It has now been three weeks. Yay. In fact, I have no desire for one. Partly because I have been suffering from bronchitis during this time. Anyway, I found out from the doctor that my lungs are not in the best of condition, and if I continue to smoke, I may develop emphysema (sp?) in as little as 2 - 5 years. This didn't surprise me as heavy smoking is common on both sides of my family...and most have died during their early forties of emphysema and/or lung cancer. I will be 34 in a week. Yikes. I was told the damaged lining will regenerate but it will take years, so...I have decided to quit while I'm sorta ahead. Anyone else want to join me? Come on! Someone quit with me!

Congratulations Transmarine!!! That is awesome!

Quitting smoking has been quite difficult for me. I basically quit two years ago in January, but I continue to smoke here and there. I smoked about 4 cigs this weekend (after hosting a baby-shower for my sister-in-law who is quite high-maintanence)...and of course my husband and I have a few whenever we go to concerts which is only a handfull a year....but I would rather be an absolute non-smoker. I used the nicotine lozenges to stop...and I admit I still carry them with me at all times. I feel like I am the worse half-ass quitter of smoking.

Sounds like you are doing excellently...what (if any) methods did you use to help you quit?

I just quit. Then I got extremely sick, which helped a lot. Then the doctor told me the slightly worrisome news. I wish I never began in the first place (I was 10), but I can't worry about that now, right? It would be useless. So what I plan to do is eat right, sleep right, get back into rigorous excersize, and just be positive. If I get any extreme cravings, I'll have my second favorite vice...wait, make it my third (second is whiskey, and that would be a bad replacement)...a grape soda and vanilla ice-cream float. Honestly, I'm so dead set on this, I know I'll be fine.

I've been back home at my parents for the past month or 2, just had a small operation so i've not been on the cigarettes for 3 weeks now too. The problem is, im turning into a fatty and a coffee fiend!

As soon as I head back to my own place, i know i'll want to smoke...and though it might help for the lessening of my appetite (poverty helps too!), i want to stop for my health. Ah well, will power and exercise eh!

Transmarine, that is great news. Congrats! It's so tough but it sounds like you're past the hard stuff. My advise ... try not sneaking one hear or there for as long as you can stand it. it's the easiest way to start up again.

Thank you all for the encouragement and good thoughts. It really helps me feel good. Even though I seem to be spared bad withdrawls by whatever is looking out for me, I sometimes get that panicky feeling and the thoughts of "I'll never be able to smoke again!" which feels like the worst thing in the world. But the way I'm attacking it is, first off, letting it all run it's course; when I get those thoughts or feelings, I let it go full circle and recognize them instead of ignoring them or switching thoughts to ward them off. They're just thoughts and feelings...hauntings, really...and they can't hurt me, right? Then what I do, once they have left, is let myself know these are addictive thoughts my psyche has been colored by for years...I need to unbrainwash my mind and body and replace them with broader concepts that will take all merit away from said addictive thoughts and feelings. Then I need to pat myself on the back, and know I'm doing the right thing. Also, I have come to realize that a good way to cope is to treat this as a death...much like the loss of a close person, because some of the feelings are the same...like grieving. The more you move yourself to accept that you can never smoke again (never see the person again), the easier it gets day by day. I dunno. Maybe I'm thinking too much on it...but it's helping. Anyway, thanks again you all!

I have been smoke-less for nearly four months now. It's amazing to me, how easy it was. (Sorry, Transmarine, not meaning to say that to tick you off.) I figured it would be very difficult. I got sick one weekend, and I didn't feel like I could survive a cigarette, so I laid off until I got better. Then I just figured what the hell? I smoked for 10 years -- way longer than I said I would when I first started. (I was 15 when I started and 25 when I quit.) So I didn't smoke anymore. It took some getting used to at work -- I've been told I am psychologically addicted to cigs, rather than physically -- not going out to smoke with all my old puff-mates. But, I survived, and I rarely think about cigarettes now.

It seems strange to me...it felt like I was never going to quit. I am not counting myself as cured yet; my wife's dad smoked for years and would go for periods of about six or eight months without smoking and then start up again, but I am surprised I have done this well so far.

Congratulations!! It gets easier over time. The desire slowly slips away. So, have you had dreams about smoking? When I quit, I had these nightmares that I smoked and I would wake up feeling incredibly guilty.

Well done Brian. Quitting is the easy part, hard part is refraining from rubberbanding to the other extreme: the Antismoker. You know like 5 minutes after someone quits pointing at others lighting up, You know what you're doing to yourself?

I realize you were not being serious. I just imagined you didn't understand smokers so I made the computer analogy (I recalled you were pretty hard-core into computer science) to illustrate the concept of addiction.

be careful. it can sneak up on you.. i was quit for 2 years. am not now..

i'm gearing up for another quitting. you have to be ready and really want to quit. which is a bitch because i don't smoke that much, so i feel less gung ho to quit. but i would rather not smoke at all.. i smoke like 3 or 4 a day. (a lot) more when i drink . though i have noticed it's been going up a bit lately..

anyway, congrats Trans. i'll see you on the other side

luckily for you PixieSteve, you don't know the meaning of addiction. May you never know it... because it's stonger than Satan.

Congratulations! Maybe I should start smoking, so I can quit with you.

Nah, I don't think I can afford it.

I agree with PixieSteve that smoking (I won't say smokers) is really weird, but I think that's mostly just because I didn't grow up around it. My parents didn't smoke, and I never had friends who did (mostly because I didn't have very many friends, period).

Everytime I quit I replace it with another vice or addiction. All one vicious circle.

The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

People who get annoyed with smokers are the same people who annoy the world while being on their damn cell phones in the car/restaraunt/elevator/movies......etc. etc.
