I quit drinking alcohol and coffee to quit smoking. That was two years ago, I have an espresso now and then and don't feel the urge to smoke that used to be part-and-parcel of coffee-drinking (plus not so frequent because Spanish coffee is at best just bad). One thing happened when I first quit: my friends would say How did you do that without lapsing or even avoiding social situations with alcohol, it's like you just turned off a tap! and I'd say something smug like Well you know the mind is a most powerful thing...and on my way home I'd buy a bar of chocolate and pretty much eat the wrapper with it.

Ha! No...lol! Just practicing perspective. I do know, however, remig, nicotine gum is just as bad. It's the nicotine we're all fighting. I've failed many times quitting...but I do know that ultimately it MUST be cold turkey. And it MUST be done without any help-you-through-it-chemical replacement aids. Nicotine is nicotine...gum, cigs, whatever. And the alcohol thing still gets a chuckle out of me. If I can drink for a week straight, drink myself into a stupor, and NOT resort to smoking, then I'm cured! Maybe one can do it...I don't know. But one may down the line find something else to get warped on in an attempt to kick the alcohol.

Congrats Owen!

TRANSMARINE & remig you can do it. When you are ready, KOS, you can do it too.

I "quit" in 2003, but it will be a year in June since I have even snuck one.

The timing of this thread resurfacing coincides with a realization I had last weekend. I realized that it's been a few months since I have had a craving and having a smoke turns me off more than it turns me on. It was as long hard road (the very hardest road I have ever had), but I am finally where I want to be.

For me, it meant quitting drinking all together. That was tough to give up, too.

So my advice is you all can do it. If you relapse, you relapse, just keep on trying to quit and eventually it will work. I can't count how many times I tried quitting...

I guess what I am saying is that it's worth it to quit smoking...please feel free to email me outside of this forum and I would love to cheer you on or be a place where you can vent!

I hope that I can find the will power to muster up quit soon. The fact that we are the same age scares me reading your comment about what the doctor said to you. All of my friends, even the smokers, are absolutly shocked in my cigarette consumption 3+ packs a day. And when I drink....look out, I can hardly breathe the next morning. I need to quit and hope that I can get it together soon. Thanks for the wake up call!

Maybe you should look into the drinking part, too. Everyone who smokes knows that drinks are the biggest enabler. They are hand in hand for many people. Perhaps kicking both to the curb is the answer. Just a thought. Not trying to sound judgemental or condescending.

I don't know if that'd be possible...I mean Vodka is my best friend and I plan to be buried with a bottle of Grey Goose, Shakers, And Hangar One. Vodka on the rocks is my lifeblood. Without it, I would live a miserable life...

It will be 2 years since i quit on july 10, 2008. i haven't even sneaked any so i think that is a key point in quitting. it was hard. i had to get it in my mind and DECIDE i was going to be a nonsmoker.

I quit after seeing the movie The Insider. Didn't like the idea I was being taken for a ride by a bunch of lying dwarves. It was much easier than everyone makes out. We just love to moan I guess.

I feel how many people have a problem quitting is that they don't really want to quit when they do and they sabotage it on themselves and feel bad about not being able to leave it when deepdown they didn`t feel it was their time to stop anyway. So I figure until you do really want to quit (which I'd put as feeling a total lack of resonance with a cigarette as opposed to the nagging sense of obligation), smoke meditatively and concentratedly on the cigarette and with love, and if you drop the habit you drop the habit; if you don't, why beat yourself up for doing something you didn't want to do?

The problem with a chemical dependency is that it overrides your logical thinking, and that's what sabotages many efforts to quit smoking. I'm not sure it's so simple as people not *really* wanting to quit.

I never understood how someone can say they've quit 'again'. Doesn't that just mean they never actually quit?

Well, when you 'quit' a job, do you never seek employment again? When you 'quit' a relationship, do you never have another one? When you 'quit' thinking about something, do you never have another thought? Oh forget it. I quit.

Yes you would seek employment, but that's like saying "I've quit smoking (original job) but I am becoming an alcoholic (further employment)". It's two different things. You've still quit smoking, unless you go back to your 'old job'. Sort of.

Does that make sense? To anybody?

Probably not. Oh well.

i think it still counts as quitting if it's been a considerable length of time, i.e. years.
it still counts as time spent not killing themselves

Now that the smoking ban has arrived here in England it's given me extra insentive to quit. Last time I tried I went onto herbal tobacco which was ok at first but it's kind of like smoking meusli.

We've had the smoking ban over here for a couple of years, and people seem to have gotten used to it. I used to hate the stink of smoke off your clothes after a night out. Being an asthmatic non-smoker, I suppose I'm biased, but it seems that there are even some smokers who feel that it's reasonable enough.

Of all the people i know who smoke, non even thought about quitting when the ban came in. I’m sure people have quit though because of it
Smoking area in pubs have become so bizarre here (IMO) Pubs and nite clubs really experiment with the idea of inside/outside.
There's a place i go to where they have knocked two walls out of a first floor room and replaced them with a cage like structure. You're basically standing in a two walled room. Other places just took out the windows and put in bars instead.
