My wife and I and our three ferrets are planning a move from Boston to Portland, OR around early October. We'll probably be driving because most airlines either won't let you fly with ferrets or will charge you an extra ticket for them. We've heard that the rockies can start to get hairy around early october with snow, but I was wondering if anyone here had some advice about that and maybe some tips on shipping our stuff cross country.
Will I ever reach 1000?

Be sure to take some kind of hallucinogenic drug around the time you reach Nebraska. It's like, 9 hours from east to west.

U-Hauling with a big truck and your car on a trailer is no fun, but you can do it. It's just a long boring set of days. I've done it 3 times (Davis to Connecticut, Santa Barbara to Michigan, Michigan to Davis) and each time we investigated using a moving company but that's really expensive. And, the one time that we did use a moving company (Connecticut to Santa Barbara) they tried to rip us off by charging extra for moving our stuff off the big truck and onto a smaller truck that could get into our apartment complex. They also broke numerous things.
Advice:
1) if you don't have alot of stuff look into one off the services where they drop a canister in front of your place, you fill it up, and then they put it on a train or something.
2) Do Not use an extreme cheap moving company. They'll load up the truck and then when they arrive at your new place they'll tell you that you owe more money and they have all of your stuff.
3) Google any moving company that you are thinking of using.
4) If you're Uhauling stick to the Interstate. It's boring, but it and the reststops are designed for the bigger trucks.
5) If you take 80 I think you mainly hit the mountains in Utah and the high plains in Wyoming. If that worries you in early October (I would guess it's not a problem), you could take the southern route through New Mexico and Arizona.
6) Make sure the people where you rent the trailer know how to put it on. We had a trailer fly off at a red light and are lucky we didn't kill anyone. |

darwin's given you some excellent advice.
To expand on points 4 + 5:
I suggest taking I-90 to Cleveland, 71 to Columbus, 70 to St. Louis, 44 to OK City, then 40 to California,
then head up to Oregon. You won't have to worry about the weather.
Have fun! I've done this a few times and it can be an amazing experience.

| you could play it by ear weather-wise. you can easily avoid weather by taking the southern routes.. but that drive on the 70 through the rockies is beautiful. worth it if you can pull it off. i've driven across the entire country 4 times, various different routes, and i have to say that's one of the most beautiful drives i've been on.. |

Thanks for the tips. We're trying to cram all our possessions into our minivan and not have to deal with a trailer so the rockies will be easier. Our AC needs fixed which may determine how south we go!

Consider yourself very fortunate if you can cram all of your possesions into a minivan. I use to move backforth between Texas and San Diego with all of my stuff fitting into a Toyota Corolla, but now I'm bloated with possesions.
You can ship books at book rate (not too bad a price) if you come up a little short on space. |
