But if the cat messes around with the honeycomb, it'll get stung! Didn't it learn ANYTHING from Winnie-the-Pooh?
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

Came across this the other day in a local Nashville newspaper, "The Nashville Scene" (a small town Village Voice, if you will)
Figure it belongs here cause it's some of the 'Comb Cats and Sir Jon's getting some props and I'm sure a lot of phone calls therefrom.
http://www.nashvillescene.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?story=This_Week:Arts:Music--Back_to_the_Future
"...Having worked with both indie rock and classic R&B artists, Tiven could've led Hooks in any number of directions. After all, this is the guy who produced Alex Chilton's first solo album and Frank Black's recent Americana project, Honeycomb, as well as albums for B.B. King, Wilson Pickett and Don Covay...." "...On Godson of Soul, the guitarist-producer [Sir Jon Tiven] forms a core trio with his wife Sally Tiven on bass and Nashville veteran Billy Block on drums, backing Hooks with a stripped-down sound that weds finesse with fire. Guests include soul music luminaries like Steve Cropper, Bobby Womack and Memphis Horns leader Wayne Jackson, all of whom remain discreetly in the background. Tiven doesn't allow for showboating solos or overly complex arrangements, and he avoids most of the usual soul and blues clichés. His arrangements are packed with smart but terse flourishes, such as the offbeat piano counter-melody in "Black Nights, Blue Moons" or the record's subtle changes and constantly shifting textures..."
[by the way Jon, how 'bout an update on the Honeycomb showcase Sept. 10 at the Cannery Ballroom. I started a thread over in "Frank Black Live". Post it over there if you don't mind, and include which of the 'Comb Cats will accompany The Man. I see from the MercyLounge webpage that Dan Penn is playing at 8:30 prior the Honeycomb showcase at 12:30 a.m.]

Thanks for giving Ellis and me the love. The new Ellis Hooks album GODSON OF SOUL is getting four and fivestar reviews all around, and again I highly recommend it.
The Cannery Ballroom performance will be Frank solo acoustic, there will be no musicians accompanying him. I spoke with Dan and he's not aware of any gig, so that must be a mistake. Buddy Miller will be playing earlier that evening, but I doubt that the twain shall meet onstage although surprises are always possible.
By the way, Earl Drake---who mixed a good part of the record---wondered why his photo did not appear and would like it to sit with the Nashville cats and I think that would be entirely appropriate. If somebody could facilitate this, that would be helpful.
bye, Jon the Tiven |

Well, I'm sure it'll be good but I'm glad I didn't make big plans to go 2000 miles for a solo show! Thanks for checking in Mr. T! |

Hey Jon the love is well-deserved.
I'm sorry to hear that Dan Penn will not be playing a gig Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. as listed on the Mercy Lounge webpage.
Concerning Buddy Miller, the AMA webpage and the Mercy Lounge site both list Buddy Miller's show on Thursday at 12:30 a.m. at the Cannery after Lucero's 11:30 p.m. show and not on Saturday night prior to Frank's show. However, if you have information otherwise, I defer to you.
I'm definitely looking forward to some surprises. I'd love to see Rich Gilbert, who will be playing Friday night at 10:00 p.m. at the Mercy Lounge with Thad Cockrell and Caitlin Cary, join some of the Honeycomb Cats and Frank on stage Saturday night for Frank's show.
But, whatever. This conference and Frank's Honeycomb showcase is surprise enough. Plus, shows by Solomon Burke, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Radney Foster, Emmylou Harris, Raul Malo, Buddy Miller, Allison Moorer, Marty Stuart, Billy Block, Webb Wilder, and LUCERO, [edit:and Billy Bob Thorton], will be more than sufficient.
Later, OldManIna"Honeycomb"CoffeeCan.

Yep, HeywoodJablome, I think the best Honeycomb road trip to plan for is one of the Honeycomb residency cities, e.g., Chicago, New York and London, ( http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13999 ) , OR Los Anjeleez if you get your way, that The Man spoke about in an interview posted here by FrankfanL and dayanara ( http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13989 ).

I couldn't find a photo of him. But that doesn't excuse his absence. If anyone can find one in the web, post it up and i'll give it priority amongst the other cats. meow. |

Well Done, fbc, well done!
Proper Recognition and Acknowledgements for all of the Honeycomb Cats.

We're missing two more, so our Honeycomb inlay says. One Ben Mumphrey (additional mixing)
And Reid Paley (i've just found out) who wrote 'Another Velvet Nightmare' with FB. |

Here's a better picture of Jim Demain the mastering engineer taken by me when he mastered my album last year.
Looks like he likes it...

And how do we get to hear your record? |

Oh my!!! What a fantastic topic. I have been listening to Honeycomb since it's release almost religiously everyday and I really wanted to put face on each name. What a fantastic album I have to say again.
I am also so glad to hear that there will be another album next year. That just made my day look brighter. |

Very glad I found this thread. Hope I'm not gonna get in trouble by bumping it since no one has posted in it in a while.
I live in the Shoals and have all my life. I'm not a Pixies fan or a Frank Black fan for that matter, but I love his work on "Honeycomb". Love it.
Don't have too much to add except that I recognized Mr. Tiven's name as the producer of my buddy Donnie Fritts' album that was done several years ago. Jon, do you have any interesting stories from those sessions? |

Okay, here's my classic Donnie Fritts album story.
I'm producing an album by my friend Donnie Fritts who is a great songwriter and he wants some vocal help because he's not the most confident singer in the world, so he invites half of Nashville to sing duets with him. We've got Delbert, Kristofferson, Waylon, Willie, Dan Penn, John Prine, you name it we got 'em. So I say we don't have a woman, Donnie if you're going to sing all these duets let's get at least one woman. But he's not recommending any so I pick a friend of mine who I think could add a little femininity to these hairy old geezers. This woman is better known as a songwriter than a singer at this point, but I think she can add a lot of charm and character to the album.
I play him her records, and he says I'm not sure. I said Trust Me. He's a litle nervous about it but he goes with it, does the duet. She is freaking over how great her voice goes with his, she's never recorded a vocal quite like this before but she's loving it. He likes it, but when he plays it for all his friends they're like Hmm, Donnie, I don't know. They've never heard a woman sing quite like this, she's not exactly Tammy Wynette.
I say Donnie, trust me.
The song: "Breakfast In Bed." (written by Donnie and Eddie Hinton, originally recorded by Dusty Springfield.
My friend the singer: Lucinda Williams.
All the reviews and radio loved the track. Particularly her singing, which was more restrained than what people were used to from her. Her next album was Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.
Pretty good story, eh?
bye, Jon Tiven |

Indeed, very nice story! Thanks for sharing.
Donnie is a great guy and a wonderful songwriter. I've been fortunate enough to hear his next record, which was produced by Mr. Penn. There's a song on it called "Robin in the rain" that will rip your heart out.
BTW, I heard Frank's version of "Dark End of the Street" on the Shoals-only radio station here in town. I had just heard a great live version by Dan and Spooner the day before. :)
