I watched 'Brazil' in spanish, but I didn't understand anything.

'Abre los Ojos' - ('Open Your Eyes'???) was great too, but Cruise fucked it up. As everything he touches, actually.
'Blade Runner'
'Cinema Paradiso' - A cult movie, but I didn't like it.
'Metropolis'
'Det sjunde inseglet' - The Seventh Seal.

There are some great old french movies, but I don't remember the titles. Maybe the frenchies here have some clues.

Yeah, good choice rumours!

If you only see one cult movie, make it the aforementioned Harold and Maude. Hilarious and moving.

Kind hearts and coronets "i shot an arrow in the air and she fell down in leicester square" (i dont know why but love that line) alec guiness playing everyone

Following -christropher nolans film before batman, memento etc, low budget, but just as good if not better than his other films

Some like it hot....for the end line mainly-classic

goodbye lenin, really intersting funny film dealing with the end of communism and the falling of the berlin wall

Pi and requiem for a dream- by aranofski both beautiful, disturbing, amazing films

and any of the jack frost films- its a murderous snowman-what is there not to like!?!?!?

For the real amateurs, this masterpiece by Alexandro Jodorowsky. Please watch this film, it is unlike anything you watched before... Especially you, Americans!

Ha, That's a trilogy, no beaming swords and hairy monsters, but Joe Dallesandro and few other cute freaks....

Splendid, just as funny as the 3 previous ones and a really stunning performance by Candy Darling....

A lot of them have already been mentioned, but these are my recommendations,
some of which quite obvious:
-American Splendor
-Buffalo 66
-Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo
-Cidade de Deus
-Tape
-Easy Rider
-Goodfellas
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Don't doubt I've forgotten a few...

HEY!

You've got to watch:

-Dead Alive (Peter Jackson)

-Wild at Heart (David Lynch)

-Sid and Nancy (only if you're a sex pistols fan)

-Boys from Brazil (I haven't seen this, but it's about Dr. Mengele. Do you know who Dr. Mengele was?)

-2001: A space odyssey

-True Stories (the David Byrne movie!)

Pablo Picasso never got called an asshole.

How could I forget Man Bites Dog!, Thanks Joey Joe Jo, the most disturbingly brillant film I've ever seen. Boys from Brazil is great Misterwoe, very creepy! Harold and Maude has come up in so many threads I really have to see it,. I scanned this page in from an 70's film magazine I have, the poster always looked cool, now I have to see the film.
Carl! Martin Sheen is soooooo cool in Badlands, such a great film! I didn't realize it was semi-based in reality!

One of the very few contemporary films I found not bad at all... and catchy. (Though I would have stop the film before the "disaster" stops.

Anyone here seen Nekromantik? There's some unforgettable scenes in that, though you'll want to forget them.

Some others I don't remember seeing on this list:
Freaked
Gummo
Frankenhooker
Irreversible
Slacker
Kids
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Switchblade Sisters
Swinging Cheerleaders
Dolemite
Tromeo and Juliet

Let 'em riot. We're Sonic-fuckin'-Death Monkey.
