I think the thing with End of Miles is that it´s a pretty solid Catholics song, but that´s all it is. It sounds like every other song they´ve ever done but without any of the magic. Rich Gilberts lead actually annoys me on this song, he´s not one for much variation is he? I also find myself getting annoyed at the term "end of miles" for some reason. |

The masses have spoken!
Several people listed picks for Oddballs, SSMVGD, and FBF, but not enough to make a tally worthwhile. For the rest of them, here's what garnered the most votes:
Frank Black B: Los Angeles (4) W: Every Time... (6)
Teenager Of the Year B: Speedy Marie (7) W: The Vanishing Spies/I Could Stay Here Forever (4)
Cult Of Ray: B: Men In Black/You Ain't Me (4) W: The Adventure and the Resolution (4)
Frank Black and the Catholics B: All My Ghosts (5) W: Six-sixty-six (6 - ooooh)
Pistolero B: Western Star (6) W: You're Such a Wire (6)
Dog In the Sand B: Bullet (4) W: Hermaphroditos (7)
Black Letter Days B: End of Miles (5) W: Black Letter Day/1826 (4)
Devil's Workshop B: Bartholomew (5) W: Are You Headed My Way? (7)
Show Me Your Tears B: Massif Central (6) W: Jaina Blues (4)
Honeycomb B: Selkie Bride/Sing For Joy (4) W: Violet (6)
Whether anyone else cares or not, having a running tally like this makes it more worthwhile in my eyes.
Nothing is ever something. |

I could never find a reason to ever consider any Frank Black song better, or worse, than another. My favorites change everyday. Least favorites become favorites during the next listen. I could never close the door on anything the man has written, or covered, for that matter.
Each lyric seems to be carefully inserted into equally purposeful music and arrangements. The songs play like abstract documentaries, tempting the listener to research their meanings and/or historic value. I doubt each one of us hasn't, at one time or another, been challenged by Frank's art. But, after time, the pieces fall into place. And that's what no other artist has ever done to me.
That was gay! Ha! Nevermind..... |

I respect the thoughtful presentation, but I personally have a hard time with this. The guy's got hundreds of songs, and you can't pick out any that stand out for better or worse?
One of the aspects of the man's work from which I derive the most pleasure is that much of it continues to challenge me after thousands of listens. There's so much of it that I adore without ever being able to explain it to myself, and sometimes it seems that what keeps me interested is that the intangibles offer up a sly grin here or there while remaining just unattainable enough to keep me hungry.

Gay. A multi-dimensional word on the move. I shouldn't use it to refer to something as dopey.
The next thing you know, the word gay will define something outstandingly good.
ex: "Leon's new Camaro is totally gay!" or, "Gee Donna, those breast implants are really gay lookin'. Can I touch em?" |
