Some things are opinions and some things are facts. Yes, Disc 2 really is that bad, Disc 1 balances it out though.

To be fair, technically "day one" should have been July 4, not almost a year ago when it was leaked. Jon Tiven jumped down everyone's throat who criticized because people were criticizing an illegally downloaded (not that I'm against it, but it is illegal) leak of the unfinished version of the album, which is quite different from criticizing the actual album after it's been released.

i think it set a certain tone though.

i agree with fbc and kathryn. these kinds of threads are good.

i remember when the first FB record came out he said in an interview that he wouldn't be surprised if Pixies fans weren't into it, and he hoped he might gain new fans, based on his new work. i think Honeycomb is comparable.

i doubt Frank would blame his fans if they weren't ALL into Honeycomb. just as different fans are into different albums. with this album hopefully he'll open up a new pocket of fans he didn't reach before, and they'll dig deeper and get into some of his other stuff. like all his albums, i honestly think he made it for himself (and not his fans).. with this one especially. which i respect. i'm happy that he's gone and done something different, like he usually does. i'm just not sure if it's up my alley this time. but again, it's still early to say so i reserve the right to change my mind

Why do we NEED any opinions (good or bad)?

"I'm here to save the board from all these positive reactions to Honeycomb!" Okay, great. Thanks.

i didn't mean to say he doesn't care about his fans.. i think he respects his fans. and he understands (as he exhibited in that interview) how some of his fans - even his most dear fans - might like some of his albums more than others..

I didn't enjoy it, I tried to give it a chance, maybe it would grow on me like so many others, but no, it never did.

To summarize this thread:

1. Nobody here likes Honeycomb, except me.

2. In fact I don't really like Honeycomb but I don't want to disappoint Mr. Tiven, that's why I say I like it.

The balance of power has shifted!

I have to say I was kind of surprised by how good Honeycomb was. I mean, I wasn't expecting not to like it, but most Frank albums take a while to grow on me. While there are some Honeycomb tracks that definitely fall into the "grower" category, there were quite a few that I liked pretty much immediately. Indeed, I might say it's the most instantly likeable Frank album since DITS. I think I already like it more than SMYT. Only time will tell what I think of it after it ceases to be the New Album, but I have to say that I like it. And I wouldn't have been afraid to say I didn't like it, if such had been the case.

Speaking of disliking, I don't care for the Frank Black Francis remix of "Planet Of Sound" at all. So there.

I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied.

I was critical of Honeycomb for a long time and thought that Frank had lost it with this album.... but now and after a large number of listens I am growing to love this album. I think its difficult to compare it with his other albums because its so different but I am starting to really like it. There are a couple of songs that don't do anything for me tho.

This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate!

I feel Honeycomb is a another album in FB's evolution, and exactly what some of us need to hear. I know it's cliched and kind of sappy, but SMYT came out the same time I was separated from my wife and it helped me see what was important. If SMYT was about regret, and sorrow, then Honeycomb for me is coming through the other side. As much as I love the Pixies (Lord knows I do), FB's solo work speaks to me much more so in my advanced age.

I think the catholics had achieved everything a band like them could.
Do you realise what an awesome journey FB and the C's to SMYT is?
I think they stopped at their top, Honeycomb is a new way and I think it's great.
One thing that's so wonderful about Frank is that he changes his way once in a while,
that keeps his music fresh. If you don't like it, wait a few years and it's likely
he will do a marimba-techno album or something. Can't wait

I haven't listened to disc one of FBF. Really. Nimrod, check out disc 2, you can't dislike Caribou and WIMM. They're amazing. Only Frank can cover Where Is My Mind and make it great.

Interesting post, I have to say from the raving in the forum I was expecting a masterpiece when Honeycomb flew through the letterbox last week and landed straight into the CD tray (well, it got there so fast it may as well have).

All I know is personally never to judge a frank black album before at least a hundred listens. I made a terrible, terrible error with dog in the sand for which I now pay for with a permanent review on amazon ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004UFTM/qid=1122292249/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/202-3413362-8870237 ).

I have to say Honeycomb is a strange mix. The first time I heard 'I burn today' it was beautiful, and still is, but I think 'Shrimp Song' and 'Sunday Sunny...' were far better off as rarities (how can you better the glen hansard duet???). They just seem too forced. But give me a week and I may be singing a different tune (metaphorically speaking, I hope).

It's totally pointless and off-topic, and I do apologise, but I always misread your handle as "maninthesack".

Is that signature from Braindead/Deadalive by the way?
