Hey folks - I have bad news: the show has been cancelled. I checked the Beachcomber site, and it's no longer listed. I emailed them and they said the Newport Festival "won't allow Frank to play"?!??!? They told me my credit card had been credited with my 2 tix purchase. Please make sure you all get your $ back!

Fast Forward to One Year Later......
It's on!
Frank Black will be making his way back to the salty Cape on August 18, at the Wellfleet Beachcomber.
I'll post ticket purchase options as soon as the ink is dry. I can't thank Frank enough for remembering us after the Newport Folk Festival bullshit from a year ago.
cheers,

For three years I lived on the Cape, then 7 months after I moved he did a show at the Beachcomber. If it's really happening, I'll be there this time. |

Billboard Bits: Frank Black, Blues & Brews, Caldo Verde
June 15, 2006, 3:10 PM ET
Pixies frontman Frank Black has expanded his run of summer solo acoustic dates opening for the Foo Fighters with a host of headlining appearances. The outing, Black's first under his own name since 1995, will begin Aug. 9 in Salt Lake City and wraps Aug. 31 in Sacramento, Calif.
Sprinkled in between are seven opening slots with Foo Fighters, beginning Aug. 15 in Washington, D.C. Black will be spotlighting material from his two recent solo releases: last year's "Honeycomb" and the brand new "Fastman/Raiderman," due Tuesday (June 20) via Back Porch.
As previously reported, the Pixies will play seven European shows next month, beginning July 14 in Trencin, Slovakia.

Frank Black takes solo road behind new album
June 15, 2006 01:11 PM by Tjames Madison LiveDaily Contributor Pixies frontman Frank Black (tickets | music) will go solo this summer, forgoing the burden of a full backing band to support his new album, "Fast Man Raider Man," due in stores June 20.
Black will play a mix of his own solo acoustic shows and support dates for Foo Fighters during parts of their summer tour, kicking off the trek Aug. 9 in Salt Lake City.
"I'm excited about these dates," Black said in a press release. "I like doing solo shows, it's a very intense and personal experience, very different from playing with a band. I like the idea that I don't have to 'follow the beat,' that I can pull the songs a part a little bit, change the set right there on stage if I want. And playing theaters is the best kind of venue to see a concert--everyone's sitting down, relaxed, and ready to be entertained."
The solo dates are the singer/guitarist's first since 1995. Over the last decade he has toured extensively with several backing units, the longest lasting of these being The Catholics, with whom he recorded five albums in the late '90s and early years of this decade, the last of which was the 2002 combo of "Black Letter Days" and "Devil's Workshop."
Black, of course, was also front and center during the celebrated Pixies reunion over the last couple of years.
"Fast Man Raider Man," Black's 11th solo album since the original breakup of the Pixies in 1992, was recorded over a two-year period at studios in Nashville and Los Angeles, and features a long list of accomplished guest musicians, including The Band's Levon Helm, legendary keyboardist Al Kooper, and bassist Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick.
[Note: The following tour itinerary has been provided by artist and/or tour sources, who verify its accuracy as of the publication time of this story. Changes may occur before tickets go on sale. Check with official artist websites, ticketing sources and venues for late updates.]

• The cult of Frank: Distractions, who came of age listening to the Pixies, is happy to report that the band's legendary frontman, Frank Black, is set to bring his new solo acoustic tour to town. Haven't kept up with most of Black's post-Pixies catalog? That's a shame. He's got enough solo albums to stock a small store -- and some stand up next to the best of the Pixies. Try his latest, "Fast Man Raider Man," or, for what we think is the cream of the crop, 2003's "Show Me Your Tears." Black plays Harlow's (2708 J St.) on Aug. 31. Tickets ($15 advance, $17 at door) go on sale Saturday at The Beat, Dimple Records, Armadillo Records and Tickets.com. |

I've been so broke lately that I haven't been able to afford a ticket to this. I kept putting it off, saying, "Tickets will still be available next week, don't worry, you can buy one then," which is a terrible attitude to take towards seeing your favorite artist of all time -- in such a small venue, no less.
Luckily, I mentioned the show in conversation with my dad today and he bought me one as a gift.
He also bought one for himself, though, which kind of worries me. I mean, he has no clue who Frank Black is. I don't think he'd enjoy his music. Especially as this is going to just be an acoustic gig; a rocking show with the Catholics I'd feel better about, but not with just the man and his guitar. I'd love for my dad to have a good time, though...
Ah well. I'm going to see Frank sans Pixies for the first time since 2002. That's all that matters.

Sounds like a cool dad to me! BTW- He doesn't care who's playing, he just wants to hang with his son.
My dad would have said, "Tough shit, kid. You and your heavy metal horseshit are gonna have to meet up some other day. HA HA HA HA H-, (cough cough) HA-aaa-aaaaaaa!" |
