I thought it was about time they had their own thread, seeing as there are a few fans on here. And it may as well be now seeing as their new album, Twin Cinema' is out on Monday (I can tell you it's another cracker).

I can think of no band in the history of music that has created so many damn good pop songs. And their vocals are just sublime (especially Neko Case's).

Seriously, this band are without doubt one of my favourite of all time (and NME don't even rate them Steve ; )). I think it's criminal that they are not absolutely HUUUUUUUGE!

So come on fellow Porno fans, profess your love!

I LOVE the Pornos! Their songs are just great fucking pop songs--fun, loud, and catchy, just like any good pop song should be. I almost forgot about the new album. So it comes out next week? I'll probably have to wait a little while to get it since I'm saving my money for a trip to LA in a couple of weeks, but I'm looking forward to it. I also loved Carl's solo album. That had some really great songs on it!

Hey HPM, I saw your thread, recognized the name of the band, read the posts here, and I'll be there, October 18th. Sounds like it will be a good one. I hadn't heard of this band, I don't listen to the radio.

http://www.mercylounge.com/live_music

"Tues 10/18 - The New Pornographers (feat: Neko Case) with Destroyer and Immaculate Machine 8:30 show $15 18 & up

The New Pornographers are a super-group, as deserving of the tag as Vancouver — or any city across the land — is likely to produce. Take a great singer, peerless songwriter and stunning studio arranger in Carl Newman, and remove him from the complex, overwrought easy listening environment of his band, Zumpano. Add to it Dan Bejar, a/k/a Destroyer, a musician-about-town and brilliant songwriter in his own right, whose own work has established him as a reluctant hero, an underground underdog actually worthy of the spotlight he’s anxious to shun. Add a third singer in the distinct pipes of Mint’s sonic bombshell, Neko Case; a fourth voice takes the form of Limblifter drummer Kurt Dahle, who contributes from behind the kit to the backing chorus. Engineer, bassist, member of Nardwuar’s The Evaporators and Thee Goblins John Collins and keyboardist Blaine Thurier round out the line-up."

Cool OldMan, glad you are gonna give them a go. They could use more fans.

You guys are sooooo lucky for being able to see them live. There are strong rumours of a European tour on their forum but I will not hold my breath.

Brian, they're playing the Bowery Ballroom on Sept. 15, and they've got a two-night engagement in October at Webster Hall.

Mass Romantic is great. "Letter From An Occupant" is probably one of my favorite songs ever. The Electric Version is cool, too, but not quite as good. I didn't know they had a new album coming out. I'll have to check that out.

My girlfriend and I should be seeing them live in October, I think.

Just bought Electric Version today without hearing it. Got one of those euphoric feelings as I drove across town when "The Laws Have Changed" came on and I heard Neko's voice. Good stuff.

Great songs: (none of their songs are very difficult to get into since they're pretty much straight-forward pop songs--with the exception of a few songs from Carl's solo album--but here are some that you would probably enjoy a lot)

"The Electric Version"
"From Blown Speakers"
"The Laws Have Changed"
"All For Swinging You Around"
"Mass Romantic"
"The Fake Headlines"
"The Body Says No"
and from Carl's solo album, all of the songs are great, but my personal favourite is "On the Table."

As for the name, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) it came about because of something a radio evangelist said about rock music being the "new pornography," therefore since they play rock music they are the "New Pornographers."

Actually, Carl came up with the name first, and then heard about Jimmy Swaggart's book.

From http://www.mintrecs.com/bands/speak/pornographers/pornographers.html :

“I didn’t find out until recently that it actually had some kind of meaning,” he admits. “[Televangelist] Jimmy Swaggart wrote a book called Music: The New Pornography. Holy shit, it fits so perfectly. Ever since, I tell people ‘Jimmy Swaggart said music was the new pornography. The New Pornographers are merely musicians.’ It’s completely innocent, and pooh-poohs people who say ‘what an offensive name you have.’”
