quote: I think there is an unadressed gender dynamic that is hard to talk about on forum. Here there are a minority of women posters, and that can be weird where you have a largely male group with few gals about.
I agree, but it just seems to be so much worse on this forum than on other ones I've participated in. Many Internet forums are predominantly male, but the whole male vs. female thing just doesn't come up as much on other groups, at least as far as I know. I have no idea why this is, and there could certainly be both good (a general lack of sexism) and bad (women being afraid to speak up) reasons for it. I have noticed that, as soon as a poster here reveals that she's female, several guys will often pop up and ask her to post naked pictures, or something along those lines. Now, for the most part, I don't think these requests are serious, but is a newbie going to realize this? I'm certainly not opposed to potentially offensive humor, but when you don't really know somebody, it can be hard to tell when they're joking.
quote: Before any backlash and any "men too" I know, I know, if the majority of you feel the "beautiful men thread" propogates an attitude that causes these issues in men too then I would also agree with this thread being deleted for balance.
I don't think it does, but doesn't it kind of start a slippery slope when you start judging threads based on philosophical perceptions, rather than actual content? Maybe this is an exception to the rule, though. I don't know. I guess I'd like to see other people's opinions on it, as long as they're not of the "Hey, they deleted OUR thread, so they should delete THEIRS, too!" variety, because that's exactly the kind of competition that I think we should be getting away from.

sorry, that's a terrible idea. why is it off-putting to have two different threads? women have always been free to post in the 'beautiful women' thread if they wanted to, and plenty of men have posted in the 'beautiful men' thread. but if you try to force the two together you're just gonna get more people trying to be cute by posting fat people in their underwear and michael jackson, all that stupid crap that went on every once in a while.
how about we go back to the way it was and if someone feels offended they just say so. we've never been a community full of people who are afraid to say what they're thinking. and if someone is too intimidated they can email a mod and the mod will actually do something about it in a reasonable amount of time. that said, if we had to delete threads everytime someone got offended i don't think there'd be anything left to post in.
i am sitting here observing my emotional discomfort. |

If they (the newbies eg. MP) have any sense or decency they will know the request is not serious or just ignore it - surely not try it themselves. In yahoo forums there is the famous ignore button where a member can turn off another members posts in all ensuing threads or encounters. For example swimmer or that pure denizen poseur, who seems to finally have been locked from this forum.
quote I'm certainly not opposed to potentially offensive humor, but when you don't really know somebody, it can be hard to tell when they're joking. endquote
Better to take everything or just about everything as a joke. In certain circumstances, such as on the net.
quote Before any backlash and any "men too" I know, I know, if the majority of you feel the "beautiful men thread" propogates an attitude that causes these issues in men too then I would also agree with this thread being deleted for balance. endquote
Just don't read it - simple stoic imperturbability or indifference helps. Eliminate posts that cross a mod defined line. Mods could poll a panel of forum members to help define the preferred guidelines to gain a little more consensus.

Very objectively written Vo. There are some subtle clues in Dave's post's regarding each member's responsibility towards a particular thread. If certain discipline's can be maintained then I believe images and threads can probably be restored in time. I think Brian alluded to this with "All things must pass", also.
I think the ladies showed more discipline re: the beautiful men thread, therefore their privilege continues. That is only fair.
P.S. If I stay really cool and on topic can I be removed from newbie probation in a month or so? Just wondering.
Can you build consensus and acceptance Mr. Grieves?

says who? i don't think that people here did so, nor i've noticed misogynist behaviour of any kind. that thread (and mind you i didn't even post there nor i visited it but rarely)was about celebrities. so what? it was gossip, stupid and superficial. i'll repeat:so what? is this forum a clinic for the insicure personalities that can't handle a little of healthy jokes?
Its not always about insecurities. Personally I am a very confident individual, and more than anything else, I find it tiring. Its everywhere, all the time. Its the imbalance of it. __________ Don't believe the hype. |

hehe as Ken Goes (a man we all respect I think and admire to say the least) once said: it may be best to feed the dragon rather than draw swords
so
I definately don't agree with Dave Noisy but he does say that he was wrong sometimes that gives him some credit I am this close to write a superlong post which would end in a big Fuck You Dave! But what's the use of that?
He's the leader, I have to respect that I would rather have a friendly leader that was around a bit more but Fuck us, we should stop the whining and take the general chat elsewhere we can't talk about what we want to talk about (I think that Dave was right to delete the womenthread, but the way he did it was not the way) so let's forget the general shit here and do it someplace else (for instance www.surfacenoise.nl)

I'm not trying to win a popularity contest guys, and for the most part i am a very 'friendly' guy.
OldManInaCoffeeCan - it seems most people here know who i am. I could ask the same of you, and your pointless indignation.

For the past 3 to 6 months, OldMan has been more a part of and contributed more to this "community" than you have.
I say "community" because we've learned in the past week that it's not truly a community; it's your possession. |

Yeah, we all know who you are, you've established your reputation...may God have mercy on your soul!
Ask away Mr. Noisy, if you want to know who I am...you can ask here, you can email me, you can call me (edit: OldManInaCoffeeCan) I'm in the phone book, or you can meet me and we can talk face to face.
As for pointless indignation, nothing I do is pointless, that's one reason I stopped trying to have a discussion with you...truly pointless!
As for indignation, yes, you have aroused in me an intense emotional state of displeasure, the type of which I usually save for extraordinary people and circumstances.

Dave,
Will you reply to my question below? It's a serious question that is not intended to be antagonistic.
Had you simply deleted inappropiate pictures, banned the pedophile, and issued warnings to all members, what would you have been unable to accomplish that you were able to accomplish by taking the course of action that you took?

Darwin - before the last six months, how much time had i put into this Forum?? Are you out of your mind???
Maybe it was never a 'community' (at least as you define it) to begin with, and you had made assumptions about what goes on.
You can refer to the Registration Policy you somehow agreed to, in which you confirmed i have the right to moderate:
http://forum.frankblack.net/policy.asp
You've already agreed to these conditions, i don't know why you're complaining now. (It has not changed since Day 1. Everyone has to hit 'Agree' to register and post.)
OldManInaCoffeeCan - too kind that you see me as an extraordinary person, i surely am not however.
scruvs - i assume the action you referred to was 'delete the thread'. The fact that the thread would continue bothered me, since i feel it's inappropriate for this type of message board. Additionally, it's existance would serve to encourage this behaviour, or perhaps draw more people who are pedophiles, or are looking to objectify women.
Welcome back Tony - are you done with the previous handle? Why the 'new'?

I clearly said in the past 3 to 6 months. I know you did alot to set up this forum, but that was more than 6 months ago.
(I'll skip the insulting reply such as "Can't you read?" in response to your "Are you out of your mind???" Why? Because that would be rude and disrespectful.) |

I think I meant disabling all pictures for a week.
It's not a big deal now. It felt like a punishment to me, but I understand that you felt you needed to do it to manage retaliation. I just ask that if it happens again, please try to manage the situation more subtly because the more it happens the more it will affect members' willingnesses to share their pictures with others here. Believe it or not, some people here don't care at all about a beautiful women thread, some of us are here to because we're interested in learning more about a big bald white guy and the people who love him.

thanks Dave,
i'm calling myself "new" floop now because, well, i'm a new person now. thanks to you. given my new state newness, i figured using the word "new" would be a good way to describe my new self. it's short and to the point..
did i mention that i went to the Animal Rights Conference this past weekend in LA? i'm not kidding. we had an excellent vegan banquet and there were some inspiring speeches, particularly in regard to veganism as a way of life..
have you heard of it? |

Dave,
don't listen to new floop. he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.. the Animal Rights Conference was kind of interesting but the food tasted like ass. there were some hot chicks there though. who knew that animal rights conventions could be such a cornucopia of babes?
by the way, can i ask you a question: why did you ban me when i didn't do anything wrong? |
