By the way, do you know what I've found at a store this morning? A Carrefour, actually: A magazine called 'Reggaeton'. I was only passing by, but I had to get into to check it out. I couldn't believe it.

Mix: Kathryn's
Favourite tracks: Under the Milky Way Tonight - The Church - took me back many years, loved it to bits then, love it to bits now. Forbidden City - Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros, don't know what it is about this one, but it catches my ear every time (the other Joe Strummer track I initially hated, but it's now grown on me). I already knew the CVB tracks (I wonder who from ) Sugar - A Good Idea (which flows beautifully into the CVB track in my opinion). Not a single track that I skip on this which is exceptional considering the presence of R.E.M. and my prejudices towards them.

What's with the hatin' on REM, people? I don't get it.
-------- Mix: Crispy Water
Comments: Tons of old favorites. Nice to see Canada represented (No Means No, Kid Koala). Been meaning to check out Banyan, so it was good to do so finally. Hadn't heard Desmond Dekker in forever, put a smile on my face.
Pls. explain the intriguing note scribbled on the tracklist: "I couldn't just say it with her mom right there."

i truly believe that if the first REM song you remember you heard on Top 40 Radio, you hate REM. if the first REM song you remember you heard from a friend or on college radio, you love REM. its all about when you heard them
i was like 9 when 'losing my religion' was all over the radio and i hated it then and i hate it even more now.

You make a good point, Brian. I first heard them in college, when Chronic Town came out, and dug them instantly. (Losing my religion is one of my least favorite REM songs.)

I’ve been travelling a lot for work of late, so I haven’t been keeping up with this quite as much as I’d like. Six or seven of your collections were at my home last time I was there, and a couple more have since arrived; I’ll begin posting comments on those tomorrow. For the time being, here is my tracklist and apologia:
1. Banyan – A Million Little Laughs: One of my favourite groups, kind of a side project for all involved, spearheaded by Stephen Perkins. Mike Watt is the principal sidekick, and this tune is a reworking of a melody I think he’s toyed with for a few years. 2. Holger Czukay & U-She – Cruise: Something newish from a key Can figure and I’ve never heard of U-She before. Available on the bonus disc packaged with the excellent Can double DVD. 3. Desmond Dekker – Licking Stick: Just a solid song from a solid singer. I love the way this man plays with his voice, and I still dream that one day I’ll get to see him play live. 4. Dufus – Radiation: One of the few new bands that truly excites me. I could have picked nearly any one of their songs and felt comfortable throwing it on here. Read around http://www.dufus.tv and just see how much Seth Faergolzia has going on. 5. Evergreen – Whip Cream Bottle: A brief project featuring Slint and Breeders members from the mid-‘90s; they did a reunion show last year just like everyone else. 6. The Fall – Just Step Sideways: Most of you know who this band is, just chose a solid tune in the hopes I could make you smile. 7. Faust – Hurricane: If I had time travel mastered, I would send myself back to Germany in the early ‘70s and work my way into their circle. Look ‘em up even if you don’t like this, they’ve done a bit of manything, and the band's story is one of the most interesting in rock music. 8. Jorane – Battayum 2: One of my favourite tunes from an exceptional Canadian cellist/vocalist. I saw her live a few months ago and it fully blew me away. 9. Kid Koala – Skanky Panky: My discs were already prepared by the time I realized this was on Toby’s mix too. Hopefully that doesn’t ruin your day. 10. Leo.fx – (Unkown title): Don’t tell them, I wasn’t supposed to share the demo from our local theremin/didgeridoo (!) duo. 11. Mr. Bungle – Ars Moriendi: Nobody seems to give this band enough credit; those who do don’t seem to give this song its due either. 12. Need New Body – Shark Attack: One of my favourite discoveries of the past year, a delightfully bizarre and playful crew. I think they’re from Chicago. 13. Nomeansno – Two Lips, Two Lungs, One Tongue: They’re capable of much better, but this song is good anyway and there was space for it on the disc. 14. Pere Ubu – Cloud 149: This song – this band before the mid-‘80s – will never stop making me smile contentedly. 15. Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers – Pablo Picasso: Just because sometimes people forget how good J-Rich was even before he unplugged. 16. The Slackers – Shankbön: One of my all-time boners was forgetting they were coming to town one particular Sunday evening. Had my ticket and everything, the ol’ brain just slips sometimes. 17. Soul Coughing – Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago?: More than likely the only pop song that will ever feature a squeaky door sample as the lead instrument. 18. Syzygys – Such A Face?: Very interesting tune from some of John Zorn’s Japanese disciples, taken from a live album recorded in 1989. 19. Television – Friction: Somehow I’d never heard Marquee Moon before about four months ago. 20. TV On The Radio – Say You Do: Not sure what it is about these guys, but I can’t get enough of them. Wait, maybe I do know what it is; they're witty, playful, well-versed…I have nothing but praise for them. 21. Mike Watt & The Secondmen – Boilin’ Blazes: The opening cut from Watt’s latest work, I thought it fit well as a closer here.
Like I said, I’ll start posting reviews of your mixes tomorrow. Some of what I've heard has really seized my attention, and I've got preliminary notes sitting back at my hotel that I'll touch up and finish tonight. My life’s just been far too busy to give music due attention lately, I apologize.

I'm almost as old as you and I heard as you 'Losing my religion' on the radio. All the time. It's still one of my favourites. Number 3 of all time in my last rank.
'Automatic' was the first vinyl I bought.
But I understand that you don't get them.

Kathryn: Just as you said my disc had a number of old favourites for you, I issue the same message to you. I’ve always been a huge Hüsker Dü fan, but never really gave myself a chance to check out Bob Mould or Sugar stuff. I now realize it should have happened long ago. Paralyzed is an excellent song, as is Dreaming, I Am. There’s this one Sugar disc (Pure Sugar, maybe?) that I see in used racks all the time – if I’ve got the title right, would this be a good one to snatch up? That opening track by The Smithereens caught my ear as well, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of them before. Are they still around? Quite like both Strummer tunes as well; I’ve got a friend who feels for him the way I do for Frank Black, and hearing these songs again was a reminder that I’ve got to get my buddy to fully convert me to the Mescaleros stuff. Hadn’t heard that Ramones cover or Holiday in Cambodia for awhile, so those put a smile on my face. Although I’ve never listened to much Bowie, that’s who I think of every time I hear that Tin Machine song. Not my favourite, but it’s not a stinker either. Camper Van Beethoven played my hometown last year (it might have been a double bill with Cracker or am I nuts?); I hadn’t heard much of their stuff at the time, but now I’m kicking myself for not going. Good pick on the GBV song as well, I can’t profess familiarity with all his/their songs but I’m always glad to hear them. All in all, quite a satisfactory disc.

Toby: No. 3: The first couple songs didn’t really do a lot for me. The Smoosh song with the little kid going off makes me giggle. I’d like to know how old that recording is. The 6ths song was a little monotonous for me, but I must admit I haven’t taken the time to pay attention to the words yet, maybe they’re really good. Quite enjoy the Basement Jaxx tune, the more I hear of them the more I want to like them. Don’t think I’ll ever be a fan of Whale, but at least it sounds like they enjoy themselves. I listened to this disc at home with a couple of friends and they remembered Whale as a joke band that had a novelty hit back in the early ‘90s. Cool Goldfrapp tune, they’ve got a pretty decent vibe going. Peaches always makes me laugh; I’m not always sure if it’s with or at her, but I like the song you picked. The Creeps is catchy at the start, but I think if I were them I would have changed the tempo for a minute then come back to the original beat. I remember seeing The Bran Flakes mentioned somewhere, but never heard them before. The song on your disc is pretty cool anyway. The next one that seized me enough to comment on was the Electrocute tune. I don’t think I’d buy the disc or anything, but it’s a fun enough track. Anyone who puts They Might Be Giants on a mix CD is going to get at least a tip of the cap from me. The ones which follow it are good ones to wind down with. In one sentence, I describe this disc as one I wouldn’t shit my pants over, but a very good choice for a long drive – I’ve tried it so I know that’s true.
No. 4: Cheesy opening. Beyond cheesy opening. Good thing you made up for it with that sweet Royksopp tune. Quite dig the Theme From Slaying Beauty as well. Could have done without the Future Bible Heroes track. Never listened to Henry Mancini before, but that’s an excellent tune, one of my favourites from this disc. Duplicate the previous sentence and double the emphasis for the next track, though I have heard Perrey before. That Mono track is stunning, where are they from and are they still active? Seeing the name The Nabokov Project got me excited (favourite author) before even hearing it, but maybe I was hoping for too much. The Carla Bruni song makes up for it. If you’ve heard my disc yet you know I love that Kid Koala track, but I think the one which follows is even better. Those guitars are so almost-ugly I have to appreciate them. Stereolab is a name I’ve seen around and wanted to check out, but this track didn’t exactly make my heart race. Also never heard the Avalanches before, and I think if I don’t hear something better next time I won’t bother exploring them. Like the REM cut at the end, I’m kind of an in-betweener when it comes to them.
To conclude with as much brevity as I can muster, I will say by and large I quite enjoyed your selections.

Brian: Any disc that opens with Beat Happening scores an automatic point with me. The first three songs all made me wiggle my ears. This is the first Ted Leo song where his voice hasn’t kind of grated on me – not that the songs have been bad, it’s just something about his voice. Solid Aphex Twin track, definitely a group I have to allot more time. Can’t say enough good things about Mike Watt, glad to see him on there. One of my favourite Guided By Voices tunes. When I was in junior high school, I thought the first Foo Fighters album was the greatest thing I’d ever hear, so a different version of Floaty is interesting to hear. Did this come from a BBC session of that era? I’d be very interested in hearing more; I’ve not been able to get very excited about much that band has done in the last few years, but back then I think they were one of the best bands we’ll ever see. My biggest thumbs down goes to that tune by The Special Goodness. Even the band’s name makes me cringe. The next few were all noteworthy, particularly the Stevie Wonder selection. Couldn’t agree more with your assessment of The Bad Plus’ live performance; I was lucky enough to see them open for the Pixies in Vancouver last fall and it was positively incredible. The Dan Byrk song is cool too, ditto for the Sufjan Stevens cut – the first time I’ve felt that way about one of his songs. After that I think I just let the songs play because the disc is in there. Solid disc though, it should get fairly regular play for me.

Shineoftheever: Both Redskins tracks really got me going. The Power is Yours is a good song; at first the sax didn’t seem appropriate, but after a couple of listens it’s essential. Kick Over the Statues is just great, easily one of my favourite songs off any of these discs. The Billy Bragg songs were both good to hear. Not all that familiar with his stuff, but usually glad to hear it. One to Three really gets under my skin, I think it’s the vocals. Small Stakes is an excellent song, very glad to hear it – or any Spoon - on here. Do What You Want makes me giggle with that goofy little lead at the start. If the drumming were just a wee bit more interesting I think I could really get into Crazy Beat. The Billy Idol track is a little too much like too many other songs for me to get excited about. Hearing the opening of Plowed made my heart race big time; I used to be a huge Sponge fan, Wax Ecstatic was my favourite song for a long while way back when. Very pleased to hear PJ Harvey in there: Good Fortune is very catchy, I always catch my toes tapping halfway through that one. The Mess We’re In absolutely knocked my shoulders straight, that’s just an unreal track. Some of the other songs were a little too…poppy maybe? Something about some of the tracks on your disc just turned me off – I know I can be quite fast to hit the button if I think the vocal performance is too weepy. This was definitely how I felt about a few songs here, which probably isn’t the best way to assess them, but it’s my way. The tracks I like, though, are very good. As stated above, you put on a couple that certainly rank among my favourites.
