I'm one of the unlucky ones who never saw the Catholics so this was my first time seeing Rich play. Rich is playing pedal steel with Caitlin Cary & Thad Cockrell. Thad made a few jokes about how the fans' heads were spinning around like in The Exocist because the band opening for Eric Johnson was playing country music, but it was clear that there were a lot of people that appreciated the music and Rich playing pedal steel.
I got in trouble once for taking pics during the show from some jackass bouncer. He's pulling on my arm during the picture where I cut Rich's head off. After that he came up to me to tell me it wasn't his rule, the band requested it. I lied and told him that I knew Rich and he asked me to take pictures for him. He came back 20 minutes later and told me I could take pictures, but none of Eric Johnson.
1995 at a Bob Dylan show was the last time I heard two Dylan songs in the same night. Tonight Eric Johnson opened with "My Back Pages," but Rich, Caitlin, Thad, and co. rocked "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You."
I couldn't get through the night without yelling to Rich that I wanted to hear "Western Star." He smiled, laughed, and said that he'd love to play it.
I look forward to the next time I see Rich play, and I dream of the day I see him with Frank Black and the rest of the Catholics.

Amazing pics, scruvs! Loving his shirt. How cool would it have been if he dropped a few barres of Western Star, just for you? I'm so happy he's been working with the Man, again.
I think it's time for me to check out more of Rich's work away from the Catholics. Thanks for posting these.
It's always nice to know what the others are up to even though they've flown the nest. |

Hey Scruvs, Great Pictures.
Damn, Rich has great hair, I think this is the perfect length for it too.
He sure can play his Sho-Bud pedal steel guitar, huh.
Here's a quote from Rich to some questions from me concerning his Sho-Bud when he hosted a chat session here at fb.net: RichG- catholic -33 Posts, Posted - 04/24/2005 : 12:42:41
"I got the Sho Bud in Canada after all of the Catholics stuff was ripped off in Philadelphia. I got the seat at the same time, you need to have a pack a seat if you play pedal steel, it's just the way it is. Otherwise you're not a pedal steel player. The Sho Bud is from the mid 70's, a great era for Sho Buds, they look and work and sound great."

I know as much about playing guitar as most 1st graders. Rich was quietly messing around a little bit while Thad and Caitlin were chatting on the mics. Someone asked Rich if he could play Looney Tunes. Rich replied that it wasn't tuned for that. That guy asked how it was tuned and Rich said, "E9."
Whatever the hell that means. Maybe I'll google it one day.

Here you go, scruvs. Whenever you feel like reading something:
quote: http://www.win.net/mainstring/tunings.html
An open tuning is simply one that gives the sound of a chord, either major or minor, when the guitar is strummed without being fretted. The tuning is often named by this chord. For instance, if the guitar sounds a G major chord when strummed, the tuning will be named open G. If the chord is a D minor, then the tuning will probably be called open D minor, or simply D minor. The beauty of this is that a person can learn to play songs on the guitar easily by using one finger [or slide] to barre across the fretboard... These tunings are also popular for slide or bottleneck style playing.
Continuing to the next step beyond major and minor are variant open chord tunings such as C6, G7, etc., which again describe an open chord sound. These variations have been popular with both fingerpicking and slide players. 6th and 9th tunings are popular in the world of pedal steel guitar.
Alternative tunings let you slide between chord forms that would normally be impossible to play.
Rich's E9 gives him easier access (and most efficient, maybe) to the chords and notes he needs for the band's songs and his solos/riffs/licks, whatever you want to call them.
I think he either doesn't know how to play 'Looney Tunes' when pedal steel tuned to E9. Or he does know how to play Looney Tunes irrespective of tuning but didn't want to steal the show. |

Damn Guitar Man, well done.
Thanks for the succinct definition and your explanation of why Rich tunes his pedal steel to E9 when he's playing with Caitlin and Thad.
Of course, when The Duke of Fender plays either his Sho-Bud pedal steel or his 1957 Fender pedal steel with Joshua Black Wilkins he always tunes them to HCB (Hard Country Blues), huh.
I bet you're right about Duke not wanting to steal the show. He's got a lot of class.

I haven't heard of this before. You have to ask Rich.G how it's played next time you see him.

As you know fbc, Hard Country Blues is a term coined to describe Joshua Black Wilkins' combination of songwriting, vocals, and heart.
It was also an attempt at some humor. You know, country songs in the key of G, but JBW's songs in the key of HCB. Anyway, it was an attempt, huh.
As for you query, he certainly can't forget to think about his knees, huh.

I never expect anything but humour (you forgot the 'u') from yo (oops! so did I), Oldman. Think you coined yourself a new tunage here. Another defining moment in the history of fb.net.
HCB = Standard tuning with a little more "huh!" |

I dig your research and references fbc, you nailed it, right on point, huh.

So, what can I say? There's two things I hate being late to - movies and shows. I was flying solo, but still I was late to the show because I was looking for parking for over 30 minutes. I think they were on their 1st or 2nd song. I think they were playing "Two Different Things." I ran to the bar for a beer and to the front of the stage in front of Rich before missing too much more.
I didn't know much of Caitlin and Thad's music before the show. They sing pretty country love song duets. I dig it. They played several songs from BEGONIAS (which I'm much more familiar with now after the show).
The crowd was pretty mellow, but the place was pretty packed for a Sunday night. Alot of the background chatter seemed to focus around guitars, especially during Eric Johnson's set. People talking tech about guitars, pedals, and other setup stuff. That's why I said I think alot of people really appreciated watching Rich play. People would get loud for Rich after most of his solos. It's great too, because Rich will acknowledge the crowd when they're cheering for him by raising up his hand or yelling back to the crowd. He seems to get as excited about it as his fans.
I liked "Party Time" alot too. Rich has a nice little intro into the song. Like I said, "Tonight I'll be Staying Here With You" was my favorite though. Which really surprised me, because, in general, I'm picky about covers. That song is a great steel guitar Dylan tune and Rich rocked it. You know, it really got my head bobbin', my body jumpin', and my boots stompin'. Plus, how could I not like it, after all I was wearing my Dylan Tshirt that night (which doesn't come close to your Pistolero shirt).

Yeah, Rich is such a quality addition to any band. I'm glad to hear he was apprecitated by the guitar aficionados in the house that night. His Sho-Bud with its vintage pack-a-seat are really special.
I missed Caitlin and Thad when they played the Opry Plaza at the end of July this summer and just caught the end of their set at the Americana Music Convention.
I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I haven't bought BEGONIAS yet, but I will soon.
Sounds like you had a good time. I enjoy going out by myself to see bands that I really want to see if no one else can go. In fact some of my best nights of honky-tonkin have been with just me, myself and I. It is nice to have someone watching your back though, whether it be for jackass bouncers or other knuckleheads.

Nice pics, I did'nt see where you cut Rich's head off (if you mean the 5th pic, it's only the very top of his head). Since you mention Dylan, I have soem pics of him in Kilkenny a few years ago (a couple with Ron Wood), but they're a bit crappy.
I sure would love to be able to play a pedal steel. What heart-wrenchingly beautiful notes it can sing!!

So many bright pictures. That explains why he was squinting and missed more & more notes as the night progressed: he was blinded by the flash. :) |

Welcome Back Home Duke!
I'm excited to say that Rich has finished touring for the moment and is back home in Guitar Town.
JBW gathered up the boys (The Duke, Steve Latanation and Scott McEwen) and put on one helluva show last night at one of the local listening rooms (The Basement).
Rich told Joshua that he couldn't wait to strap on his Tele after being confined (my word, not his, of course I'm paraphrasing here a little, Rich did say he thought he may be a little rusty with his Tele, but there were no signs of rust to be seen last night, he hit the ground running and didn't stop until the closing song, In My Time of Dying,) to his pack-a-seat and Sho-Bud for the last few months with Caitlin Carey and Thad Cockrell.
Rich really stretched out last night on his Fender Telecaster, showing a nice sampling of his signature playing style. He gave his Tele a good workout and at times Rich got a little animated on stage, especially during SuckerPunch, Waterside, and their closing number, IN MY TIME OF DYING.
He played slide on his Telecaster with his "Falls City" beer can and his slide from his Sho-Bud on his Telecaster, fuckin awesome, attention grabbing, in the presence of a legend, guitar playing.
I should have some pictures to post as soon as the photographer sends them to me.
Damn its good to have the Boys Back in Town!
