So I recently moved to Boston for law school but have yet to really discover the city. Can anyone suggest cool areas, stores, clubs, things to see and the like? Maybe local Pixies landmarks?

http://boston.metblogs.com

I have been here for 10 years, not counting the summers I spent here when I was growing up. Personally I love Harvard Square for people watching and shopping, etc. Also some good clubs down in the Harvard/Central area like Middle East and TT the Bears to see live music. Boston is pretty small in comparison to other cities (don't know where you are from) and it is pretty easy to take a good walk around. I like the Mass Ave walk from Central, over the bridge to Back Bay and then down Newbury Street to Boston Common and the Downtown Crossing area. You would see a lot and get a CITY idea if you did that one day.

If you have more specific questions, let me know. Will try to help out! You can always email me too, if you want.

Dress up as Indians and throw tea in the harbor?

Where in Boston do you go to school and live? What parts of the city are you familiar with already? Tell me and I'll make my humble suggestions about places you don't already know.

The Museum of Science is always a blast, and there's a good Indian food restaurant around the corner from the Middle East Club. Mmmm.
Don't forget to ride the Swan Boats!
I like hanging out in Brookline a lot, and Brookline Booksmith is a cool shop that brings in good authors a couple times a week ( http://brooklinebooksmith.com/Events/Brookline2005/MainEvent.html )
Other than that, ride the T, look at the junkies in the park, laugh at the suckers visiting Quincy Market.

I'm going to BU Law and live pretty close to the campus, right by Fenway park. I've found a couple of neat stores and stuff so far, but not near enough. I'd appreciate all suggestions, humble or otherwise.

Harvard Ave. near the intersections of Comm. Ave. and Brighton Ave. is cool. Central Sq. in Cambridge, Harvard Sq. Our House on Comm. Ave.

I'm sure all the 1L's at BU will figure out where to hang out. You should be too busy studying anyway.

I've lived in Boston my whole life, but have two kids and never get out anymore, so I guess I don't know what's going on anymore.

I almost went to BU Law. Ended up going to BC instead. Odd building BU Law is. It's like one room wide and 20 stories tall. More like a tower.

It prides itself on being the most phallic law school in the country.

My brother went to BC, my cousin went to BU and they both insist that Michael Stipe (who briefly attended BU) sings "Don't get caught in Warren Towers" in "It's the end of the world."

Anyway...all these relatives in Boston and I still haven't made a single recommendation. Let me think and I'll get back to you.

I can't find anything about Stipe and BU using google. I know he ended up at U of GA, obviously. Maybe kitty knows.

I'm sorry. Kitty? The one in school in England? Sorry.

He was there briefly in the early 80s, when I was in school in New England.

Sorry, playboy.com says differently. He moved to Athens in the late 70s and went to UGA.

"Stipe, the son of a military man, grew up on army bases around the U.S. and Europe before moving to Athens in the late '70s to study art at the University of Georgia. There, he met budding guitarist Peter Buck, who was a clerk at Stipe's favorite record store. The two bonded over a love of early punk and were soon playing cover songs around town with bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry under the gloriously stupid moniker Twisted Kites."

So someone does read Playboy for the articles!

Still, I am correct. He attended some or all of his freshman year.

And isn't this really helping soundofataris?

Back to helping our fellow forumite.

Seriously. Do this: walk from BU down the leafy middle of Comm Ave to the Common and do the swan boat thingie, like someone suggested already. Then go to the Ritz and get drunk in a high style, like Anne Sexton and Maxine Kunin and Robert Lowell used to. Then hoof it to Newbury Street and check out Newbury Comics.

Well, Fenway will be amusing for approximately an afternoon or however long you are there. If you are in that area, you can also take some good walks over to the River and down into Back Bay. And come over to my neighborhood in Jamaica Plain, it's very fun.

You can also take a tour of Fenway.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/bos/ballpark/tour.jsp

Or see a dorm building that Michael Stipe never lived in.

A freshman dorm building. Where a freshman could be so miserable that he would drop out and then mention said building in a song.

Thank you for proving my point, dar!

I went there once and found it to be pretty goddamn expensive. New York was cheaper if you can believe that. Fenway Park was awesome though, their T-car system was fascinating to me for some reason. Maybe it was because I was high a lot of the time I was there.
