It is official as of right now!
Frank Black will be covering Iggy Pop's 'Repo Man' for the American Laundromat Records release 'High School Reunion: a tribute to those great 80's films'. Frank is a HUGE Iggy fan, and LOVED the idea of covering Repo Man!
'High School Reunion' will be released this fall.

Now this I've got to hear.
Kristin Hersh covers Wave of Mutilation and The Bennies (i've heard their name round these parts) doing Weird Science.

Does anyone have the official tracklist? Funnily, I haven't seen any of the movies mentioned, except Repo Man last year. I did download Fast Times but I couldn't find subtitles in French. Are they worth seeing now?

If you register on the ALR forums, there is a tentative tracklist on there. Also, the Bennies cover of Weird Science kicks ass! And Kristin Hersh's Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) is amazing. |

That is such a badass underrated song with great lyrics, a great riff, great drive, and great everything, and Frank performing it is the best idea I've ever heard. Here's hoping he and whatever band he might be working with rocks it up on this. I WILL be owning this CD. |

Jason: it's going to get pushed back a bit... I don't think FB has even recorded the track yet, so I think we're looking at more of a November release date. |

Here is the official press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THURSDAY, September 15, 2005
FRANK BLACK COVERS IGGY POP! New York - AMERICAN LAUNDROMAT RECORDS (ALR) and FACE DOWN RECORDS (FDR) are proud to announce PIXIES frontman, and indie rock cult hero, Frank Black will cover IGGY POP’s “REPO MAN” for their upcoming tribute CD, HIGH SCHOOL REUNION (a tribute to those great 80’s films!). The tribute will also feature artists Matthew Sweet, John P. Strohm, Kristin Hersh, The Caulfield Sisters, and many more covering songs from some of the 80’s most popular teen films. The release date, which was originally scheduled for mid-October, has been pushed back to November 23rd to accommodate some of the artist’s busy schedules.
REPO MAN was the title track from the 1984 cult film of the same name which was written and directed by Alex Cox (Sid and Nancy), and starred a young Emilio Estevez as a punk-slacker who is apprenticed in the ways of repo men. The film had a heavily punk-influenced soundtrack, and because of its dark comedy and quirky characters, quickly earned a loyal cult following. The theme song ‘REPO MAN’ was written and performed by legendary rock ‘n’ roll wildman, Iggy Pop (The Stooges), who is widely accepted as the ‘Godfather of Punk’.
FRANK BLACK (Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV), who is also known as Black Francis, has earned a cult following equal to his own heroes; Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Lou Reed. Black is responsible for forming the PIXIES, one of the most well-regarded rock bands in history. The Pixies defined the late 80’s with their alt-country, punk-inspired sound, and influenced scores of alternative bands in the 90’s including Weezer, Radiohead, and Nirvana. As a solo artist Frank Black has released several critically acclaimed records, and continues to earn praise as one of the most important figures in American music.
“I’m a huge fan of the film Repo Man, and Frank Black was the only possible choice to cover the title track. I said early on that if he couldn’t do it, I’d cut the track from the record altogether. No one else would approach it with the same reverence the song deserves. I knew he was an Iggy Pop fan and I suspected he was a Repo Man fan like myself. Thankfully he loved the record concept and wanted to cover the song. I wasn’t sure how he was going to fit it in with his busy schedule, but he committed to make it work, and finished recording it this August at a friend’s studio in Connecticut.” Joe Spadaro, ALR founder & president.
HIGH SCHOOL REUNION will feature 20 cover tracks from some of the 80’s most popular teen films; including Sixteen Candles, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Anything, Pretty in Pink, Repo Man, The Breakfast Club, Valley Girl, Weird Science, and more.
The songs to appear (in alphabetical order) on HIGH SCHOOL REUNION are:
American Girl - Matthew Sweet Bring on the Dancing Horses - The Atomic Hep Cats Danke Schoen - The Wading Girl Don't You (Forget About Me) - AM I Go Crazy - PC Munoz If You Were Here - The Smarties In Your Eyes - Lori McKenna Little Bitch - Nova Social Love My Way - The Modifiers Melt With You - Underdog Million Miles Away - Dipsomaniacs Moving In Stereo - The Commons Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Caulfield Sisters Pretty In Pink - To be announced. Repo Man - Frank Black Somebody's Baby - John P. Strohm (The Blake Babies, Lemonheads) Turning Japanese - Blank Pages Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf) - Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses, 50 Foot Wave) Weird Science - The Bennies Within Your Reach - Bastards of Melody
AMERICAN LAUNDROMAT RECORDS is a New York based record label that has been compared to a young SubPop and 4AD. Since launching the label in April of 2004, ALR has managed to build an impressive roster of artists and release records that have been embraced by press and radio. ALR is also home to the legendary NYC garage-punk band The Atomic Hep Cats.
FACE DOWN RECORDS is a New Jersey based record label that is best known for releasing two critically acclaimed tribute CD’s: “Left of the Dial: a Pop Tribute to the Replacements”, and “Who's Not Forgotten” a tribute to The Who, which featured covers by such greats as ‘Guided By Voices’ and Pat Dinizio (The Smithereens). FDR is also homebase for the long standing NJ garage rock/power pop band Dipsomaniacs.

1.)Who are The Commons, and are they worthy of covering Moving in Stereo? 2.)Frank Black rules! 3.)wouldn't it be cool to hear him play The Passenger? 4.)"Hey, kid, do you wanna make fifty bucks?" "Fuck you, queer."

To Be Announced are an incredible band. I can't wait to hear their "Pretty in Pink".
What movie was "A Million Miles Away" in? (I'm assuming that's the Plimsouls song). |

Lisa Loeb is no longer involved in the project, but i am REALLY EXCITED about the band that will be recording the song. They are in the studio right now, and as long as all the legal stuff goes through, I will be announcing them soon.
And no, it's not the Pixies. |

Just noticed the Dresden Dolls will cover Pretty In Pink for the tribute CD. I'm not familiar with their work but I've heard some very good things about them. This is shaping up nicely.

The Pixies' Frank Black, Matthew Sweet, Throwing Muses' Kristin Hersh and more have contributed covers of '80s movie soundtrack tunes for High School Reunion: A Tribute to Those Great '80s Films, which is planned for a December 1 release. Hersh takes on the Pixies' "Wave of Mutilation (U.K. Surf)," which appeared in "Pump Up the Volume"; Black offers his rendition of Iggy Pop's "Repo Man," from the film of the same name; and Sweet tackles Tom Petty's "American Girl," from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."
