Does anyone else think that DITS sounds better than Honeycomb?--I personally dislike the mix in HC; it's really sleepy. Also, isn't it interesting that such a strange, strange man like JT would catch FB's attention...makes one wonder. |

to me DITS is one of richest recordings in Frank's catalog. i'm not sure what the technical specs were for Honeycomb, but this topic sheds some light on why DITS arguably sounds better than some of the other live-to-2-track albums

Over two years ago, deep in the jungles of the "King Holds Court" thread, on Sept 17, 2003, before we knew anything of Honeycomb, I asked Frank this question:
quote: Just in case Frank isn't sick of the board yet - I'm curious how Jon Tiven ended up working on the "Headache" b-sides. He's an interesting fella. (I've never met him, though.)
And do you have any favorite truck stops in Texas?
Frank never answered by Jon Tiven question. Or my truck stop question. Or, for that matter, anyone's questions for, like, the next 15 pages of the thread. Too busy livin', rockin', divorcin', and Pixies reunion negotiatin', I suppose.
I do believe Jon Tiven has posted here about how he and Frank started working together. Tracks for an Otis Blackwell tribute album, if I remember correctly. |

You can't really compare DiTS and HC in terms of production, they weren't recorded in the same conditions at all. I agree about DiTS having an incredibly good sound. SMYT comes pretty close.

JT,
Thanks for the discography. That is some interesting stuff. Because of you being on this site, I picked your Blue Guru album w/Ego Trip and Ellis Hooks "Uncomplicated". I'm always interested in getting info on new bands/music. I've also been turned onto Tom Waits and Knife & Fork while at FB.net.

Mr. Tiven:
Thank you for your valuable contributions. You seem to be a prickly sunavabitch, and I suspect, based on your postings, a laid-back Midwestern-bred guy like me wouldn't get along with you. I also suspect, based on everything I know, that I wouldn't be likely to pal around with Frank Black either. But I'm here in this forum, aren't I? I Must be here because... uh... I dig his music. (And I'm enough of a fan that I'm willing to explore topics that include his producers, and their careers.)
So, who cares? That just makes you two colorful, interesting characters who create brilliant music that I generally enjoy. (I don't mean to imply that you two are similar; rather that you seem to be similarly different from me.) Who you are, Mr. Tiven, makes for a goddamn great producer, and I'm pleased as punch that you're generous enough to share your thoughts with us. So, thanks.
And, goodness gracious, maybe I've gotten you all wrong. And maybe you're just instictively bristling, as any human would, at the real or perceived slights against you that would occur on any Internet forum where your name was brought in.
And perhaps I have no business making personal commentary about somebody I've never met.
The last statement strikes me as the most true, so I'll stick by that one. |

I don't remember this conclusion being reached either, though I remember the theory...

I agree that DITS sounds better, but Honeycomb is still pretty cool. I think part of my preference for DITS might be due more to the variety of instruments used than to the production value, though.

Otherfellers & otherladies, I didn't want to bust anyone, but that jtanner poster was not me but speaking as if he was me. And I found that puzzling but non-offensive as nothing he said seemed to be negatory. But Noisy as my witness, he is not only not me, he isn't even my alter ego.

Again,I'm just a writer doing some research, but no mention in Tiven's bio of the upcomming Holly Beth Vincent record which he co-produced and played on,just prior to the new Frank record. Especially given her ties to Frank Black [Frank producer-brother Nick Vincent,Eric Feldman,Morris Tepper...] Great tracks with Frank,by the way! |

Hope you enjoyed the Rollins Show performance on IFC last night. I did.
As long as someone is dragging my thread up, I might as well toss in a little self-plugging and let you know that tonight on IFC they're running ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE, a film about veteran soul acts (Wilson Pickett, Sam Moore, Ann Peebles). I produced the music for the film, there are even a few scenes in which I appear (with Mr. Pickett), and it opens with a song I wrote (with my wife Sally and my friend Dan Penn) called "Soul Survivor" sung by W.P. There are some terrific performances in it, particularly Wilson's.
bye, Jon Tiven

Good movie. I was especially moved by Rufus and Carla Thomas. They're so true they could kick ass to all the so-called "independent" rockers. To me those people are exactly like Mike Watt.
Something else: James Brown and Diana Ross didn't want to talk? I guess they don't have easy ways... |
