Alright, so this is now almost official. All I have to do is secure some sort of aeronautical transport, but I shall be otherwise heading towards London for my eventual return home this Dec.
Specifically, I'm looking at flying over there on the 15th of Nov, possibly to Belfast, heading down to Dublin (anywhere else I should hit in Ireland?), crossing over to Liverpool, a few places in England/Wales, then a bit more time in London and area before crossing the sea once more Dec 5.
So... first of all I write asking for tips on places to see in my . Secondly, because I know there are several of you (Cheeseman, Tre, Bazza, Mojo) who said I should say something if/when I return, and thirdly because there are a lot of good bands playing the UK at that time and I don't want to miss any must-see's (like the Breeders, for example) if I can help it. Although I suspect I'll be begging from a scalper if I DO go see them.
And there you have it. That's my email. I'm thinking in Britain Liverpool, Manchester (?), Cardiff, Oxford,?
That's all for me. Watch the skies in fear...

Honestly though, definitely come to London, I can't really speak for anywhere else. Oxford's worth a trip. Scotland is lovely if you can get there, as well.

oh, i'd definitey recommend scotland too...drink some delicious single malt whisky and have haggis, neaps and tatties. tough to beat. if i was you, i'd spend 40% of your time in ireland, 40% in scotland and the last 10% in london.
as someone who's spent some considerable time in the UK/Ireland as a tourist, thats how i'd recommend seeing the best out of the place.

Uh... That's 90%... I second the Scotland recommendation, but I think Dean went there at the beginning of his trip. Don't know if you went deep in the Highlands, so if you haven't, definitely try to go to Glencoe and around Loch Ness (it's basically the only places I know in Scotland, but they're great).

well i'd factored in 10% for the time where you won't know where you are from the excessive amounts of whisky and whiskey you'll be drinking.......
but the isle of sky - in fact anywhere in the highlands in worth several trips. and also, the ring of kerry and associated spots along the southern coast of ireland are definite musts. the seafood chowder alone is worth the cost of transatlantic airfare.

Dean! does this mean I could finally get to meet you? There's still tickets on sale for those Breeders gigs - come on, you know it makes sense.
OH and York is nice. I'm biased though. |

Cool!
You can stay at mine if you come to Manchester if you like Dean. It's in the city centre. The New Pornographers are playing on 4th December at Night & Day Cafe, but hurry if you want a ticket. Bumble and I are going so it would be cool if you came too.
Definitely go to London, and try to go to Brighton too. I have never been to Ireland but if Benji recommends it then it is probably full of sheep. Maybe try Wales then too.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

Dean has to come to London because he owes me drinks. He said it!
Oxford you should see, did I write you a list of essential things to do in Oxford? I love that city and it's easy to get to.
Wales... north or south? it depends what you want out of it really, north wales pretty with mountains and dolphins and things, south wales "up and coming" cardiff city is nice enough plenty to see and do. I think most people can live without wales. But if you're going over from Ireland you could get the ferry to north wales (Hollyhead) then travel along the coast (take in anglesey where there is dolphins and such things off the coast, and church island which is sweet and nice little villages, over to bangor next to snowdonia mountain range, down to betwys where there is stunning waterfalls, mountainside lake camp sites (although it will be far too cold) and the ugly house oh andthe dr who museum if thats still there) to chester (smaller and nicer than liverpool, but very close so you can do both if the mood takes you)
and from there you can get to manchester easy peasy.
Liverpoool, not a whole lot to do really except scally baiting and drinking. Oh the big churchy thing with the trees inside, thats good to look at for ten minutes or so, and the really bizarre inner city sculptures.
Manchester... meh |

Do you know Bob Allen?
(This is a running joke round my office - I fairly reasonably asked one of our temps, who was from York and involved in the music biz up there (Rick Witter stole a guitarist of his or something), whether he knew Bob Allen. Apparently that was far too random to be a 'normal' question)

thats correct Benji - the area is called the Gaeltacht and lots of irish schoolkids are carted off there to learn irish during the summer (but its actually an excuse to kiss loads of girls ). Spiddle is gorgeous - when did you go there? hope you bought an aran sweater! cheers.

Well thats what I thought! But nooo... One day I'll introduce him, I swear. Last time I saw Bob was at a Ben Christophers gig in London, he'd been out on something like a 24 hour bender with Hayseed Dixie. That sounds painful to me, my liver aches just telling the story.

no, i didn't actually purchase an aran sweater. my loss aye! i was in spiddle in 2002 i believe. (the to be) mrs benji and i spent 10 days travelling, camping and drinking round ireland. honestly the best 10 days of my life.....loved the people, loved the country. without doubt the best place i've ever visited.
my university supervisor back in New Zealand was irish and when i got back from my holiday, he said the same thing about spiddle - how he got carted off there when he was a young lad, but all he really did was kiss girlies.....
my main memory of spiddle is sitting on the sea wall drinking erdinger watching the goings on of the lovely place. oh, and spending 30 euros(!!!) on scallops at a restaurant there...
