Oh yeah! I have to give a big shout of thanks for all the inside information he's shared. And an even bigger one for answering my many questions.
From what i've read, he's enjoyed an amazing career in the business. I'm so glad I have/had the opportunity to "talk" to him. |

EDIT: 19/10/05 Dear all, After much consideration, I'm leaving this link up (it's already been quoted anyway so it wouldn't make a great deal of difference, but its a principle thing). I fully understand why Jon has taken offence at this article, however I'm happy to leave it there to balance out the rather cloying tone in the other articles posted. By his own admission, approximately 98% of the internet is full of nonsense and drivel, and this may very well be part of that. As they say, opinions are like backsides: everyone has one, and most of them stink. However, in the interests of open discussion I see no reason why I should remove this link. I would, however, like to restate that there wasn't any malicious intent in posting it: if I've taken exception to Jon, it's since he reacted to me in an (as I feel) inappropriate manner, and there was no ill feeling at the time. I have no idea what's true and what's not in any of the articles so, while I see how it could be taken (albeit mistakenly) as a personal attack, its certainly not. I try to be a reasonable guy and I take no pleasure in causing offence, and I therefore express my regret if Jon was offended by anything in the article - please understand that it's clearly not my personal opinion. I hope this clears up one or two things. Jon, please feel free to email me should you wish for further clarification. Cheers, Simon

I was actually looking at the page in the first link today, trying to find what Bowie stuff he produced! And I've seen the page in the third link before. |

Dear ladies and gentleman,
Thanks for the interest.
Regarding the link Cheeseman has posted, if you live long enough and get some success/fame, someone from your past who is bitter enough will write something nasty about you. I knew Richard Meltzer briefly in my teenage years, and he was very threatened by the new crop of rock writers who were able to achieve more than he had. Cameron, Danny and I were young and ambitious, a major crime. Danny Sugerman, R.I.P., was a good dude who flew too close to the sun. Cameron has achieved great success as a film director and remains a good friend. I saw him about two weeks ago. Regarding the author of the piece, I have neither heard from Meltzer or seen him since I left my teens---that's thirty years. I read the article when it originally appeared and was stunned by how vile and untruthful it was, and will not read it again.
You can google me all day and find all sorts of stuff about me, some actually interesting and accurate. I'd be happy to do a live chat thing if you want it.
Now I've got to go mix the new record!
best, Jon Tiven

Tiven,
Are you famous? I'm sorry if the answer seems obvious to everyone but me, but hey, I'm French. I thought you were only one of those random forum members.

I think a reasonable answer would be that he's famous to people who pay attention to the technical side of the music industry.

he didn't. it's kind of like when you put "director of environmental services" on your resume when in fact your job is unclogging toilets in the men's restroom.

Sorry for the sarcasm. I was just a bit underwhelmed by the page long resume. The offending article about Tiven, Crowe, and Sugarman was obviously written by some one with a personal boner for these guys. No need to defend yourself, Jon. All we need to do is listen to Honeycomb, and you are golden. Nice job (tires screeching in reverse).
I suppose we could get some pretty cool info out of Jon. He seems like an accomodating cat. Pick a time! |

Well Tiven, I have to say your CV does look impressive. You haven't been idle during all those years. I must admit I haven't heard of almost any of those people you talk about, but I'm pretty sure people like you, who dedicated their life tu true music, would never produce popular music like Britney Spears.
I don't know if it still holds, but I would definitely be glad if that live chat thing was organized - I'm always happy to chat with older people who have lived and often got so many stories to transmit to the younger generations.
However, I live in Europe, so I guess we should organize 2 live chats. there's a 6 hours difference, and I think the European live chat should take place in evening here - about 4am in Nashville. I hope this doesn't bother you. Please let us know how we could organize this.
Thank you again for helping us discover obscure artists you produce that we would never have heard of otherwise.

The French version of TOTY (which is what is in the discography) includes the five tracks I produced by Frank.
I did not write for Iggy but I produced one track on him on my Don Covay Tribute album. I wrote and produced four tracks by B.B. King, and produced one track by Robert Plant which appears on his greatest hits album and my Arthur Alexander Tribute.
And Meltzer's toilet fetish is not my problem. He's a strange, sad guy. Keeps dead animals preserved in jello in his fridge (really).
I know I'm a controversial and polarizing personality, but I'm not a liar. All my credits are bonafide. The Bowie thing was a remix of "I Feel Free" which I have detailed in another thread about Frank Recording In Nashville, Carl, I suggest you drag yourself over there.
Why all the anger? Why all the nastiness? It's not good for you.
love, Jon Tiven |

To quote my boy floop, my bad. For most of the others you've marked where you've done one or two songs on records, so that threw me. You understand the confusion - it's a Frank Black forum after all, you can understand people being picky.
Although, y'know, who doesn't keep dead animals preserved in jello in their fridge these days?

Dear Cheeseman,
Since you posted a link to an article that is 98% bullsh*t, I think it's a little much to take me to task for not specifying that I only produced 5 tracks on the cd. I did specify that it was the French version, so anyone who knows his FB discography would say, oh, what is the diff between the French version and the others? This is my official discography, I did not tailor it for this site.
As for why the love, PixieSteve, we all need a little love. Even you. Do not look a gift horse in the mouth, it might throw you.

Hey man, you've given us permission to google you back there, no need to get snotty - it's the internet, 98% of anything on there is nonsense. I was civil enough to admit my error right? It was hardly 'taking to task'.

The French version has 5 extra tracks?! How did I not hear about that?!
I have the limited edition with the bonus CD, with Headache (NY City Version), Hate Me and Amnesia. Are these tracks included on the French version of the album? |
