Whilst I'm not aware of all the ins and outs of the subject, there is growing support for nuclear power, even amongst some environmentalists I think. It's really because of the increased threat of CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. We need an alternative and we need it now. Nuclear power provides an alternative without the greenhouse gas problems. Obviously it has its own problems, but they are not quite as immediate.
I think that's the rationale anyway.

I'm more concerned with his justification...for a man so paranoid of "the evil of terrorism", billions of dollars taken from us to build big bullseyes makes my eyebrow arch higher than Spock's. But I believe looking for alternatives may be cheaper and a bit more of a scientific advance than resorting to a wide range hazard potential. I know that's a naive and idealistic statement, but I just don't get Bush (heh).

I'm kind of torn about nuclear power. It certainly has the potential to be disasterous, but I wonder how many lives are shortened by coal burning plants.

There's debate about whether ethanol takes more fossil fuels to produce than it replaces. I tried googling for more information but most of the studies seem to sponsored by the Corn Growers of America. They have their agenda.
There's also vegatable oils. Willie Nelson fuels his tour buses with that and they smell like french fries. |

Here's a link to a liberal blog that has some pretty cool links to new (at least new to me) ideas for renewable energy sources. Such as windmills at 15,000 feet in the atmosphere and solar towers that have been built in Australia and are like large chimneys in which the hot air rises and turns turbines. lLarge solutions? I don't know, but pretty cool stuff.

Everything I have read about ethanol makes me think it is inefficient and dirty to produce. Hence the need for more and more funding for research.
The ethanol lobby is one of the most powerful in the country. Why you ask? Well I will tell you. First off, they spend a lot of money. Secondly, the major ethanol producers are big players in Iowa and surrounding area's. They buy corn from those folks in Iowa. So, any politician who EVER thought about running for Prez can be easily convinced to take the $ from the lobbyists AND not alienate those all important Iowa caucus members who have an inordinate say in who gets nominated for President by the parties.
Tom Daschle was a major pimp for ethanol. His wife is a millionaire lobbyist for ethanol. But, dont get me wrong, Repubs line up just like Daschle for their peice. Its a bipartisan pork-fest.

Nuclear energy is vastly misunderstood and sensationalized. I think there are lots of viable ways of producing it and storing it safely and without having read this thread much, I just wanted to chime in and say that given my own education on the topic as an engineer, I'm pretty for it as long as it's regulated closely and carefully and some sort of Candu inspired safety mechanism is in place as well.

I think that the flex cars in South America are a huge step in the right direction. One of the by-products of ethanol is an animal food pellet. Technology will never advance unless strides are made to improve upon it but, one cannot improve upon something that does not have the ability to make mistakes. If there is a heavier handed push by the population for increased ethanol research and production the technology will become more efficient. How can we not consider improving upon a resource that is sustainable and will finally help to give back to the Prairie farmers and expand the economic viability in specific rural regions. These farmers are the people who have been sustaining our "city" lives for the past century and receiving very little in return. If you invest in ethanol now and hold on you may become one of the asshole ethanol tycoons fifty years from now. The share value of Badger State Ethanol has doubled in three years!

| Scary. Then again, it's not a cut and dried issue. I'd don't know if nuclear power is the worst option to go for, in regard to the environment (and it's inhabitants!). I'd have to get my facts right before commenting! :) |

the path we're on now pretty much guarantees that we're headed for monumental disaster in the future.. maybe not in our lifetime, but definitely within the next few generations. nuclear power has so much potential
i find it amazing that, with everything we know about environmental danger and impending doom, we're going the exact opposite direction and building even bigger cars and talking about drilling in wildlife reserves.. meanwhile we have the technology to make cars that run on little or no gas but they're not promoted

It's a monetary and societal issue though isn't it, people want big cars, people want the big statements, people don't want to fork out on eco-cars which are currently more expensive than normal cars and less, er, powerful? The market isn't there, so nominal amounts of money and research go that way. Environmental issues always seem to be low down on the list, why worry about the future when the people of the now are complaining and consuming.
Sustainability, it's such a pretty word. There's a couple of totally environmentally friendly little villages I think I read about, I'll see if I can find the link for it.
Actually, the labour and conservative party over here around the time of the election were advocating nuclear power as a way to combat this "energy crisis" I used to visit Lancaster and Morcombe way a lot, and hang out in the lake district one of the most stunning parts of the uk, and the big plant there, Sellafield, has a visitors tour I went on, it was just so big and frightening and "Adam Atom" the friendly face of Nuclear energy wasn't helping any. You only have to google Sellafield to see stories of leaks and sea pollutants, it's clear that here at least, they don't have a clue what they are fiddling with,

people want big cars because that's what car companies want them to want. . and the oil companies don't want car companies pushing their non-gas-using models.. when do you ever see commercials for eco cars?
i don't think they're that much more expensive, people just don't know about them..
