Rebels, Pixies on a roll in soccer

Dec 07 2005

Paul Min blasted in three goals to guide the Coquitlam City Rebels to a 7-0 pasting of the Abbotsford Hurricane in a recent boys Under-16 Conference Cup youth soccer contest at Charles Best field.
Glenn Thomas added a pair of markers for the Silver-division Rebels, who got singles from Chris Esposito, Tedd Carr and Damian Sexton. Strong defensive play for the Rebels was turned in by Shinsuke Swope, Tony Odorisio and Max Digiandomenico.
Daniel Clark was solid in net, leading the Rebels to their fifth shutout of the season. The Rebels also boast the lowest goals against average (five) in their division.
Nadina Gill pumped in a pair of goals as the Coquitlam City Pixies licked the host Langley Cobras 6-0 in girls U-16 Silver 'B' action.
Sam Petrin, Diane Kiss and Kayla Wilson also struck net for the Pixies, whose other tally was an own goal.

"In "Pixie Chicks, Treva Widness, Emma Scott and Gracie Brandt-Erichsen couldn't have been more charming as they flashed back to a time when woodland creatures ruled the world. Adorned with netting, vines, leaves, flowers and berries, the young pixies represented spring, fall and winter with the assistance of artists Ann Widness and Beth Brandt-Erichsen."

..Oh yeah, and mention of the real Pixies here:

http://www.digitallyobsessed.com/showreview.php3?ID=8347

"If the Pixies can reunite after all of these years and a ton of turmoil, why the heck can't an arguably better, more revolutionary band like The Sugarcubes do the same? I was ecstatic to finally witness the Pixies in concert a couple of years ago, but before they came on stage, I couldn't help thinking that a reunion of Björk and her Icelandic comrades would be even more exhilarating."

...and here:

http://www.laweekly.com/index.php?option=com_lawcontent&task=view&id=12607&Itemid=9

"Not to mention a little college band called the Pixies. And yes, I would like to be the first person to state in print that I feel Art Brut owes something subtle but crucial to the Pixies."

"Clear Channel claims that its patent creates a monopoly on all-in-one technologies that produce post-concert live recordings on digital media and has threatened to sue anyone who makes such recordings with a different system. This has forced bands like the Pixies into using Clear Channel's proprietary technology, and it hurts investment and innovation in new systems developed by other companies."

"After five weeks and twenty-five bands, the final five acts of the 30 greatest American rock bands of all time are about to be revealed. The previous part (Part V: Numbers 10-6) saw the likes of The Pixies, R.E.M., The Grateful Dead, Parliament/Funkadelic and the Velvet Underground."

http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060228/BREAKING/302280004

The Coachella festival has grown into what many critics call the most important alternative festival in the world and a recently released documentary film made over several years shows moments of music history made there, including the reunion of The Pixies.

http://blogcritics.org/archives/2006/03/01/122050.php

"And Gil Norton — whose work with the Pixies is legendary — preps the album for similar space travel with his unique sonic shine."

"In a band that rocks hard, Chantal coos like Kim Deal & howls like Joan Jett in the same breath."

http://news.scotsman.com/features.cfm?id=320702006

"Astounding sets at T in the Park and at their high-profile support slot with seminal US alt rockers The Pixies at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh last summer set things up nicely for the release of the band's debut album, Wolves (in the shops Monday), and while it is unlikely to make them millionaires, it does signal the arrival of an important new Scottish band."

"After playing just a handful of gigs around Scotland, the band secured a slot at Manchester's In The City music convention last year and they have not looked back since - the support slot with The Pixies at Meadowbank Stadium last August being an obvious hig.

"That gig was an amazing eye-opener for us," smiles Deveney. "It made us realise what it must be like being in a band like The Pixies and it gave us the chance to play to an audience we wouldn't normally get to play in front of."

"Meeting The Pixies would have been the icing on the cake for My Latest Novel, but the Boston band kept themselves to themselves.

"In the backstage area ourselves, Idlewild and Teenage Fanclub were all kept together and just hung out, whereas The Pixies were in a different bit on their own.

"It would have been nice to meet them but, you know, that's fair enough them wanting to do that - they are The Pixies after all.""

http://news.scotsman.com/features.cfm?id=332212006

"The band, consisting of Chris Deveney (vocals, guitar, bass), his brother Gary (vocals, guitar), Paul McGeachy (vocals, guitar, xylophone), Laura McFarlane (vocals, violin, piano) and Ryan King (drums, percussion), have risen rapidly from playing bars in nearby Gourock in front of a handful of punters to performing at T in the Park and playing to 10,000 people at Meadowbank Stadium, supporting the Pixies."

Here's some other things 'The Pixies' have been up to lately. Including ice skating.

"So I stayed with the little pixies and tried to appreciate their athleticism and art."

"Just as prominent are the lucky horseshoes and the jewelled pixies, the Aztec amulets and the masonic badges. The modern world has replaced true religious feeling, which springs from within, with the frantic acquisition of trinkets, charms, pendants, gewgaws, pixies and junk."

"Unlike half the Olympic-obsessed universe, I will ignore the cute sequined pixies and sultry silken vixens this evening as they leap, skate, kiss and cry their way through Palavela arena, and I am advising you to do the same."

"Sam Petrin knocked in two goals to guide the Coquitlam City Pixies to a 4-0 victory over the Port Coquitlam Lions in a girls U-16 Silver ‘B’ battle. Jocleyn Lougheed and Ashley MacDonald also tallied for the Pixies, while sweeper Ramneet Gill had a strong outing for the winners."

FRANK BLACK | New Solo (And Pixies) Album

"Yeah [we're recording a new album], but I need to write some good songs. These Pixies have gotten a little uppity. They're like, ''What if it's not as good as the old records?"
-Frank Black to the Boston Globe

So the possibility of new Pixies album seems more and more likely, but for now we'll have to settle with some more solo Frank Black. Last year, Senor Charles Thompson released his most inspired solo record, Honeycomb, which was recorded with legendary session-men Steve Cropper and Spooner Oldman, as well as Wilson Pickett's producer Jon Tiven.

He got the same team together to record a follow-up record called Fastman Raiderman: Honeycomb 2, which should be released in this spring. Charles though wouldn't be happy releasing only one record this year, so he's now in Los Angeles working on a new album with his more rock oriented band, The Catholics.

As for that new Pixies album. I'm not holding my breathe....

This line raised the biggest laugh.

he's now in Los Angeles working on a new album with his more rock oriented band, The Catholics

Best fiction ever.

What do ya mean, he’s dead? If you don’t have any- can you make one up?
God don’t start. We saw him crowd surfing at the Pixies concert a few summers ago in the Phoenix Park. What ELSE would he be doing at a Pixies concert considering he is such a fan/friend of Frank Black. "Skrymir is comprised of Wabash College Profs. Stephen Morillo, Dan Rogers and Patrick Myers, software engineer James MacDougall and Joe Laskowski. "To help focus their energies on their first studio release for ATO, the band decided to try a wholly new tack, and enlist their first outside producer. When Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters) was named as a candidate, Gray leapt at the suggestion. "I've been a crazy, huge Pixies fan my entire life, since I was thirteen," he gushes. Others required more convincing. "Back when Tom was listening to the Pixies, I was heavy into Slayer," confesses Ball. Fortunately, they soon found a common point of interest: A shared passion for Liverpool's Everton football club."

Little Glen Hansrad interview here, in which he mention FB:

http://www.galwayindependent.com/entertainment/7208.html

"Do you think it's cathartic to express the dark stuff?

I was lucky enough to meet Frank Black (ex-Pixies frontman). There's a man who screams his head off on stage and yet he's the mellowest guy. Maybe it's because once the emotion is expressed, you don't have to carry it. "

"Accurately described as the illegitimate red-headed stepchild of the Pixies' Frank Black and former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus, Tapes 'N Tapes will kick off its first U.K. tour May 18 in London."

"Elsewhere there's a rocking edge to Oral Fixation -- no doubt due to the guitar playing of Lyle Workman, more widely known for his work with Sheryl Crowe and former Pixies frontman Frank Black."

http://www.moregoatthangoose.com/cds/cds.php?cd=00328.xml

"The band's press sheet claims that the Reputation's self-titled release is the album the Breeders were trying to make but never achieved. I am sure Kim Deal (the Pixies) and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses) would be astonished to hear of such a bold statement since the Reputation come no where close to the likes of the Breeders."

"If female-fronted rock and roll is what you are craving try some Bikini Kill, L7, the Gossip, or what the heck how about the Breeders instead."

"Pixies, "Dead"

Slug: When I discovered rock—because, you know, I discovered it—the Pixies were one of the first five bands that I picked up on. I was living with a girl who was listening to shit like Pixies and Bettie Serveert. I got into the Pixies because of "Monkey Gone To Heaven," and I started listening to the whole record and even went out and bought some more of their records. I wound up being a fan of Frank Black, and I even liked The Breeders for a minute. "Dead" is not my favorite song on the album. I do like the way the vocals are recorded, which I think more rockers should have done during the grunge era, as far as using cool, strange, fucked-up vocal effects."

""Maybe it's helped that we're influenced by American sounding bands like Sonic Youth, Nirvana and The Pixies. But we're pleased how things have gone there and we're looking forward to going back.""

http://www.tinymixtapes.com/articles/2006.05.09-dont_hate_me_for_liking_u2.htm

"Now in the '90s, things are starting to take a different turn. There's an underbelly of acts that have been gaining popularity in the college circuit -- R.E.M., the Pixies, Sonic Youth. In Britain, Pixies, in particular, are turning a lot of heads and getting people excited about the creative process again. Not only that, but they are writing about some serious subjects without seeming put-off-ish. U2, being the wise market readers that they have become, realize that the tide is turning. Or, at least, half of the band sees this potential change."

http://www.lacitybeat.com/article.php?id=3739&IssueNum=153

"1989

The Pixies, live in Hollywood, in hottest July. The Palace, murky with smoke and steaming baby busters. Our tribe. The sound sucks. I can’t see shit. We press forward, forward – until both band and music are more distinct. And the non-hits keep on coming: “Debaser”! “Gigantic”! “Gouge Away”! Holiest of holies, “Levitate Me.” Everyone pogos and go-gos. Beer spills. Sweat pours. And our generation – overshadowed by the previous one, crowded out by the next, owning so little – is carried away, on a Wave of Mutilation. Together."

http://www.csindy.com/csindy/2006-05-11/sixtyseconds.html

"Indy: Gil Norton, who's known for his work with the Pixies and Foo Fighters, produced your new album. How did he help you achieve your goals for the CD?

Blackburn: He's very good at [simplifying songs] and saying, "That's what you need for the song." We learned that very quickly: Streamline the part. Make it as melodic as it needs to be or whatever, or make it less complex for this section, and let all the melodies come through. The song has to be audible. And at the right time, go to town [instrumentally] and do whatever you want."

http://onmilwaukee.com/family/articles/fairytopia.html?8672

"The show features 12 original songs, along with an extraordinarily colorful and elaborate set complete with flying pixies and aerial acrobats."

Shouldn't they be playing the songs rather than flying around?!

http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/63205.html

"For the first time, the band brought in an outside producer, Gil Norton, the man behind Pixies albums Doolittle and Bossanova. Gray admits that, previously, Gomez could spend "eight months noodling" before entering the studio. Norton brought urgency to the proceedings. "Our heads had been all over the place, so bringing someone else in to do the disciplining was key," he says. "I was a huge Pixies fan and those succinct, perfect pieces of twisted pop stuck with me. Gil said, 'You've done your weird records. You can do them again if you like, but this is the kind of Gomez record I want to hear.' We had to fall in line. There were difficulties but we pulled through and I think once we got there it was a refreshing experience.""

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1796419,00.html

"For reasons too complicated to explain, but loosely involving my rudimentary knowledge of the Pixies' basslines, I am placed in the advanced bass class."

http://music.monstersandcritics.com/news/article_1172903.php/This_Day_in_Music_for_June_15_2006

"2004 - The Pixies releases its first new song in 13 years. 'Bam Thwok' is available beginning at midnight for digital download exclusively via Apple`s iTunes Music Store."

http://www.dublinks.com/index.cfm/loc/16/pt/0/spid/FB5A0C41-D7DD-18DF-AEB65B9FE0B36EF4.htm

"The Bad Plus infused their heady brew of jazz improvisation into songs by The Pixies, Blondie and The Aphex Twin and returns the compliment by giving their jazz compositions a big, shiny rock sound."

"For their next aural outing Give, The Bad Plus created the same sprinkling of original compositions and daring interpretations with the boys tackling Black Sabbath's "Iron Man", The Pixies' "Velouria" and Ornette Coleman's "Street Man"."
