I love the wichita lineman cover, I like a lot of the covers they have done, have you heard the first we take manhattan form the I'm your fan album?

I love new adventures, again right time in my life for that album. Ebow the letter is stunning, New test leper is sweet, I love that album!

Do you guys know that Stipe sings some background vocals on Patti Smith's "Peace and Noise"?

Also, does anybody have a copy of Eddie Vedder singing "Be Mine" with Stipe at the Tibetan benefit concert? I've been trying to get my hands on that since 97. Thanks!

I certainly do. Some say it was their last great album.

They do but Up is a grower, I described it as pastel REM once, and it is soft and lovely but different.

I hate the fact that UP was so slagged off. It's a fantastic album, as is Monster which also got slagged off.

The thing with monster is REM gained a lot of fans around the automatic/out of time era and monster was a lot different to those two albums, I think the bad press around the time was knee jerk to this. A lot of people forgot that REM sounded a lot different pre out of time/automatic as well. I love monster me.

Never heard or heard of the I'm your fan album.

Up is very good. At My Most Beautiful is a perfect song (I just listened to the cd in the car again).

I'm ashamed to say that I finally bought Reveal about a year ago and lost it within a week...any thoughts on it?
I bought Around the Sun but haven't gotten into it yet.

I haven't listened to those two very much at all I have to confess

The I'm Your Fan is worth digging up if you can find it, Pixies do a cover and Nick Cave as well as REM, it's worth it for those three alone!

'Around the sun' is not at all that bad.

I miss the old silly songs though. They're always very deep and serious now.

'Automatic' is one of my fave ten albums ever. Every song is a gem.

Have you ever swum naked at night listening to "Nightswimming"?

They performed Sitting Still, E-Bow and End of the World at their final gig. Patti Smith came onstage for E-Bow.

Must've been great.

It's eating his face.

started thus

There was a glitter phase I am struggling to find a picture of.

evolved thus

eating face

he's gone bonkers. (ignoring previous terrible ponytail and monk-do)

I still love him

I've never really been into REM, but they're all right. Besides, they're friends with Scott McCaughey, which gives them some points in my book.

First I'll say that they are talented, I do like songs like "Tongue", "Sidewinder sleeps tonite", and I'll always love "Stand" because it was the intro song to the great show "Get a Life". That said, I have always found them to be painfully listenable. They are just kind of generic in a sense. Kind of like the Beatles, immensely talented but always playing it safe. Even their "experimental" albums just seemed so ordinary sounding. And Michael Stipe with his cutesy alternative schtick and half baked political stand points. Like wearing a bunch of t-shirts at the same time for the MTV music awards one year that said little cliche things like "WEAR A CONDOM" and such. It just all seemed a little staged or something. For some reason he (as a personality) has always irritated me which most likely (and somewhat unfairly I'll admit) affects my view of the music, but if I hear "Losing my Religion" ever again I'll choke the shit out of who ever is closest to me! They have been around for a long while though and there is something to be said for that; why did Bill Barry quit the band anyway?

That is precisely why Bill Berry quit. He got an intense headache during a concert in Switzerland, left the stage, was transported to a hospital. They found an aneurysm and operated on him. REM had to cancel part of their tour. When they resumed Stipe jokingly referred to it as "The Aneurysm Tour."

From what I can recall though, didn't he fully recover from the aneurysm and resume playing with them shortly after?

Right. That's when Stipe made his little joke about it being the aneurysm tour. I think he subsequently got sick again. At any rate, he later quit and they put out UP without him.

Berry never liked touring, he gets homesick. He recovered completely after his surgery but decided that that was the end of him traveling the world. He is a farmer now.

Wow, pretty harsh comparing them to the beatles. I'm sure they would be offended. I'm not a musical historian or anything, but I would say the beatles broke quite a bit of new ground as opposed to playing it safe. Furthermore, r.e.m. was unlike anything going on in the 80's when they emerged as far as I was aware. I'll grant you the point that Losing My Religion is quite annoying at this point after hearing it a million times, or a few for that matter (never was one of my favorite songs by them). Like someone said earlier in this thread, if that was your first exposure to r.e.m. you would hate them, but if you listened in depth to earlier albums I believe it is possible to appreciate just about everything they have ever done for having quite a unique approach. Some did have more of a "place it safe" approach than others, I'll give you.
