Arcade Fire is great. they remind me of the Pixies not from their sound, but b/c they provided music listeners with something original and refreshing. lets face it, i can't think of many bands that sound like Arcade Fire....similar sentiment about the Pixies. that's how the two bands are comparable, IMO.

I don't like this band-there's dudes that hit each other on the heads with helmets on, and I think the singer reminds me a little too much of David Byrne.

well I don't think they're as good as the pixies. I don't think anyone else comes even CLOSE. Granted, A F is a super cool band... buy their cd and see them in concert!!!

For me the singer does not sing. He has the typicaly contemporary pseudo-expressive blank voice.
Kinda band who will soon have a larger audience for a couple of years... to release an album every 3 years... and end-up like what? Placebo?
Like Franz ferdinand the Byrne feeling is too obvious for me to take this band seriously.
(the only thing is that Byrne KNOWS how to sing well)
No, really, the songs I heard (from the album) have absolutely nothing particular.
It sounds like every single "corporate alternative music" band we find today like rotten easter eggs in the garden of boredom.

This is not the next big thing.

No really... The latest contemporary album I enjoyed was from a one-man-band living around Toulouse... I think.

I think that's a bit harsh to lump the Arcade Fire in with every other 'alternative' or 'indie' band.

Fair enough the media may hail them as messiahs, and I'll probably have no time for them when I see 15 year old emo kids with their t-shirts on in a couple of years if (and its a big if, if you ask me) they reach their so called saviour status. But, the Arcade Fire show a certain degree of originality and can cut it live, which is a lot more than many other bands.
But hey, pass on the name of that one-man-band person, I may need enlightened!

I grabbed this one on the word of an Art teacher at me school.

It's nice. It has an overwhelming feel of that modern rock, where they put the emotion of 'no emotion' into it. The vocals, the textures arn't genuine expressions, they're just kinda clowning around, and enjoy throwing two more chords onto a standard chord progression to sound different.
It's not revolutionary, as it seems like a jigsaw of influences, the Pixies a strong one, but I enjoy hearing new music which has some substance, harmonically, lyrically. Track two of Funeral is a ripper, reeks of Dead with the rhytmic guitar feel, but I like the willingness to play music without quaver or crotchet rhythm chords, ie QOTSA or Interpol.

I don't like this wave of whiney lead singers. It's a bit too repetitive, sounds like the same band is writing everything.
But Placebo? I actually have a lot of respect for that band, particularly in the portrayal of something heartfelt by the lead singer. Brian isn't nice to hear, but you do get what he's saying, and that is a rare thing in the sea of crap we have today.

"A litter of ways"? That doesn't sound very appealing.

Now, boobs, on the other hand...

i like the arcade fire & they impressed me live far more than they did on record.
have seen them at a festival (primavera) & at a gig they headlined (bristol) different sets both times, different set lists orders, they don't have the depth of material that Pixies do at the moment, but I like what I've seen so far

this is why events unerve me

I saw them again on Letterman last night, they just annoy me for some reason; I think I'm getting old. When the singer tried to non-chalantly flip the guitar around and play it's backside my friend and I looked at each other like," Nigga pleeeez!"

I find much mirth in the fact that all my Anglo Montrealer friends distance themselves from Arcade Fire, the biggest band to come out of their fabulous city. They're hilariously non-challant about Arcade Fire, and always eager to remind any and all that the lead singer's not even Canadian. Meanwhile, the band's lyrics and vibe and, especially, the "neighborhood" songs are so totally Montrealais it's not even funny.

Later this month I'm visiting a former college roommate who's an Anglo Montreal native, and she specifically asked me not to bring any Arcade Fire to her house. It's hilarious. I can't tell if it's because Regine is French Quebecquer or because the band's so successful or what.

This is nothing personal to you, Charles, because you're only (sortof) quoting the magazine. But...

quote:
"arcade fire" have a thing about them unseen since the pixies...something along those lines.

...is the most laughable thing I've read today.

The only song that grabs me so far is Haiti, and that's only because it reminds me of a song from "The Beach" soundtrack, and this brings back happy memories. Not original.

The recording of "Funeral" caught a lot of that ~live~ energy. It's almost like you're standing right in front of the band. Similar to "Surfer Rosa"

The only thing is that Surfer Rosa was released almost 20 years ago. Funeral would have loved to be released 20 years ago.

And Surfer Rosa did sound like the Pixies for at least one good reason...

I'm listening to Funeral at the moment, and I have to say it's probably the best thing I've heard since the first time I put on Doolittle. Arcade Fire and Pixies aren't really alike but they both seem to appeal to the same people and, musically have the same effect on me. I'm not sure what that is, but it's amazing.

I said "I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed"
"I like Lou Reed" she said sticking her tongue in my ear

Funeral is great in parts. Laika is an amazing song. Not as consistantly good as the pixies but good none the less. I can hear some pixies in em. some of the bass intro's and some of the furied playing is similar. but then again, they both use vocals and guitars and notes so they must be similar....
Ive hear they all use the bathroom too !!!

Little Black Francis,

I see that article rips Laika.... I can't but disagree... how about the whole eastern european feel u get from the song (Jet, not even similar), i agree, one weak line in it alright.... but the whole accordian has the eastern european cold snowy feel to it, lovily, and the violins, climb every 30 secs.. great stuff...
