To be serious though, I didn't like the Office that much except for the odd flash of hilarity. I didn't like his stand up because he seemed to be Brent on a stage. I thought I'd give extras a fair chance and the end song is great. It's just so poor though, in the last three shows the only thing I found to laugh at (and even then it was a giggle at best) was the Bowie song.
But then, Cat Stevens, it cheers me up every time. |

Season 2 definitely isn't a patch on the first season, everyone is unanimous on that. I find myself wondering "what's Gervais' and Merchants next project going to be after Extras" while i'm actually watching season 2. Basically i'm waiting for Extras to end. I'd like to see a third season, but only if it's as good as the the first

I just saw the end of tonight's episode, with Danielle Radcliffe and Warwick Davis. Pretty funny. I've been trying to watch the second episode on the BBC's site, but their media player isn't working!

Incidently, I saw the Simpsons episode written and starring Gervais yesterday. I thought it was mildly funny in parts, but for the most part was awful. Especially once Gervais actually enters the show.
 I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

Yeah - i agree with tre on the most part here.
Wasnt really a fan of The Office - id watch it if it was on...not out of choice - and would rarely watch a whole episode. The US version looks bloody awful - i saw one episode.
Quite liked the 1st extras season. This season is not too bad - but nohting great. As i think i mentioned in my last post, its kinda boring for me because ive heard most of the material from the pod casts.
The pod casts are my fav gervais/merchant output i think. Didnt like them at first, but they are ridiculous. no talent or anything to it - complete shambles of 3 men in a room. so bad its good type thing. I think its like being a fly on the wall - thats why its so popular.

I can't understand how anyone could not be a fan of The Office. Really. I agree with Steve that the podcasts did kind of go too far and get predictable all at once, but I guess I'm the opposite of Mel. Loved at first and now don't bother. I still enjoy somewhat if I listen, but...
Also, the thing with Extras will be that it is quite contingent on their guest. Patrick Stewart is one of the funniest episodes, and not necessarily because of Ricky Gervais.

I haven't actually listened to the podcasts; I always presumed they were much like the radio shows where it's basically just Ricky Gervais laughing in his girlish, high-pitched way.

Thats one thing which really bugs me - rickys laugh.
Yeah - i guess so dean,we are quite opposite. i couldnt stand the pod casts at all at first. everything irritated me. To be fair, they are getting boring now - which is why they are stopping doing them, i guess. Im just fascinated that three 'every' day guys, have made money out of making their private jokes public. the amount of £££ they have made - doesnt bear thinking about!
the rumours of them doing a 'serious drama' could be...interesting?

Maybe we should wait till next week (Jonathon Ross episode/season finale) to pass a full judgement, but would a third season make this show completely stale and redundant?

If they made a third series I know I'd watch it. I know this series probably hasn't been quite as good as the first but it's still a hell of a lot funnier than most stuff on the telly at the moment.

Well that's why I said it's funnier than most stuff. Mitchell and Webb is absolutely brilliant. Probably my favourite programme of all at the moment.
Thursdays on BBC2 are great at the moment!

personally i really don't find that mitchell and webb look funny cheeseman. it's in stark contrast to extras (it has a laugter track for a start), so if you prefer it you probably just have a different sense of humour. a gayer one.
i thought the last ep of extras was a bit meh. i didn't like the masturbation bits; it just seemed a bit over the top. not that the celeb cameos aren't over the top already. ricky gervais is good because of the realism, too much has been lost in extras.

Ricky Gervais'Extras' Series Two ended last night here in the U.K, on a relative high and open either to a Third Series (unlikely though, I think, there seems to be other ideas in the pipeline now) or easily seen as relatively terminal, a little tired perhaps, intentionally short-lived. This time around it's a continuation that puts Millman into situations that perhaps most dreaming of fame (as he is during Series One) might not consider, the manipulation and lack of control that you might think would be instantly yours on a breakthrough in your career, with little match between that fantasy and the reality as is revealed.
The sitcom he writes and stars in for the BBC (within 'Extras'), called 'When the Whistle Blows', is a deft example of the broadest style of commercial comedy which skips past much of the grey area material like 'Little Britain' which has gone from edgy BBC Two cult show to merchandise cash-cow at a quick pace, and is a more actively mainstream show with an ironic "Is he havin' a laff?" catchphrase. Some fulltime yes men staff at the BBC that pull all the individuality out of Millman's work are still in evidence this time around, showing how much life can be pulled out of good work all too easily; not something easily admitted to. The mood, style, shooting style, even the casting (Lisa Tarbuck, inspired - she's done exactly this kind of show in the past) and the theme tune are easy observations perhaps, none the less remain very faithfully translated into the body of a much different kind of comedy, as 'Extras' and its portrayal of Millman, Maggie and Darren Lamb actually is - and that's where the best mileage lays in this show, and that's where the focus mostly remains.
This time around has great moments showing Maggie going from the hunter to the hunted, suffering at the hands of condom-wielding hormone-vessel Daniel Radcliffe. Social faux pas a plenty happen at the hands of Millman's encounters with disabled or terminally-ill children, the homeless guy in the street by his new flat, and various celebrity guests who play a less obvious role in the balance of the stories thanks to the inclusion of many more small cameos that generally work better than the major ones... and yet the major appearances (Chris Martin of Coldplay) stand out in the usual manner, as per Series One, look a little out of place, certainly cause a distraction from the main charms of the show.
It's all a real mixed bag this time around, some of the guest appearances simply didn't work, the success rate of this short run of six shows is easily 50/50, and some of the episodes barely had a decent moment in them (David Bowie, cringeworthy. Chris Martin, not really convincing), others were inspired (Ronnie Corbett, Moira Stewart at the Baftas, really against type, quite daringly so), and it all managed to be both worryingly impossible to tell if the attitudes were real or ironic because the switches in how Millman is portrayed. Yes, the mix of a man under manipulation and a man who clearly understands who he is, what he wants to do, how it should be done, is switched between without a moments notice to adjust our views, and it's perhaps the most fascinating aspect hidden beneath the surface of the show. Most consistent performance in the whole series, the underrated, talented, and very entertaining Mr Shaun Williamson, and for that I was greatful.
Still, in the end we get a surprising (well, "-ish") cameo from Robert DeNiro, and a good turn by Jonathan Ross in the same final episode as Millman's career looks to be taking-off to yet another level. The Nudie Pen sequences are gold in the final episode. Oh, and for those interested in a little side note, 'Stardust', a DeNiro movie that's coming next year, sees Gervais as Ferdy the Fence, and the films screenplay is the first to be written by..... Jane Goldman, who is infact wife to Jonathan Ross. Nice touch, strange connection.

That's me. M&W took a while to grow on me too, even though I was a big fan of Peep Show, yadda yadda. Now though, it's brill. I likes it.
