The lily was the symbol of the Royal French Family as well as the whole country (when France was a real Country, it sounds funny, but it was). Then, the flag was white with a blue or yellow lily.
The original shape actually refers to the magical bees that were buried in the tomb of Clovis, the legend also says (but I am more sceptical about this one...) that during the "Bataille de Tolbiac" (year 496) an angel appeared to Clovis and for some reasons made him a offer "I'll turn the 3 frogs on your shield (which were pagan symbols) into 3 beautiful lilys" (with an old French accent). Clovis accepted... And the Lily officialily became the symbol of the French Monarchy until 1830... Today you can find it on the Quebec flag and other obscure regions... THOSE LILYS are EVIL! Don't trust Them...
