Hey Mike, I am supposed to go with Johnny M., but I just found out yesterday that I CAN'T!!!! I have to help run our company-wide yearly inventory all next weekend! Go figure...I am devastated. I gotta call Johnny today and let him know. But I hope you enjoy! You are in for a treat that everyone else would kill for!

that sucks mikeW and Brian.

I've been telling everyone that I think there won't be a better show in my lifetime than seeing SNOOP and the pixies back to back.

I've got friends coming into town Friday night so looks like I'm not going to be able to cruise down to SD from the bay area, but man it sure sounds alot better than sittin home in this heat.

I hope you guys are able to work things out to see the show. Some things are more important than work.

Little piece on Street Scene here:

http://www.sdcitybeat.com/article.php?id=3382

PARKING LOT SCENE
An overview and essential info for Street Scene 2005

by Troy Johnson

The development of downtown San Diego has done a lot of good. The area now boasts fewer blue dots on the Megan’s Law website than there used to be, which is nice. But with every building that goes in, something gets squeezed out. And that’s what happened to the hugely popular urban party known as Street Scene in 2005.

Last year, instead of snaking through the streets of the Gaslamp, the event was held in the Petco Park parking lot—which was like moving from a nook-and-crannied Victorian to military housing. This year, they’re on another slab o’ steamin’ tar, and the nearest street is named after Don Coryell.

Qualcomm stadium is the spot, and it’ll be filled with as many people who showed up each Sunday last year to see Drew Brees give CPR to his career. And as of press time, the city hasn’t offered a ticket guarantee.

Unless you’re at a Judas Priest concert, parking lots aren’t very cool places to hang out. Whether it works or not, head honcho Rob Hagey and crew have taken extra measures to ensure it doesn’t feel like an excessively cultured Warped Tour.

First off, the lineup is worthy, including namers like The White Stripes, Pixies, Snoop Dogg and The Flaming Lips alongside record-geek runaways like Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, Viva Voce and Autolux. They’ve also brought in extra Street Scene eye candy and diversions, including carnival-style rides just in case Fergie of Black Eyed Peas makes you nauseous and you wanna finish the job.

It’s not Hagey’s fault that downtown is too impacted now to hold the event. Moreover, it’s the Gaslamp Association’s loss. But it’s kind of a make-or-break year for Street Scene. Hopefully they can overcome the odds and make an undesirable venue cool for two days. If not, we could be looking at the end of an era and a gaping hole in San Diego’s cultural almanac.

Either way, you’re going to be able to watch the Pixies play San Diego while a nearby veteran bitches about how “they can’t call it ‘Street Scene’ when it’s in a fuckin’ parking lot.’”

Where: Qualcomm Stadium, Mission Valley.

When: July 29 and 30. Gates open at 4 p.m., music from 4:30 p.m. to midnight.

Age: Open to all ages;

21+ in the VIP area.

Cost: $55 for a single-day.

Two-day passes are $85. visit www.street-scene.com or call

888-487-4347.

VIP: If you’re going for both days—and think a good concert experience is worth the price of a mid-size iPod—then it’s not a bad idea to buddy-up with someone and splurge on these suckers. Nice getaway from the throng. For $300, you get two tickets for both days with special VIP parking and entrance; a cash bar with not-as-grueling lines; upgraded porta-potties (oxymoron, we know); decent dinner included each night (choice of stuff like chicken fajitas, Cajun-style Andouille sausage, Texas briskets and salads for veggie-folk); and eight bands that are only playing for VIPs (Mocean Worker, Particle, Viva Voce, Transglobal Underground, The Dead 60’s, Gram Rabbit, Something For Rockets and local jazz-trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos). The VIP area includes large plasma TV screens with feeds from the stages, plus pool tables, ping-pong and video games.

Parking: $15. Note: must be purchased ahead of time. We suggest you take the trolley, which goes directly into Qualcomm. Being squashed by drunk music fans is better than sitting in traffic.

Odds ’n’ Ends: You can’t bring booze, drugs, backpacks, dogs, weapons of minor destruction or recording devices, although disposable cameras are cool. And unless you’re dying to try out your new aloe plant, bring sunscreen, whitey.

I just got back from my first Pixies show and I'm Amazed! I was about 50 feet from the stage just right of center and I really wish I could have been closer. The set started out with Bone Machine and ran through a lot of "hits." I wish I could remember the setlist, but I doubt it will be very accurate. They didn't keep us fans waiting long, which made me very happy. They were able to play a fairly long set. In Heaven was played, as well as both versions of Wave of Mutilation. I really don't know what else to say...they kept me enthralled the entire time and left me begging for more. For and encore we were treated to Kim and Gigantic (Thank you!!!) Oh, yeah, Kim did the lead vocals on In Heaven. Cactus and Nimrod's Son were top notch, too. Anyway, thank you Charles and Kim and Dave and Joey. I can now die a happy man You all continue to amaze me and inspire me. So, thanks.

Does anyone have a complete setlist? And what are the chances of there being a recording of the show? Anyone else attend and have a review?

PS: I encountered some of the rudest folk ever tonight, almost ruining my evening. Some people need to learn to be a little more respectful toward others at shows...we are all there for the same reason and even in a drunken bliss/stupor should all be able to get along. (Does that sound Cheesy or what?)

glad you enjoyed the show brokencali. I can't wait to read more about the show and see what people thought of both snoop and the pixies. I don't think there are any official recordings of the show. I don't think anyone is allowed to get upset at a pixies show. If you come out of the show with bumps and bruises, covered in beer and sweat and blood, then all you can do is smile and realize that you just saw a really good rock show.

Well, I wound up making it! Frank got us in on VIP list, but no backstage access, which was fine 'cause it was hot and very crowded, and by the end of the night we were bushed. They played for an hour and fifteen minutes, and tore through about 22 songs. The highlight though was LEVITATE ME (!) which Frank played for my friend and his brother (he text-messeged him after the show and said 'we played that for you!'). How exciting!
Anyhow, the set list, out of order, was as follows (may be missing a couple):

Caribou, Levitate Me, Nimrod's Son, Bone Machine, Where Is My Mind?, Vamos, Gigantic, Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation fast and slow, Here Comes Your Man, Cactus, Dead, Monkey Gone To Heaven, I Bleed, No. 13 Baby, Hey, Gouge Away, Velouria, Is She Weird, In Heaven, Planet of Sound, U-Mass.

I managed to squeeze myself very close to the stage, and jumped up and down like a wild banshee during the entire set, pretty much working off my 5 vodka and RedBulls. The sound was incredible for an outside event. Oh, and for those of you interested, Snoop Dogg played simultaneously on another stage, so they didn't exactly share the bill. And the Flaming Lips sucked. I don't get them.

Fun show!

Flaming Lips Have A Ball, White Stripes Paint The Stage Red At Street Scene
08.01.2005 7:03 PM EDT

Black Eyed Peas, Pixies, Louis XIV also play San Diego festival.

SAN DIEGO — With a few exceptions, such as the gang signs waving in front of Snoop Dogg and the mosh pit for Social Distortion, the San Diego Street Scene was Coachella on concrete.

Now in its 21st year, the festival reinvented itself over the weekend with a sprawling new location and beefed-up, ultra-hip lineup.

With the White Stripes, the Pixies, the Flaming Lips and 35 other bands spread out on four stages over two nights, there were definite similarities to Southern California's other annual festival, only without the soft fields on which to rest your bottom after long walks from stage to stage.

In some ways, however, Street Scene, which drew 40,000 Friday and 35,000 Saturday, was actually superior to Coachella. The lineups on each stage had more defined themes so people wouldn't have to wander (punk fans, for example, could watch Social D, Flogging Molly, Rise Against and the Adolescents perform one after another on Friday). Massive video screens and widescreen TVs made viewing easier for those in the beer tents. Carnival rides and inflatable toys provided entertainment between shows. And the stages were all angled away from each other, leaving little sound interference.

The biggest hitch, for fans and bands, was fighting the horrific traffic to the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot. Southern California freeways are already typically congested on Friday afternoons, but for those traveling from Los Angeles, the two- to three-hour drive took closer to seven.

As a result, the tardy Autolux missed their 4:30 p.m. slot, the Black Eyed Peas started an hour late for the same reason, and Garbage barely made their start time after suffering what singer Shirley Manson joked onstage was the kind of trip that can drive a band apart. (Come on, festival promoters, did we learn nothing from Woodstock? Where were the helicopters?)

With traffic horror stories spreading, Wayne Coyne, whose Flaming Lips were a highlight on Saturday, rode the city's trolley to the venue Friday night to catch some bands. "It was like empty on the way over, and then about three-fourths of the way into the White Stripes set we thought, 'We'd better leave before everybody gets on that trolley,' " he recalled backstage the next afternoon. "Well, we were drastically too late. It was like a death ride. They packed like 400 people into a space where there should be like 20."

It was worth it for Coyne, as it likely was for other concertgoers, as the White Stripes were Friday's show stealers, delivering a spastic set that saw Jack White jumping from guitar to piano to mandolin, all the while singing into microphones sporadically placed around the stage, which was decked out completely in red, white and black. Played entirely on piano and drums, "My Doorbell" became a different, sparser song than the version on Get Behind Me Satan, but was equally infectious.

While the White Stripes were channeling blues, country and garage on one stage, the Killers were putting their new-wave roots on display a few stages away. Dressed in a checkered jacket, singer Brandon Flowers embraced one of the largest crowds of the weekend, often directing his mic toward fans as they sang along to hits like "Mr. Brightside."

The Black Eyed Peas' tardiness had some of their crowd booing, but the mass (also one of the largest) stuck around regardless and was treated to a hit-filled set with live band accompaniment. While it lacked the spectacular breakdancing of a typical Peas show, the set offered Fergie a chance to show off her live vocal chops.

Earlier on the Stripes/Peas stage (the most eclectic of the festival), Kasabian followed the politically charged (International) Noise Conspiracy with a blend of atmospheric electronica and British punk that provided a perfect soundtrack for the setting sun.

The early evening highlight on the Killers stage came courtesy of Louis XIV, who were sandwiched between Garbage and Hot Hot Heat. For their set-closing rendition of "Finding Out True Love Is Blind," the glam rockers turned the song into a psychedelic jam complete with additional guitars and vocals from Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci.

Backstage, Louis XIV singer Jason Hill said he was thrilled to see his hometown festival improve. "Before, it was a good festival. but they had a lot of sh---y bands and one or two good bands," he said. "And the thing was, you'd have like James Brown as the headliner. And I love James Brown, but come on. I don't love him for 60 bucks a ticket."

On Saturday, the Flaming Lips were the talk of the festival, thanks in large part to Coyne's entrance inside a massive plastic bubble that allowed him to walk atop the crowd (as he did at Coachella in 2004; see "Cure, Pixies Hottest Things At Coachella (Aside From Weather)"). "I'm going to come back out from the stage, but tell everyone else I descended from the sky," he told the audience before getting in the bubble.

With a herd of dancers in furry animal costumes surrounding him, Coyne later led the Lips and the crowd through surprisingly straightforward covers of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." For the latter, footage of President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld was interspersed with explosions and flames on the screens next to the stage, easily the strongest political statement of the festival.

The Pixies (with a less talk, more rock approach), 311 (who were joined by Bad Brains' H.R. for "Who's Got the Herb?") and Death Cab for Cutie were among Saturday's other standouts.

Hmmm...it only took us an hour and a half to get out to San Diego...from L.A. Granted we left at noon, and were there by 1:30...so we were early...but isn't that the smart thing to do? We had lunch with some people and headed over to Qualcomm at 4:00. Traffic? Not really. In fact, we sat in traffic for no more than 20 minutes, parked with relative ease, and when it came time to leave, we were out in 30 minutes. I don't know what this review is talking about. As for Coachella on concrete...I agree. But, wasn't that to be expected? This year's Street Scene had been planned to be in the parking lot for quite a while. But like the review said, it was set up very convieniently. The nice thing was that it was not hot at all on Saturday. I thought it was going to be torturous. It was nice. And anything designed for 35,000+ in attendance cannot be held anywhere but a field or gigantic parking lot. All that aside, I agree about Death Cab For Cutie...I don't know anything about them, but I enjoyed them. Along with these folks called the Von Bondies (or something). They were cool. I hated the Flaming Lips. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Totally dumb band. Oh! It was really cool being in the VIP area because the drinks were dirt cheap and they weren't stingy with the booze! Very cool!

Oldman, you're hooked up too though. pictures of the kids backstage at shows. I'm jealous of both of you.

Oh and I can't forget Kathryn's voyeurism peeking in windows at the Pixies/Weezer show. Even that's ... well ... well I'm jealous of that too.

I have to try and sing really bad karaoke in that pixiesdiscs.com contest to win backstage passes to the newport show, that's how lame I am.

Hey Carl, if he gets to hear your voice maybe he'll invite you to finish up the tour with 'em singing backup vocals, and then hire you to tour with the 'Comb Cats. There's lots of backup vocal parts for you to sing on Honeycomb. And, if you need an agent, let me know, I'm a very shrewd and tough negotiator. I'll get you what you deserve!

He might need someone to join him on Strange Goodbye (singing ability obviously not a requirement, I kid, I actually like Jean Black's vocals, mostly).

Ooooooohhhh, that was a stinger Darwin! (I like 'em too, Genuine and Real!)

I don't think Carl has the other requirement to sing backup on Strange Goodbye, i.e., he's not The Man's ex-spouse/lover, are you Carl?

All kidding aside, I bet you do have a good voice Carl. Good luck Friday.

[Now back to the kidding] Are there gonna be parts to some songs where you take a page out of The Man's book on singing, you know, the page where he divulges his method for singing in screams, "you gotta scream like you hate the bitch" [that's a quote from Frank, just can't remember where I read it]. I've actually tried that in my truck, it hurts a little at first, but you get over it.
