If Barry thinks that's his last post ever, I'm bringing my shiny watch on a chain and a portable reverb kit and he'll never think such things again. No, I couldn't get to the Breeders' gig, but thanks anyway K, it's good to be over here, got to enjoy it while I can.
There's word of Franz in London on the weekend and since I missed them, if any Londoners have a tip on some available tickets (I'd arguably need two, hopefully three so whoever has one can come if they'd like) that would be fantastic and much appreciated. I wasn't able to get to their show in Dublin here the past Friday and this would be some sort of cosmic balance thing.
As for Manchester, well, the delay is extended yet again, but I'll be there Saturday if I have to, well, do something drastic. I think Liverpool's off the todo list now... and I sadly won't be making it anywhere else in Ireland such as Galway or Cork.
Finally, the cold. It is chilly. Last I heard (i.e. two days ago) it was 17 above back home. And dry. This 5 degrees with blistering wind and bone-chilling humidity is far worse than 17 below methinks. Well, maybe on par. In either case, I'd be fine for the so called Gulf Stream to do its job again, but I guess the winds have to change first.

Well I just left Dean at the station about 3 hours ago, and I have to admit I was a little sad. He's a top guy, and we had a good time this weekend (I think - we did, didn't we Dean?). I am not sure Manchester will really hold up against some of the other amazing places he's been, but at least he can say he's been here.

Definitely had a great time in Manchester, Michael! Never in my life have I been quite so 'enthused' quite so early in the day. And the club, well, that was magical. Give my regards to Liza and of course to your esteemed roommate as well.
In seriousness, I did quite enjoy myself and may even be developing a taste for 'football' on the telly, if you must call it that. Thanks for takin' care of me and I hope that you get some much needed rest. York is nice so far, it was funny, 5 mins out of Manchester and it was snowing like back home with trees and ground covered. Very pretty. Unfortunately, the main landmark (whose name is somehow eluding me) is closed because some new Archduke is being inaugurated and BBC et al are setting up. But I'm off to explore some more...
For those interested, it's looking like I'll be heading down to Oxford tomorrow, then maybe Winchester or Stonehenge or somewhere like that the next day, and then to London for my final weekend here. So...
LONDONERS. If you're interested in a meetup, please email me as I'm keen to meet as many of you as possible whilst in your fair land. And, of course, if you have a line on Franz Ferdinand tickets. I REALLY need two. Anyone?
Finally, sadly, Barry is immune to hypnosis and so we lose him and by the same token Ten Percenter to much less frequent visits and work crackdowns.

I should be in London Thursday, though because I'm realizing more and more how little time I have, MAYBE Friday. No later, certainly. I have a friend (whoa!, I know) from Australia that I toured through Scandinavia with and am meeting up with this weekend too. And I'd like to do another musical and as I've stated, see Franz. I've found tickets but they're pricey. Quite pricey. Might do it anyway as a splurge sort of a thing...

Botanical Gardens - http://www.botanic-garden.ox.ac.uk/Garden/gardenintro.html very pretty if you like flowers but is quite a large part of the oxford experience as are..
University Colleges - You'll never get in to see all of them because of stupid entry times and all sorts of restrictions not to mention how they are spread throughout the city (and to be honest once you've seen one...) I had a friend at Lincoln college one of the smaller ones and that was quite pleasant, I think the most popular for visitors is Christ Church though - http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/modules/standard/viewpage.asp?id=274 - it's certainly the most striking and has it's own gallery too - http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/modules/standard/viewpage.asp?id=435 - one of the other ones that I think is nicest is Magdalen (Maudlin - stupid pronounciation) http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/college_life/chapel.shtml and it's also convenient for a rather nice riverside walk that leads you to where they hire out the punts and a fabulous pub with a nice beer garden on the river who do the best traditional food.
The Ashmoleum museum - affiliated with the university it's a mightily impressive place http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/ and also convenient for the best ice-cream shop in the whole of oxford, it's all about the icecream.
The eagle and child pub is also nearby to the museum, famous for being the meeting place of literary greats such as CS Lewis and Tolkein, and they serve up an ok pint as well. Pretty much next door is the Lamb and Flag where it is claimed Hardy wrote most of Jude the Obscure (I don't think I ever went there myself though)
I'd also go to the original Oxfam (I got some great books from there) and avoid the Oxford experience shop (unless you really want an Oxford T shirt) also just up the road from there is Blackwells Bookshop which is amazing, they have a darling coffee shop in the middle and the whole place just oozes knowledge. Again (back to the city centre pubs..) if you carry on up past the blackwells you arrive at the Turf Tavern - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/406/ - this is where a lot of the students go drinking, I went there a few times for the pimms and lemonade when the rowing was on, it's got lots of little coridoors and hidey holes and it's pretty friendly.
going out
plenty of options, for low down indie joy there is the cowley road. Just over Magdelen bridge is a venue called the point, there are two roads that diverge form the point, one leads to headington (more on that later) the other leads to the Cowley road. The point is a brilliant venue for the smaller bands and I spent a lot of time there. Further down the way there is an art house cinema (where I saw clockwork orange for the first time) and a few strange pubs, the hob goblin is ok and there's another (I forget the name of) that has astroturf instead of carpet. The club on the road is the Zodiac (Part owned by Thom Yorke) which is an excellent venue and a pretty good club too. The cowley road has a couple of really good record shops, Polar records being where trompe le monde was purchased many moons ago, and a good variety of eateries as well, moroccan, sushi, plenty of chinese restraunts and good old fashioned kebab shops.
If you head a small way up the headington road though there is a couple of superb sci fi book and comic stores (not that I know anything about that of course) and two eally great restraunts, Fishers which specialises in seafood and the pink giraffe which is vegetarian oriental and they do the best tofu I have ever tried. http://www.oxfordrestaurantguide.co.uk/fishers/ the pubs around there are all very nice, in fact down the one side street a place called the star has a great beer garden and a greater jukebox.
For the posher night out there is a plethora of cocktail bars and amazing italian restraunts more in the centre of town. On there are very nice places to eat and you can't go wrong with gourmet pizza (bacon and goats cheese mmmmmm) the Camel bar is nice and if it's still open cafe bohem does the best cocktails I have ever tried.
Near the ashmolean museum is a side street called little claredon street with a browns, a cafe rouge and a fabulous french place I can't remember the name of. The covered market is worth a visit, the fresh cookie stall rules and above a card shop is georginas coffee shop, an absolute must. Small and very cool in decor, chunky wood tables and chairs, free papers, brilliand coffee and cakes and bagels to die for. The ceiling is plastered with iconic posters and it is just too cool for school. in fact Georgina's, Covered Market
By far the funkiest cafe in town, Georgina's has the most tempting food we've seen. We only came for breakfast coffee and toast, but could easily spend all day here on bagels, salads, gargantuan ciabatta sandwiches and Lots Of Cake. see! why would I lie!

This is actually on the road I used to live on, I lived in a house not too disimilar, out of oxford centre in headington this has advantages and disadvantages. Headington is a lovely place (most of Radiohead lived there when I did) and old headington (a sub part of headington) is very olde worlde with beamed cottages and cobble stoned streets, there's a gorgeous pub there called the White stag I think with big flag stones on the floor and an open fire, it's really charming. Headington is also convenient for the oxford tube - http://www.oxfordtube.com/ - a bus service that goes to london very frequently about every ten minutes or so and is dirt cheap. Headington has a massive park called south park that overlooks the towering spires and is really lovely. It's also convenient for the Cowley road as they run concurrent (the cowley road verges in one direction from the point, the headington road another)

I'm up for one of these quiz nights, this isn't something that really occurs back home and I'm not sure what it would entail, but that makes it all the better. If it's possible for Tre and other London-area-ers to come by that would be great. If not, well, Saturday I'm officially busy, but perhaps Friday or Sunday. I might actually go to a musical on Sunday, but of course there's always after.
And yes, indeed, Mike, I must admit you are the drinking master. I've never seen someone drink three drinks at the same time, that is going down in my book of legend. I mean two, okay, it's been done, but three?! And mixing a hiball, beer, and wine to boot. Sir, I am in your debt.
Tre, thanks for the info again, I actually have a printout of that (I recall it was you that originally convinced me to come by Oxford earlier in my adventure). I'm going there tomorrow afternoon and I'll spend a couple days there then London. And, scarily, then home.

Yay! more to pub quiz the betterer! and Simon it's more like three minutes walk, and it's cold out there you know.
Pub quiz is as simple as it sounds Dean, pub with a quiz in. This one is a music quiz, first round is a pictures round, second round they play intros to songs, third round is the specialist round, intros to one band, we've had east 17 Sinatra and Level 42 amongst others. Round 4 is the talky bit round about music news and things (How old is Faye from Steps kind of crap) and the last round is usually a TV themed music intro round.
We've never won but we've come really close.
The thing is, you may find it a little lame, it's more of a personal challenge now. Went one week and am determined to keep going until a prize is won.
Also Dean, I kind of guess it depends on where you are staying and where you need to get to. It may be that it'd be easier to blow off the quiz and meet on neutral territory.
I'll be tagging along though, of course. I was going to let other people sort it out though hehe, unemployment has made me lazy.
toeknee - sorry didn't mean to type over you there, I lived in Oxford for some time which is why I typed all that. I miss that city.
Asides the students that is.
