This was the Pixies' first Montreal show since their two-night stand in November 2004. It took place at Parc Jarry, the former home of the now-defunct Montreal Expos and a leafy expanse with nice spots to drink a cold one and relax. It was my first-ever outdoor Pixies gig, as well as the only time I've seen them play other than at night. I parked my car smack-dab against Stade Uniprix, where they opened for Weezer. I'll skip the "who should have opened for whom" rant.

But I will rant about how only cash was accepted at the disclive and merch tent, where I wanted to fill Dayanara's T-shirt order. I had to sweet talk my way out of and then back into the no-re-entry park to get to my car/wallet/money card. But now Dayanara will have a 2005 tour shirt and a certain French Canadian security guard has my undying thanks.

The dudes running the cash-only merch tent were blasting "Last Splash." The guy waiting next to me in line was wearing a Breeders T-shirt and we struck up a conversation. He said, "I got drunk with Kim Deal the last time the Breeders played in Montreal." I nicely said, "Lots of people have gotten drunk with Kim Deal." And we laughed and talked about how great the Breeders are.

Rhetorical question: What is better than standing at the general admission floor having a cold drink and a quick smoke and seeing the flying P drumset and knowing the Pixies are about to take the stage?

The crowd included the occasional pre-teen Weezer fan and her mom, who were fun to observe, passively staring as the band screeched its way thru songs. The floor was 3/4 full and not much moshing was going on, sad to say. I finagled my way to my favorite spot on earth, right below Frank.

Sartorial newsbreak! Frank wore his new glasses and a blue checkered shirt and black jeans. Kim wore a black sweater over a white T-shirt and black pants. I forget what Joey and Dave wore. Kim's shag looked totally cute. Frank's goatee was happily gone. All three of the guys were rocking the shaved head look. Oh, it was a good night to be alive.

I don't recall being at a show where Kim said "thanks" so many times. She even thanked the crowd in French between "Allison" and "Velouria." As always during the reunion tours, she never stopped smiling her entire time on stage.

Random stuff that some geeks like me might find of note:

"Vamos" came early in the set and was shorter than at the 2004 shows, as has been the case this year. Sadly, Joey did not catch the drumstick Dave threw to him.

The wind picked up during "Gouge," which was kinda cool.

During "Wave," lightning flashed in the sky.

At the beginning of "Broken Face," Joey jumped up and down a couple of times, which was out of character and cute.

More lightning during "No. 13 Baby."

Charles and Joey faced as they started "UMass" and had a couple of false starts, during which Charles smiled at Joey and shook his head "no" until they were in synch. I love the smiles Charles gives Joey when they're on stage. There is a palpable love and gentleness between those two long-time friends that is lovely to observe.

The band went straight from "Tame" into "Hey," really quickly, which was fun.

It was past 8:30 p.m. by the time they did "Hey" and the lights started.

Joey's guitar did some weird reverb noise thingie during "Gigantic," which was the last song and which included an abbreviated version of their "goodbye" schtick.

Here is the setlist:

July 10, 2005, Stade Uniprix, Montreal

In Heaven
Where is my mind?
Vamos
Nimrod's Son
Winterlong
Bone Machine
Gouge Away
I Bleed
Crackity Jones
Caribou
Isla De Encanta
Head On
Monkey Gone to Heaven
Allison
Velouria
Cactus
Wave
Broken Face
Debaser
No. 13 Baby
UMass
Tame
Hey
Gigantic

No encore, waved a quick goodbye and left the stage.

OK. This is the wacky part:

I got in my car and leaned down to grab some CDs off the floor for the ride home. Coming back up, I caught a distinct flash-o-Charles. He was unmistakably standing in a room with floor-to-ceiling glass, directly above my car. I was stunned, I put my glasses on and sure enough, all four of them were there with two people I didn't recognize, and a photographer was setting up a photo. After a minute, the photographer and the two strangers left and it was just the four of them in the hospitality suite and me on the street below, my head craned and feeling like a voyeur. There was no one else in the parking lot. For the next 10 minutes I watched them hang out and talk and sip from bottles at a conference-room-type table. It was surreal. The guys took seats and Kim stood. She took off her sweater. Almost immediately, she put it back on. She stood to Charles' left leaning down with her hands on an empty chair. At some point while talking to him she laughed and tossed her head back. Then Joey and Charles left. Dave and Kim hung for a minute, then she picked up a hanger with clothes on it and Dave looked around the room like he was making sure they didn't leave anything. Then they left. I felt slightly rude observing them but I had to catch this unique glimpse into Pixies group dynamics. Even from afar and unable to hear them, I caught a vibe of camaraderie. They seemed at ease and in a good place. I drove away and five minutes later I was cruising down the very happening Rue St. Denis. Twenty five more nights until my next Pixies show! How will I survive that long?

That's the photo I watched being taken. I love how I had no clue that was the guys from Weezer I was seeing. I recognize Charles in just a flash but Weezer's lost on me.

Thanks for posting!!!!!! Where did it run?

It's from the front page at weezer.com.
Did you see the Weez in that room with FB, etc.?
I'd love to get my paws on a dvd of that entire show!

Oh, man, you would have loved last night. You BELONGED there. It was such fun and a great summer evening event to attend, just the right amount of a warm breeze, a fun crowd, and the music.... I'll stop torturing you ....

Wow, now that sounds like fun, outdoor Pixies show, up next to the stage, staring up at The Man...

Cool review, girl. Sounds like you had a blast. I bet you're fun to party with. So, any guys hit on you, other than the guy wearing the breeders shirt, the French Canadian security guards, the dudes running the cash only merch tent, and...

Well, damn, I'm sure smiles from Frank did a helluva lot more for your ego and your dreams later that night, than anything else anyone there could have done...hey, you didn't tickle his leg or anything did you?

Sadly, I was not close enough to his leg to do anything to it. But it's always a good thing to be that close to the band.
Kim's smile radiated. And don't get me started on Joey's whole presence. But Frank, he looked so relaxed, very
Honeycomb-y, very loosey-goosey. I loooooooooooove him.

I didn't see subacultcha in your setlist. Just about my favorite song I think when I saw them last year. What was your favorite song this show and how did the band and the vocals compare to the Boston show?

Ha! They did Subacultcha in Boston. Boston was a meatier show, definitely more post-Doolittle
(Planet of Sound, Alec Eiffel).

Gouge Away because right as the wind picked up, Frank forcefully leaned into the mike with one knee bent.

Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about, by the way, [off-topic] what were you wearing, how was your look, and what did that wind do to you and your hair? [I guess I should email you these questions and if I don't get an adequate response that's exactly what I'll do]

It will surprise you to learn I was wearing a Pixies T-shirt. I am far more interested in what Frank was wearing. His baby blues stood out thanks to the blue checkered shirt he had on.
