I saw the remake of this t'other day with Denzel Washington about corporate-gubbermintal brainwashed assassins, then saw an interview with Jonathan Demme in which he said he had pretty stiff competition from reality, bless im.

The original is very good. Some real innovative filming techniques. And Sinatra's performance is great. Hav'nt seen the remake.

Angela Lansbury, who played Laurence Harvey's mother, was actually only three years his senior!

It's Jessica Fletcher, wasn't she born old?

Newo, in my opinion, FUCK the remake...it's a travesty. The original is superior, and one of the best political thrillers ever made as a film (also check out The Parralax View and Winter Kills).
Also, Angela Lansbury turns in one of the most slimey, chilling, and evil performances ever! She's great! I like Streep a lot, but she doesn't hold a candle in this case.
I implore you to watch the original NOW!

Yeah, Lansbury is great. So is James Gregory as her pathetically wipped weasel of a husband...

Yes he is a hoot! Ketchup bottle: "There are currently 57 card-carrying communists in Washington today!"
And then there's Laurence Harvey...

"Senator Iseland is NOT my father! Get that into your head right now!"
"Goucho Marx! Ben...I just made a joke! Mark that down in your books! Raymond Shaw made a joke!"
"I'm NOT loveable!"
"There's only one thing I'm sure of, mother...and that is that I loathe and despise both you and Johnny Iseland."
"Twelve days of Christmas? One day of Christmas is loathsome enough!"

Janet Leigh:

"Eugenie Rose...but I prefer Rosie. It smells of brown soap and beer." (what the flip does that mean??! So great!)

Sinatra has a couple a doozies for lines as well:

"What was Raymond doing with his hands?!! How did the old lady turn into a Russian?!!"
"We're busting up the joint, we're tearing out all the wires. We're busting it up so good all the queen's horses and all the queen's men will never put ol' Raymond back together again!"

and the ultimate line to end a movie:

"Oh, hell...hell." (Thunder)

Damn I love this movie! Yes, it's cheesey, but it's great! Anything with Henry Silva is cheesily great!
