Yeah, I love Extras. The Patrick Stewart episode was sublime.
Looking forward to seeing Bowie's episode. |

Extras is hilarious. I cant be arsed with people who are always saying its not as good as the Pixies.
I can honestly say I've never heard anyone compare them like that before.

There were a few lame jokes that made me cringe. Namely the Chegwin stuff, which got very tiring, and Andy's shout of "That's lunch." - Extras' comedy was so unique, but this stuff could be found in any sitcom.
The phone call at the beginning where Maggie was being really dumb was stupid and unfunny, also. Why is having Andy tell Maggie everything twice funny? "Are you doing a speech?" - WHAT?! Call that comedy, Gervais? That's like something Honey off Eastenders would say! Why did they make Maggie and Chegwin so superhumanly stupid? Me stupid - audience laugh, hahaha.
Barry from Eastenders deserves his acclaim, but his Shakespeare scene was unfunny and unimaginative. Ricky and Steve just seem to be doing what they do with Karl Pilkington with Shaun Williamson - just placing him in front a camera/microphone and letting him do the rest, and just pray and hope that the easily-pleased monkeys at home laugh.
Still, some amazing jokes/scenes - the Lenny Henry thing, the catchphrase t-shirts, the very last scene - this is what makes Extras the best show on tv. |

Gervais and Merchant are guilty of going over the same ground a lot (the political correctness jokes, for example), and there were some hackneyed moments in this. However, there were a number of funny bits. Some of the Keith Chegwin stuff was good, and Barry-from-Eastenders having half the canteen fall out of his jacket after Millman holds him up as a model of integrity, for instance.

Yeah, 2x01 of Extras was rather lame...hopefully it picks up!
I hated the first season and a half of the US Office, but after about 2x06, it becomes HILARIOUS as they no longer depend on the UK stunts (seriously, i saw references up until about there..)
My Name is Earl is fantastic too..
I've been really enjoying Family Guy - didn't like the first few seasons, but it's hooked me now.
Watched a lot of Lucky Louie, laughed a few times, but never really enjoyed it... It sort of borrows from how The Office leaves you feeling uncomfortable...but then they don't clean it up..haha..
Jon Stewart is a must for me, as well as Colbert - he's getting close to the point where i might say i like Colbert better than Stewart....the brilliance is really coming through....
That's The Shish Report on Comedy. =)

I downloaded Extras 2x01 from Usenet. Just watched it last night and thought it was as good as last season's episodes. The hackneyed sitcom jokes (when he was wearing the wig and glasses) were hilarious for their lameness ("Is he 'avin' a laugh???"), along with the audience in their catch-phrase t-shirts.
I really enjoyed Maggie's conversations with the condescending actress broad (can't remember her name).

What? NO!
It started to return to form this week, with good scenes like the homeless man, Barry and Darren pulling women, and the Bowie scene, but it STILL has a few cheap "sitcom" gags that haven't quite been filtered out yet - the Sky phone call joke ESPECIALLY.
Also, the character of Maggie is really starting to bum me out. She was great in series 1, but they've just made her far too stupid in this series. It's like they took your basic, average sitcom template and cast her in the role of the doberman. It's been seen so many times before. This kind of character is unoriginal and made only to appeal to dumb people like those shown in the pub in episode 2. I was just waiting for her to mess up the autograph thing in that particular scene. Never before has a scene been so predictable. |

It's been really patchy, I think. For a moment I thought it was pulling the same trick as Adaptation, where the film gets bad on purpose once the drugs/guns/car chases start. But no.

Am I wrong in thinking exactly the same joke was used in an early episode of Im Alan Partridge?
The second series of extras has really disapointed me so far (perhaps moreso due to Mitchell and Webb being shown after it...)

No you are not wrong. Not only has Partridge done that joke already, it was twice as funny when he did it.
I dont really know what to make of Extras series two at the moment... Its very funny in places but you cant help but get the feeling that they are going over a lot of old ground. I also dont see the need to show so much of When the Whistle Blows, within the show itself, it just seems bizarre and fails to add anything to the programme.

I rarely laugh out loud at sit coms - i dont often find them funny.
However, like the rest of the WORLD im a big gervais fan - not from the office (had its moments - but just not as funny as every one keeps saying) - but his pod casts and flannimals are brilliant.
However, int this second series - alot of the jokes are just from the pod casts. The homeless thing (hes homeless - where did he see my show?) was used on the pod cast, and a few other bits and pieces - mostly lines from Karl.
But, i do still really love it. The Bowie song was brilliant last night.

I can't stand Gervais so any songs about him being a stupid fat pug nosed loser are fine by me. Extras kind of blows. |

haha the homeless guy bit was pure Curb your enthusiasm. actually, when gervais interviewed larry david he mentioned about how he has to be nice to people now he's famous. plus tipping is a big theme in CYE. influences becoming very apparent!

Yes, I agree with Steve. You could really picture Larry doing that.
Actually, a very similar scene happens in Season Four of 'Curb' when Larry attempts to tip the porters in his hotel lobby.
But anyway, I am really enjoying the new series of 'Extras'. With regards to what people are saying about the 'weakness' of the first episode, I can see what you mean. But I think the series will look better once all the epsiodes have played. Last series, I didn't find the Ben Stiller epsiode too great, but when looking back on it, it makes for great viewing. And I think that David Bowie's song was one of the best he's written in the last ten years. |

I thought last nights Extras was good, but I liked the first of the series more. I didn't think the Bowie bit was that funny really.

We just watched a couple episodes on HBO on demand last night. It had a couple of small moments, but all in all it seemed lacking. When it was over I likened the feeling I had to eating a bunch of pringles and the slightly empty yet full sickly feeling you get afterwards. I don't know that I've ever done that, but that's what it felt like. I think.
I don't like many tv shows in general. Pretty much watch Dirty Jobs, old Bugs Bunny, a couple IFC/Sundance movies in a blue moon. About to drop the HBO, since we got it to be able to watch the Katrina doc. Already bought the Deadwood boxset - that was the first show in a long while that I have enjoyed. |

I finally watched the two new Extras (Orlando Bloom and David Bowie) and perhaps because I was expecting the worst from reviews here quite enjoyed them. Not so subtle, I suppose, but still pretty funny.
And since The Office (which deserves two threads of its own - a US / UK one) has been mentioned, I'll say that about two weeks ago, I finally decided to grab the US version (being a big fan of the UK one) and thoroughly enjoyed it. As in, watched pretty much all of them that I had downloaded in a back-to-back groundbreaking marathon that caused me to eschew sleep and personal grooming. I know there are probably people out there who haven't really bothered with the US one either because the first episode was such a horrible rip off or because, well, they've seen the UK version, but this show has a life of its own and I love it.
Jim working the other office was a pleasant surprise, and yeah, the girl explaining the looks Jim gives to the camera - cracked me up.

I thought Extras was pretty good tonight, better than last week. Suicide_Samurai is right about Maggie being to stupid but I'm starting to think the agent (Stephen Merchant, can't remember his character's name) is just too dumb aswell. It's getting annoying.
