain interested.

We have a lot of people in our community like you, that's why we are where we are.

The last really crazy thing that happened concerning a catastrophe was some old guy building a boat a thousand miles from dry land...and we know how that turned out.

If I'm crazy, its because I give a flip about someone like you. I hope me and all of the rest of the biologists, virologists and other people who are running around trying to make sure this thing doesn’t turn into a big fat mess are wrong and this turns out to be just an opportunity to spend some time with some very interesting characters. Let’s have this conversation about what is crazy and what is not again…say, by next Feb.

Not sure what her Master Of Science signature means. Typically an education degree, but I know how people like to make things up in life, as they go along, so what does it mean?

This posting is on other Sites, not by me, but by others. In fact this is quite a hot topic everywhere except in our community. This morning, in a certain city in Texas, I signed on for my company to do over $300,000 in business for school modifications to existing technology infrastructure that will enable children to attend class via WEB sessions, because their community was concerned that a Pandemic might close the schools and bring the education system in that city to a grinding halt.

The government has a whole list of things mandated, that have to be done to comply with this Pandemic Preparedness Plan HHS is implementing. But instead of trying to make sure some of that gets done in our community and maybe we even get to do some of the work...

We make jokes and post pretty chicken pictures. Now, when this thing comes down on us...whenever that is, I'll be looking for the folks who took time to post of of this crap, to see ahat they have to say then.

In the mean time, there is a client of mine, who has a need for 10 Project managers (IT projects), with PMI PMP certification if possible and 10 Business Analyst ASAP. If you send an email to me, I will send you the request information an forward your name to the recruiter.

Just some of the sill shit that this Pandemic "crap" is generating. WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE

How do you know how many people have looked at this thread. There's something like 600 views, but that could be 20 people.

Clarification: I don't doubt that avian flu has the potential to kill many people. But, I don't think abusing the conventions of this forum and pushing your warnings without any claims of what your credentials are is a productive approach. Why would we take you seriously?

Are you a Frank Black fan then? Else why else did you choose this site? And why kick up a stink when it was suggested that you should've posted in the general chat section? Surely you would have got more responses and publicity for your concerns in the appropriate part of the forum.

(Hint: Master of Science means just that, she'd kick your shins in for suggesting you made it up)
