Good point: Two Step is a stonkin' marvellous song, without argument or doubt. One of the finest tracks on one of the finest albums of its time, its hallowed place in the Throwing Muses canon virtually guarantees its place in the list of alltime greats, and it certainly graces any compilation or mix CD it would find itself on.

Benji, you're brilliant you are.
You begin saving the world by saving one person at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics |

This is a fantastic thread. Excellent work Nic.
For Throwing Muses, I would start with Limbo as I did. Worked for me.
For Sleater-Kinney, I would start with 'All Hands On The Bad One' or 'One Beat'. For my sins, I still haven't heard The Woods (except one track which rocked like a MOFO)
Where do I start with Camper Van Beethoven? I have about ten tracks from various stages of their career I think.

I would say their debut, Mass Romantic, if pushed. You really can't go wrong with any of them though. All great.

For CVB, I'd say to start with Telephone Free Landslide Victory (their first one). I think someone else (Broken Face?) gave the same advice in the CD swap thread, and I agree.
And yeah, I'd say Mass Romantic for the New Pornographers, too.
So basically, all I'm doing in this post is agreeing. It's just a much lengthier way of saying "me too."

Not that I can think of offhand, but maybe something will come to me in the near future. Just keep the thread going, so I can remember to ask when it's relevant.

Where do I start with Donovan? I like every song I know by him (Hurdy Gurdy Man, Mellow Yellow, Sunshine Superman, Sleep, and now Atlantis).

My two cents: for Throwing Muses my favorite is House Tornado and after that the debut album, but Real Ramona might be the most representative and a very good album. The cheeseman is right about Hips and Makers.
for New Pornographers I haven't heard the new album and I've only had Mass Romantic for a couple of months, but I think Electric Version is the place to start. To me it has more hooks than Mass Romantic. More likely to make you fall in love with the band.

songbook is the super furry animals singles collection (from the first six albums) so is quite broad, I think rings around the world tends to be the best appreciated of the albums, but if you want to be chronological I think fuzzy logic is darn good.
I quite like this description from amazon Super Furry Animals are not a band for the frail hearted. Sure, they might have an adorable name and endearingly shaggy manes. Some of their songs even start out sounding a little bit soft and gentle like Coldplay. But then singer Ghruff Rhys throws on an astronaut helmet, starts waving around a light sabre (literally) and soon the whole thing goes ballistic. The psychedelic Welsh quintet has made a career of taking perfectly good pop songs and inverting them violins, horns and magic dust
it's absolutely fair enough. |

hehe I've put songbook on now and it's good because, it's the SFA, but because it's all singles there's some cracking album tracks missing so it'd be unwise to only have this one imo.
I find it hard to pick one you see, I like Guerilla and Radiator a lot too, but giving you four albums as a place to start may not be a helpful thing. |

Many, if not all, of his early/mid-sixties albums have recently been remastered. they're pretty good. if you're looking for some kind of compilation, the tracklisting (i don't have this particular one--just some of the albums you mentioned above) of the troubadour looks ok. anything with Sunshine Superman, H-G Man, etc...I've not heard much from his recent album but he seems to like it if you look at his celeb.playlist on iTunes. :)
(did you know John Paul Jones played & arranged on some of his tracks? that guy is amazing...not to derail your donovan thread but check out JPJ's website and look at his bio to see how many cool people he's arranged for/played with/produced. wow.)
anyway go listen to the Sunshine Superman album. FB mentioned Donovan in some interview i heard once. "one of the stories i heard about you is that one of the first music you were turned on to was Mellow Yellow" oh yeah, absolutely. i love donovan
edit. and i totally forgot that he did 'atlantis' that FB covered on honeycomb. there ya go. |

I guess it's slightly on track: can anyone recommend me a good compilation for really downbeat classic soul. I'm talking like the original Dark End Of The Street, Ain't No Sunshine, that sort of thing. If not a compilation, any recommendations in the area would be good. Ta!

Where do I start with Queens Of The Stone Age? I saw them yesterday before the Pixies and they were really good.
Where do I start with the Saints? I only know 1 song by them (Know Yr Product) and it's great.

I only have the Complete Studio Recordings, called 'Wild About You: 1976-1978'. That's definitely worth getting, a two-disc set. Whatever you get, make sure it contains '(I'm) Stranded', 'Demolition Girl', 'This Perfect Day' and some of the covers they did. EDIT: sorry, that referred to the Saints.

For QOTSA I think that their debut, self titled album is essential stuff along with Songs For The Deaf.

I honestly found Electric Version a bit disappointing after Mass Romantic. I mean, it's a fun album, but the songs all kind of blend together. I guess that's not necessarily bad if they're all good songs, but I prefer a little more variety, I guess.
That doesn't necessarily mean TEV is a bad place to start, though, I suppose.

Reviving the thread. The question about Can remains unanswered and I'm curious about them too.
Where do I start with Arthur Russell? I really have to get into this guy, he's mentioned so many times among other artists I love.
