Excuse my ignorance, Denis, but what's the relationship between "Smog - In the Pines" and Lead Belly - "In the Pines"?
It's pretty much the same song, but at the same time, it's not.

It's a traditional song, actually. It's not written by Lead Belly.

Are you talking with your inner self? I have no idea. I don't know the Leadbelly song, is that the one covered by Nirvana? Maybe it's some traditional song adapted by everyone, like COnstant Sorrow Man or Fare Thee Well.

That one covered by Nirvana, yes. With twisted lyrics. One of my fave Nirvana songs. Maybe because it isn't a Nirvana song.

"Where did you sleep last night" is the Nirvana Leadbelly cover.

Yes, but the Leadbelly song is called "In the pines".
Actually the Nirvana version is called "Where did you sleep last night? (In the pines)" on the single version.
PS: I took the information from the internet. I don't own every Nirvana single!

I don't know about a single of that song, but on the Unplugged CD it's just called Where did you sleep last night.

Review - Tre's mix: faves: Clor - Love & Pain, Pavement, Raveonettes least faves: REM - First We Take Manhattan, RH - A Reminder, Maximo Park You managed to include tracks by Radiohead and REM that I didn't hate. That's definitely a good point. In fact I enjoy all the songs on this CD and it's getting repetitive play at work and at home. Among the ones I like least, I find Maximo Park very unoriginal and I wonder why Warp signed them. It's not like I hate the song, but I don't find it much appeal. And I have a problem with the Eels song; I think I like this band but I've listened to your mix a dozen times at least and I still have no idea of what this song sounds like. It's the song that doesn't exist. I don't know if it's good or bad, that's a weird sensation. Now with the good things: I can't get Love & Pain out of my head, it's so catchy, I love it. I already knew and loved Shady Lane, plus it's from my favorite Pavement album. The Raveonettes and Sons & Daughters are great too (the latter is on my wishlist), the Magic Numbers also. But the definitive highlight is Clor. Looks like they have an album but it hasn't been released in France yet, I'll wait for it eagerly.

You know, these backhanded compliments...they just make me chuckle. Denis, I'm gonna go put on some REM now. And I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of it, as always.

Review - CrispyWater's mix: Faves: Mike Watt, Pere Ubu, Leo.fx, Banyan, Desmond Dekker, The Fall, J Richman Least faves: Jorane, Mr Bungle Your mix is my fave of the batch, ex-aequo with K's (I'm not saying I don't like the others!). A couple of things I already knew (Television, Soul Coughing, Kid Koala, Richman...), some others I knew by name but was quite sure I would like (Pere Ubu, Desmond Dekker, The Fall), and a bunch of other cool things. And the ones I like least, well, I still liked them anyway... Crazy stuff but still pleasant to listen to, that's what I love.

Okay, I think it's time for some half-assed reviews.
From Broken Face's mix, I like "Grave Digger Blues," "Idaho," and "Secretarial." That country-type stuff is pretty cool, and I think "Secretarial" is the first Carl Newman solo song that I've really enjoyed (although I admittedly haven't listened to any others in a while).
I liked Toby's Dinner Party Mix much more than I thought I would. "Le Plus Beau Du Quartier," "E.V.A.," and "Due To Lamplooking" are pretty cool. So is the Future Bible Heroes song, but then, the coolness of anything involving Stephin Merritt generally goes without saying. From Toby's regular mix, "The Monk At The Disco" is pretty good, even though the lead singer's voice is a little annoying. "Rockaway Beach" is a catchy song, as is "Rad."
From Crispy Water's mix, I like the Jonathan Richman song. I'd heard it before, but I still liked hearing it on the mix. I probably need to check out more stuff by the famed Man Who Was Too Loud.
On Tre's, I liked "Apply Some Pressure" and "Shady Lane," the latter of which is the only Pavement song I've had a strong positive reaction to. My reaction to most of their songs that I've heard are more along the lines of, "Meh, that's kinda cute." By the way, Tre, do you have a list of all the artists on your mix?
HPM's was probably my favorite mix this time around. I liked "The Rest Will Follow." On "Sukkafish," the vocals are kind of weird, but there's something about the song that appeals to me anyway. I like the backing vocals on "Honey." The violin on "Vegetarian Restaurant" is pretty cool, and the song is good anyway. The chorus on "Bullets" tends to get stuck in my head. I also like the Rilo Kiley song. The build-up on it is a nice touch. Oh, the New Pornographers song is great, but I already knew that.
Getting to LBF's CD, I thought the Stephen Brodsky song was kind of catchy. I also liked the Elliot Smith track; I'm not all that familiar with him, but I've liked most of his work that I've heard. I liked the use of background sounds on "Something Wrong," and "Ain't No Grave" is pretty cool.
On Xavier's mix, the one that stuck out for me was the Neutral Milk Hotel track. I think it's a pretty cool song, but I don't like the lead vocal so much.
Nothing on Nicole's mix really jumped out at me, but it was pretty cool overall.
Let me just say that getting all these mixes at once was a bit overwhelming. As much as I enjoyed them, it was just too much to digest at one time.

Thanks Nathan.
OK I have the following mixes so far:
Surfer Kitty Kiki Brian VoVat Toba Whore LBF Shine
And another with no name on it. It does have "....he devines in his lucid pureness" on it though. Who's is that?
I also have one that is completely blank. It starts off with an EMO sounding song but I have no idea how I am meant to know who it is from.
EDIT: OK, it has Gomez as track 3.

Aha, HPM, I would not be surprised at all if the one that says "he divines in his lucid pureness" came from me. Honestly, I can't remember what I wrote on all of them - is the song list on a sheet from a bingo hall notepad?
EDIT - I didn't even do the writing for all of them, had a short time frame so recruited some help. That just sounds like something which might have made it on there.

Well, here we go...Denis, the other one's on the way, but the following is for the one you made specifically for this mix:
The first several songs are a bit derivative in some ways, but each one of them has just enough dirt to keep me interested. Lucie Anna was a bit shy of wonderful, but the next couple are enjoyable – this is the first Sludgefeast song I’ve heard, but it just seems to have Stooges fingerprints all over it. The Guitar Wolf song had me laughing hard in a good way, they sound like they just don’t give a shit. Always happy to hear a little Wire. I’ve never wanted to enjoy Blondie for some reason, but the song you chose – particularly considering what surrounds it – got a little bit of finger tapping. Then that Angola song…I love the way it’s cobbled together. The only thing that bothers me is the manufactured feel of so many of the sounds. Some part of me just wants to feel like we can still express those feelings without machines, I’d really like to hear it reworked with just vocals and percussion. I noticed it was a remix, perhaps the original was more what I envisioned? Just as Swamp Thing was starting to get old, along came the accordion to make everything better again. The Plastikman tune was a real standout for me, always love understated beats. Also, you selected one of my very favourite Devo recordings; the first time I heard it I thought that was the greatest thing I’d ever heard, and it will always stick out as a special work from a band that I discovered at an important time in the expansion of my musical tastebuds. It seems as though that Waitresses song is a running joke between some of the participants in our exchange; sorry, but I can't understand why. It just puts me to sleep. Actually, I think if I were to listen to it a lot it would probably drive me stupid. Good thing it’s followed up by Daniel Johnston, whose life I consider one of the most interesting of which I’ve heard. His songs just sound so emotional, and some get on my nerves, but this one’s not bad. Geraldine Fibbers and Carla Bozulich are two names that I’ve been meaning to familiarize myself with for over a year now, and I liked both these songs in rather different ways. The last two tracks are pretty sweet as well, but I think I would have switched the order.

I'm not questioning that it was sent, it just hasn't arrived and I don't want you to think I'm simply ignoring it. Like you, I had a bit of trouble with trying to wade through so many at once.
As for FTP, I'm out of town for the next couple weeks so I don't really have access to anything like that. I could call home and see if a friend could do it for me, if that's okay with the supplier. Certainly quicker and easier than resending.
So if Brian's going to FTP this stuff, may I ask if it's okay to get someone else involved?

Oh, sorry, Denis! From yours, I like the opening track, the Devo song, and "Animal In Every Corner." On the other hand, I'm not all that fond of the Daniel Johnston song.

Is this where I confess I haven't had time to listen to all of them let alone write reviews! I will though, I have the final bit of my course to finish and then I have to move house and then I promise to devote a day to listening to them all and writing a little review.
Vovat: I do have the artist list somewhere but I can't remember it off the top of my head will get back to you.
The pavement song wasn't supposed to be on there, it was supposed to be dEUS - little arithmetics but my pc broke and.. long winded explanation
I don't think I was trying to be very impressive with this mix, I think it was just supposed to be a bunch of songs that fit nicely together. I apologise for the minimal packaging, but hope you all liked the wrapping! I was well proud of that. Hurrah for new scientist!

Thanks Nathan and Daniel. I guess I'll make public apologies for the Waitresses song... To my defence: 1) I had no idea the song was known in the USA. I thought it only existed on some obscure compilation; and 2) I genuinely like it! Maybe the lyrics are silly but I never pay attention to the lyrics unless I have them printed in front of me. I like the brass, for some reason it reminds me of a Muppets song or something (although I've never actually heard any Muppets song). Oh well... I bet Whore likes it at least. About Cesaria Evora: I don't know the original song. The interesting thing to me was the fact that it was remixed by my fave electronic artist ever. Carla Bozulich, if you're a Mike Watt fan you should have heard her on the Ball-Hog or Tugboat album, she sings on a couple of tunes. Last thing: I don't know the meaning of "derivative" and "a bit shy of wonderful" but I suspect it's a bad thing, right?

True. I like it. I think there is a personality in her voice.
As Denis said, I usually don't pay attention to the lyrics. Musically speaking, it's a good song.

I know the songs Carla Bozulich sings on that album, but that's about all I've heard from her. I know Mike Watt praises her quite consistently, and that's probably why I've been interested.
Derivative - I meant they sound like a lot of other stuff; not terribly original. It's one of those words people seem to use when they want to sound smart or politely arrogant. I still liked these songs, but there was nothing about them that made me feel I was missing out by not knowing the bands.
A bit shy of wonderful - It's more bad than good, yes, but if I really disliked it I would have used much stronger words.
I have to keep in mind that not everyone I'm addressing is a native English speaker. It's easy to forget sometimes, especially with someone like you because I've seen people who know only English and can't write as well as you. I really respect people who can do it; I have very limited skills in several other languages and although I've heard a million times that using them is the only way to improve I just get too intimidated. Even earlier today, I was trying to read a very simple piece of French and it caused me difficulty.
Anyway, if all goes as planned I should have two or three more write-ups posted by Thursday.

Both songs by Carla Bozulich on my mix are covers, so maybe it's not the most representative of what she does. The GF are generally heavier than this. There are a bunch of mp3 on her website:
