Sleater-Kinney? They've been mentioned far too many times in the top five of the year thread to ignore and I don't think I've ever conciously heard them. I'm curious.

Please turn this into a wealth of where to start questions with (and I hope there will be as many answers) about bands you've always been curious about.

Dig Me Out or All Hands on the Band One. Both excellent.

Where do I start with Roxy Music? Cause I don't know.

Cheers for that soundofataris - how would you describe them or compare them to though?

Sorry no idea where to start with Roxy Music - good one though. The one track I would recommend listening to by them is In Every Dream Home A Hearteache. I find it mindblowing.

As for Sleater-Kinney, I started with The Hot Rock and it made me the happiest man on Earth. More or less.

Where should I start with FB? Is it true that everything he recorded between 1995 and 2000 is pure crap?

I started with One Beat. I think it's their best record. I can't really get into their other stuff, other than the Woods, which rules.

I would recommend the first three records of Roxy (the first two are with Brian Eno) : three masterpieces:

- Roxy Music
- For Your Pleasure
- Stranded

where should I start with The Modern Lovers?

So not a single one of you has suggested the same album. You're not making it easy are you?

I've only heard The Woods on the office stereo. Wasn't overly impressed, but then I'm hard to please.

I have to agree. Surfer Rosa I would start with "The Woods" too...It is absolutely one of my favorites for the year. Also, I think it is their finest work.

I second cassandra's choice about Roxy Music. Although I took the opposite path and started with Avalon, which is VERY far from their early sound. I'd say get one of the first 3 and the last one (Avalon), then pick the albums in between at random.

Forgot to say: Nic, that's one of my favorite threads of the last months.

Where do I start with 50 Foot Wave? I downloaded Golden Ocean, is that ok? Who are they anyway?

Really? Who are they?

50 Foot Wave is Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses fame, but much rockier. The album is excellent, although you should certainly also get the debut mini: some songs are duplicates, but the ones you don't have are worth getting.

That's all there is by them at the moment, but catch them live if you can.

Yeah, for some reason I've never heard a note of the Throwing Muses or Kristin Hersh solo.

Then you also need TM's 'Real Ramona' and KH's 'Hips & Makers'.

I played the Throwing Muses self-titled years ago and got bored.

But it was when I was trying to cure my Pixies addiction, so maybe I should give them another chance.

Sleater-Kinney: I'd begin with The Hot Rock and/or Dig Me Out.
As for Throwing Muses... Xavi, yes, you should give it another chance (I assume you mean the 2003 album).
Denis, what they said: definitely try The Real Ramona, Hips & Makers, and Golden Ocean.

It wasn't the 2003 album, because it was before 2003. I think it's the debut album. I've googled it.

But, you know, after the Pixies everything sounded weak to me.

Oh. Well, yes, Throwing Muses' debut album can be a bit difficult to get into. But the band is definitely worth another try. Then you can move on to 50 Foot Wave.

You might even find that they make everything else sound bland :)
