I like them, but not as much as I used to. I have fond memories of It's The End Of The.....playing in the student union in, when was it, 1988-89 maybe. Green is probably my favourite album. Favourite songs, mmm, Me in Honey, World Leader Pretend, and one off Murmur (which I don't have anymore sadly, the tape died :() - a quick trip to Amazon tells me it's Perfect Circle. And The One I Love.

Think they've lost it over the last couple of albums, certainly what I've heard hasn't interested me at all.

I know you love them, starmekitten!! I prefer their earlier stuff. Pilgrimage is one of favorites. I saw them at Slane a few years ago.

I'd find it hard to choose a favorite REM song.

Back in '85 it was either Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams or REM. Document sounded so much different and was obviously in a far greater league, since then I've loved REM. Twenty years later I still love Document and Murmur. I think Green was their last great album but they still produced some of their best songs on the latter albums.

Favorite REM song: Country Feedback.

Radio free Europe, So central rain, Fall on me, Welcome to the occupation, Disturbance at the Heron house, World leader pretend, Find the river, E-bow the letter. All great songs.

One of my favorite mix cds ever, titled fuckmekitten, is an REM only compilation.

i miss bill berry and his eyebrows.

I've probably listened to Out of Time, Automatic, and Document more than the rest (though I own their entire catalog up to the last best-of albums). Great memories for OoT and Automatic...break=up stuff and college...put the cd in, turn on loop all, and study for 12 hours to r.e.m.

i'd like to see 'em live...i've not done that...

tobafett, you should try and catch them on the current tour. Sure they play too much off the last record and they play their "hits" but when I saw them in Cape Town and Jo'burg they did play So central rain, Rockville, Welcome to the occupation and Country feedback which made it really worthwhile.

I can't think of any of their newer stuff off-hand, though. did they play some new songs on Live8? i'm trying to slog through watching all of it online...

thanks, wil!

Wilhelm, I couldn't read in your post the words " Southern Central Rain" without my throat catching.
"These rivers of suggestion are driving me away."
And I've sobbed, just sobbed and shaked, watching them play "Country Feedback" live.

But how awesome that you saw them do those songs, Wilhelm! How recently did you catch those two shows?

Speaking of their older tunes, anybody else adore "Little America"?
I can often be found mumbling to myself, "Jefferson I think we're lost."

I can't even begin to express what REM has meant to me through the years.
There are parts of my adolescence that I'm not sure I'd have made it through without REM, as ridiculous as that may sound. They've been ingrained in my heart!
My favorite album is probably Automatic for the People now, although it's been, at various times, Life's Rich Pagaent, Reckoning, and maybe even Document.
More to come when at home, I find I have to be careful how far down any sort of emotional path I go at work. Sort of blocked off to some of me while sitting at this desk in this office.
Listening to: REM-Storytellers even though it's breaking my 'more than twice in a week' rule I loosely keep for work songs.

Automatic means a lot to me, was released at the right time in my life to embrace it. I have try not to breathe on my little mp3 player and I can't help but smile at it.

I'm compiling a personal REM best of, sparked by Wilhelms fuckmekitten post, I'll post the list later.

Also, picture that is now non was from the REM Up tour in 1999

I think Murmur is my favourite, though I think Monster is vastly underrated.

I am not sure I can pick a favourite track. I'd be here all day.

I went from one REM album to 11 within a couple of months this year.

I am so glad there are others out here not ashamed to exclaim they love REM.

Seen them twice (Green and Monster tours). Fabulous shows. I am jealous of my brother to this day, because he saw them during the Murmur tour in a great tiny venue.

Favorite song is a cover of "King of the Road" on the Dead Letter Office album. It is totally off the cuff, but I find it delightful.

I Believe or Moral Kiosk (Laughing?) are up there for me, but...gosh..so many...just prior to 1989 there are so many...i'm not as familiar as I could be with the later stuff.

Kathryn, you've become quite the afficianado since starme started hooking you up with the vintage stuff.
Thats a nice thing.
I hope you've turned her onto some FB.

REM was one of the "four horsemen of salvation" for me in high school.
When i decided to get my shit together and stop hanging out in the bathroom smoking in the morning with the rednecks, stop listening to classic rock, cut my hair and do my homework, there were suddenly interesting, intelligent people around me.
They handed me REM, Pixies, The Cure and U2 among other things and I've not been the same since.

REM was probably as important or more than the Pixies because of the folkish sensibility in the music..it connected with my partially acoustic upbringing and reminded me that there are different definitions for what a "song" is...much as the Pixies did but with more rock or punk feel. The two of them togehter...well...we've all been listening to 'alternative' and know what happened to millions of other kids at the same time.

I'll always love them and i don't give a shit what any of the hipster kids say.

Kim, but you have hurt me deeply, man, deeply. I've been listening to the boys from Georgia since Chronic Town came out. First saw them in '86.

And, yes, I have tried with Tre, I have tried.

i thought there was a thing where you guys were talking (back when she went by another name) and you said you weren't too familiar with early stuff and that she had been sending you cpoies of early albums.

i'm nuts.

i bow to thee in apology and reverence.

i have a Chronic Town tape.

I've said this before but this is the proper thread for it.

many people have put me in a position to defend REM over the years.
to be in a forum with people who so avidly and openly have such affection for them like I do is really really great.
In fact, I think it's starmekitten's name that made me think 'this must be a forum with good people'

Is it totally biased that I think people with an appreciation for REM are maybe of better character than those who do not?
if it isn't biased, it's probably at least a little silly :)

Same for me. I was in Texas, the land of bad country music and top 40 radio (in the 80s). From some show on MTV (produced by IRS records) and Late Night with Letterman, I somehow found REM when Murmur came out. So, I was the only kid in a high school of 1500 that had any knowledge of REM. I do remember one girl who stood out because she liked U2 back in the October days. Then, from REM my interests spread and then (as I've said many times on this forum) I moved to California for college and REM played on campus the second week I was there. I knew I had found a better home. So, I'll always have a warm spot for REM, but I haven't purchased the last 2 albums.

For some reason on hope I love this lyric, I don't know why:

you want to trust the doctors
their procedure is the best
but the last try was a failure
and the intern was a mess.

Did you notice it's dedicated to Cohen for it's similarity with Suzanne?

Up is, I think, the last rem album I got passionate about, I haven't given reveal and around the sun much chance to my shame

Don't start this, kitten, don't. To quote Interpol, "the hurting is so painless."

More from REM's "Up:"

I want you naked I want you wild
I want the stars to know they win
Give me that smile just give it me, just turn it on I'm lost again

...I'm what you found, I'm upside down
You're everywhere, you're in the air
and I am breathing you

REM has been one of my top 4 bands of my life. Got into them in fables days when the singer of our cover band in high school had us play camera(reckoning) and driver 8. A girl actually filmed a music video of us and our version of camera which would be funny as hell to have now.
I love reckoning, but Life's Rich Pageant was at a perfect time of my high school days-lots of partying and fun times while driving around and listening to that tape.
And Marsist-the same thing happened to me about michael stipe checking me out at the two shows we saw on the document tour while I was in college. We camped out and had 2nd and 3rd row seats for the two shows which 10,000 maniacs opened for. The shows were so good, and I could swear that he was staring at me a little too much (god knows why me??) but it was pretty funny.
Doesn't anyone here like New Adventures...? I really liked that album. One song I would love to get was on an rem special I saw like 10 years ago where they did a soundcheck while singing a song-don't know who it's by, but had the line "I am a lineman for the county" and was a working class song about somebody working for the utility company or something, but it was beautiful.

All of the true things I am about to tell you are shameless lies
