Great commentaire about Bryan Ferry!!
Back in 93, I liked the fact that Frank Black said he was rather "concervative", without being ashamed of it.
It's honnest for an artist to say he is more on the right wing. Honnest and frank.
Artist who earn money with their art are by definition on the right wing. Trying to please peoploids like that ugly Bono... Brr... Gimme some good old torch songs!!! I laugh at people who pretend they are on the left wing in general. I bet they would never share the little money they have and do not hesitate to be dependent of the state they criticize so well.
At least just say you're not interested.

Conservative in what way, though? The word can mean a lot of different things. Certainly, in a lot of the world, conservatism is linked with nationalism, which Frank comes out against in the Spin article.
quote: Artist who earn money with their art are by definition on the right wing.
I don't see how that follows. I think a fair case could even be made in the exact opposite direction, since supporting the arts is often considered to be a left-wing position. Hardcore conservatives might argue that being a musician isn't a real job.
Certainly, a conservative viewpoint is often associated with a love of money above all else. But wanting to make money doesn't necessarily indicate mammonism. As a general rule, people need money to survive, even if they think there are more important things in life.
quote: I laugh at people who pretend they are on the left wing in general. I bet they would never share the little money they have and do not hesitate to be dependent of the state they criticize so well.
My opinions on this matter are somewhat mixed. I agree that it can be somewhat hypocritical for a rich person to complain about the economic divide. On the other hand, there's only so much one person can do. As long as you pay your taxes and contribute to the occasional worthy cause, I don't think you're a horrible traitor to the left wing for being rich.
I think part of it is the difference between idealism and realism. Pretty much everyone has their own idea as to what the world should be like, and possibly COULD be like, if enough other people were to go along with it. On the other hand, we also realize that we live in a world that is very resistant to change, and we can't change the world on our own. I definitely believe that wealth should be distributed more evenly, but I think that's a change that obviously can't be made overnight. I support steps in the right direction (say, government programs to help the unemployed find jobs), while opposing what I perceive as backwards steps (like, say, tax cuts for the rich). But I don't think we can just redistribute the world's wealth overnight.
As for criticizing the government, I see nothing wrong with pointing out what they do wrong, while acknowledging and taking advantage of the few things they do right.

In the English language, the word "conservative" doesn't necessarily have to describe a political position.
"Conservative" can just mean a respect for tradition. It can also mean a certain tasteful restraint (one can dress conservatively, for example). |

As far as I know, the right is - and has always been - more anti-state than the left..

Yes. I'm conservative. I like traditions, believe strongly in social rules and manners, and I lead a rather quiet and boring life. But, politically I'm a hardcore liberal.
Frank Black saying he's conservative, doesn't necessarily mean he's a Republican or of that political bent. |

Yes, but "conservative dress" on men doesn't usually include eyeliner. ;)

Frank said he was conservative in 1993, which doesn't mean he is now because conservative means something different now than it did then. The definition has moved to the right quite a ways.
It's all rather confusing anyway. George W. Bush is considered to be a conservative but look at his spending habits. I think one can be socially conservative without being fiscally conservative or vice versa. I am fiscally conservative but socially liberal for example. And then there is the matter of conservation and being a conservationist. "Conservationist" these days means the opposite of "conservative" ... what up with that? They used to be the same. Ask Teddy Roosevelt.
Back to Frank, I think a song like "Monkey Gone" paints him as a conservationist. Not a conservative. But that was 1989. He could have changed since then, just as he could have changed since 1993.
His comment about chauvinistic nationalism -- or jingoism, as we call it -- certainly would seem to suggest he ain't down with G.W., who makes jingoism his favorite fucking pastime.
Maybe THE MAN will drop by and enlighten us to where he truly lies on the political spectrum.

I loved his response on the forum when asked who he'd be voting for, along the lines of
"Charles votes, Frank doesn't"
It's a private matter, isn't it? |

Frank voted for Ralph Nader in 2000. He has said so.
Conservative means the same thing(s) now that it meant in 1993. It is a very common way of describing non-flamboyance/tastefulness/restraint.
In 2005, a man in a gray suit and striped tie or a woman in a beige pantsuit could be described as dressing conservatively.
In 2005, you might hear someone on the news give a conservative estimate (meaning less severe/large than it could potentially be) of how many people were killed in a hurricane.
In 2005, someone might invest money conservatively (in a sure thing like savings bonds or something) rather than taking the risk of investing it in a new business or a stock.
In 2005, someone looking for a loan might borrow money conservatively (borrow as little as possible).
In 2005, someone might want a conservative amount of hot fudge on their sundae or take a conservative dosage of a medication or apply a conservative amount of detergent to their laundry. This means amounts that are as little as possible (as opposed to liberal amounts, which would larger than normal.)
Frank Black lives quietly, reads a lot, doesn't do or say outrageous things to get attention, is well-known for nothing but making music (as opposed to being known for legal troubles or for playing a part in a scandal), probably isn't a drug addict, probably doesn't go skydiving, and probably doesn't wrestle alligators as a hobby.
Sounds fairly conservative to me. |

I couldn't agree more:
How about the worst? Nationalistic chauvinism. Everyone knowing history and the world and the world being a smaller place and it's all connected and blah blah blah. And I'm not against culture, I'm not saying that. I'm into culture, totally to the max. It just seems to me that too many people are uptight about what country they're from and what that means to them. It does more harm than good. It seems like people should be less loyal, less into flags, and loyal to something else. The whole concept of sovereignty is eroding anyway and clinging to it is gonna have a lot of negative effects, the most obvious being war.
