ok. so i planted two grapevines in my backyard and now they're freakin' loaded with grapes and I need to do somethin. soon.
i think the grapes my be concord but i'm not sure...i'll check when the light comes back on outside and edit.
so, how can i make some wine? i've read some rather involved processes online...is there an easy, damned-near foolproof if possible, way i can make a tasty beverage? this doesn't need to be vintage 05 bottles...just stuff that won't make me go blind or eat through the varnish on my kitchen table...
thanks. |

Right here there are some places where you can bring your grapes and they do it for you or exchange it for its weight in wine. I learned the process some time ago, but never did it. It isn't as easy as it sounds.
But one thing that I remember is that you need at least 100 Kg. (don't know it in pounds) to make the chemical process start by itself. It's maybe too much for two plants.

We used to "help" make "wine" when I was a kid, my godfather had a huge vine in the back garden, it was bloody horrible stuff though, the best bit about the whole deal was the treading. Squishy. |

What did the grape do when someone stepped on it?
It let out a little wine. |

Good luck toba. We haven't had much luck in the wine dept., but mostly because there was a problem with the corks - over 6 months' waiting and then found out they were poor quality corks = eww, nasty oxidized wine = nasty vinegar. Just try not to squeeze the grapes too hard so that the skins, and particularly the seeds, don't get smashed as well - the tannins in em will make your wine really astringent (I think that's the word anyway).
Here is a site that might help, use your own judgement I guess: http://ingeb.org/junk/wine.html
A cousin of SpudBoy's used to make bucket wine with her husband and just set aside in a warm dark place. Grape, elderberry, rhubarb, whatever...Hillbilly wine. Not the best but it'll get ya drunk. HIs pappaw used to make it too -we went through the cellar of his house after he passed and found a bunch of dusty bottles and jugs, no idea how old they were, but it was actually pretty good stuff, considering. I will say the most important thing is keeping your tools and surfaces clean. Keep the outside air out too. If you don't want to use bleach, which can leave a yucky taste even after lots of rinsing, you can use sulfites -if you have a beer/wine-making shop in your town they will help you out in spades. It seems like the folks those places are always eager to share all they know.
I think Dean has made wine, maybe the other forum Greeks/Italians might have some pointers?
Oh, also, if those are Concord grapes you have, better just to make juice or eat em, cause they don't have the right chemical structure for wine -too mild. You'll need a wine varietal to get what you want. (then again, if you age it for a loooong time -about 2 years- it might be decent.) |
