Lyrics

Violet

Violet, Violet
Violet's the color for me
Halfway between blood and the sky
Everything I want to see

Violet, Violet
Violet's the chakra for me
in the key of B at the top of her head
Seeking divinity

On my way to another place
I stop long enough to breathe

Violet, Violet
Violet's the flower for me
the ancient Greek symbol of love
Flower of fertility
Flower of fertility

This one takes a lot of cues from Leonard Cohen too, even though it's a very personal song. Violet, my girlfriend, suggested putting this one right before the last track, to have a little calm before the storm

you know the drill!

Frank, when asked by The Clash if Violet cried when she first heard the song Violet:

"Um, I don't know.  I think she might have cried when she heard the other song that I'm  singing with my ex-wife. Ha ha ha. But cried for different reasons."

------

Violet was the original flower for Valentine's Day, before the rose.

In Ancient Greece, the violet was both a symbol of love and fertility (they used it in love potions) and the symbol of the city-state of Athens.

According to several gay and lesbian online sources, violet has been used throughout history to represent same-sex love, especially lesbianism. Sappho wrote poetry describing herself and her lover wearing tiaras of violets. Violets were worn in 16th century England by men and women who did not plan to marry.

It's the one song I think Frank should have left off the record. It really sounds like something he should have saved for late night serenading of Violet in their living room or something. A little sappy for my taste.

I totally agree. "Flower of fer-tee-lee-tee?" ...come on.

...where the Ballyhoos and the Tritons are.

No, my favorite is "Key of B..." Ha! Oh well, it takes guts to do something like that-I can't knock the man. Maybe we should take Billy Joel's advice and "Leave a tender moment alone".

Violet's the Chakra for me

The word comes from the Sanskrit cakra meaning "wheel, circle", and sometimes also referring to the "wheel of life". The pronunciation of this word can be approximated in English by chuhkruh, with ch as in chart and both instances of a as in yoga (the commonly found pronunciation shockrah is incorrect).

The seven main chakras are described as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is associated with a certain color, multiple specific functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, and other distinguishing characteristics.

Chakra - The Crown
Colour - Violet
Primary Function - connection to the divine
Element - Space

Violet = a nice counter-point to Strange Goodbye.
ie. they both could be deleted from Honeycomb and you'd be left with a nice 12-tracker.

Having said all that, I do not think Violet is that bad a song, I do like it.
