I used to smoke.
For quite a few years now its just after a few wobbly pops with the girls.
Its about the only thing that keeps me quit the rest of the time,
knowing that I can still have one or two at those times.
(Oh and pregnancy and children was good motivation too.)

But I hate when people say its a bad habit, you have a bad habit.
Bullshit! A habit is something like biting your fingernails.
A bad habit does not involve addictive chemicals.
Its a chemical dependency, a drug addiction if you will.
But the gov't can't say that, they make too much money off the sales of tobacco.
Here a pack costs about $10. I bet it takes less that a buck to manufacture. And its completely retarded that pot is not legal, it isn't even habit forming (physically).
Obviously the tobacco companies can't say it, they're too busy rolling in the bucks and making cherry skoal to recruit a new replacement generation of those addicted to nicotine. So they make the smoker feel like a pathetic loser whose will is extremely weak.
The truth is that you've been putting this substance into your body at regular intervals for years. Its become accustomed to that. Nicotine's effect wears off in about an hour and then you're left to feed that little monster. You actually don't feel more relaxed, you just feel back to normal after smoking. It is a cycle that will last forever. Unless YOU choose to stop putting it in your body.
And that is why the gum and patches just prolong your withdrawal period.

__________
Don't believe the hype.

I'm raising a cynical eyebrow and sucking on my cancer stick here.

Everyone knows smoking looks cool. And goes well with coffee. And looks cool.

Whatever happened with this, Transmarine? Did you stay quit? I quit on Halloween 1997, and then didn't have one for eight years, then slipped up last December and had three at a gay bar one night, then managed to not have another since.

About a month or two ago, I smoked my first cigarette in several months. It made me nauseous and dizzy. And I was happy about that (even though I was nauseous and dizzy). It said to me that I'm over the addiction and my system is now rejecting rather than welcoming the cigarettes.

The best quitting advice I can give is to make quitting smoking part of a larger overall health regimen. It worked for me. I turned 30 last month and this year has been one of increasing health conciousness because i want to stay looking and feeling good as long as I can. I want to be one of those people who's 40, but looks 25. Smoking for me means premature wrinkling (Smoker's Face is what some call it). When I first decided to quit, I would just think of that everytime I got a craving for a smoke and it helped me to resist.

The cravings do go away. You just have to give it some time. For me, I think it took about two weeks.

That's funny. Your having your first cigarette in months tells me you're NOT over your addiction. Call me crazy. As for the cravings going away in two weeks -- you're dead on about that. I bet I've quit smoking 50 times in my life, and it's that first two weeks that are the real bitch. I'm no scientist, but that must be how long it takes for the nicotine to completely clear your system.

Fair enough. I guess I'm the one who said, a few comments ago, that I quit and then had some a few years later -- and I am certainly over my own addiciton.

I've quit smoking twice. First in 2001 (when I'd been smoking for about four years), and I only quit then because, as a result of some bad decisions, I was the most broke I've ever been in my life for about four months. Quitting then was pretty easy. Even with the money stress, I was more concerned about eating and not becoming homeless than smoking. When things got better, I didn't even think about smoking again and I didn't smoke for four years.

October 2005, I take two friends into my home for a few months. Both are smokers. I smoke a few with them around Thanksgiving just for the hell of it ("Wow, I feel like I'm 22 again") and then I end up smoking regularly again and feeling STUPID for it.

May 2006: With my 30th birthday coming up, I resolve to quit smoking for good, along with adopting healthier habits overall. It was a struggle and I fell off the wagon a few times, but by about June, i got serious and really stopped.

September 2006: I've done well keeping up with my healthier living habits and, physically, I feel great. One night, I bum a cigarette off someone. Maybe there are reasons for why I did it that I'm in denial about (or maybe not, I don't know), but I sort of wanted to test myself. The cigarette was "my brand" (Camel Lights) and everything. And the experience was so bad, I felt so ill from it, and it so clashed with how I live now that I came away NOT wanting another cigarette again (rather than wanting more, like the first time I resumed smoking).

Funny you say this, I was totally opposed to the idea of cigarettes and smoking up until I started dreaming about it. I have no idea why because none of my family smoked and it was a pretty big taboo (I always knew that if my parents caught me smoking pot everything would be cool...but cigarettes would be the end of the world) and only a few friends did. Anyway I had a series of dreams that eventually led to me trying smoking. Although I've never really considered myself a smoker (I go in and out of smoking but never really have felt that I was trying to quit or smoke regularly) it seems to have stopped any dreams...

congrats to all quitters.

dec 1st will be two years cold turkey for me.

i smoked for about 20 years and i've never been more done with anything in my life.

what worked for me is cultivating and remembering all of my negative smoking experiences and using them to negate the "battle" that some people think they are having with themselves over "cravings".

do that.
it helps.
one day not smoking is one day not stinking, having green teeth, breaking into a cough when you laugh and being controlled by one more huge corporation.

i'm stupid.
maybe thats why it was easy to quit.

but really, you just grow up about it and stop.
learn to give up.

i jumped in at the end of a mix and begged for copies of all the discs. brokenface (being the serious media hound he is) hooked me up for a copy of a boxed set i have (left of the dial).

Apl's was the best - three discs. I spaced it at a party somewhere or it was lifted.

but yeah - it was the one with Ace Of Spades and Timorous Me (seeing Ted Leo tonight, btw in louisville) and Johnny Too Bad and all kinds of gems.

I’ve smoked for about thirty years. Ten years into it I fell in love and stopped for two years, then breakup and smoking again. I’m amused that those, over the past couple centuries, who endure some prolonged ordeal such as being lost in the wilds or some other subjugation, so often emerge asking for a cigarette, after a drink of water and before a meal.

I quitted smoking one week ago.
I wasn't physical addiction, but the other one, the hard one, the psychological addiction.

It ain't easy to stop when each time you feel happiness isn't complete without a cigarette.

Congrats! I have tried and tried to quit smoking but to no avail. The longest I have ever gone is 5 weeks and as soon as I have a drink, they become my old friends again. I hope that I can find the will power to muster up quit soon. The fact that we are the same age scares me reading your comment about what the doctor said to you. All of my friends, even the smokers, are absolutly shocked in my cigarette consumption 3+ packs a day. And when I drink....look out, I can hardly breathe the next morning. I need to quit and hope that I can get it together soon. Thanks for the wake up call!

Maybe you should look into the drinking part, too. Everyone who smokes knows that drinks are the biggest enabler. They are hand in hand for many people. Perhaps kicking both to the curb is the answer. Just a thought. Not trying to sound judgemental or condescending.

ahah I've been drinking every night the first whole weekend, and it was hard not to smoke before the fourth glass, after, it didn't bothered me, just taking a nicotine gum from time to time.
