Pixies, Bright Eyes Head Newport Folk Lineup
Rob Kleckner reports:
Q: What do Pixies, Elvis Costello, and Bright Eyes have in common?

A: Duhhhh, they're all sharing the bill at this year's Newport Folk Fest in Rhode Island!

This year's festival features an assortment of folk acts of all kinds, the most of exciting of which is a Pixies acoustic set (!). Also on the bill are Bright Eyes, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), M. Ward, and a host of others. The festival, sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts (which seems to do a lot of sponsoring in Rhode Island), has been in existence since the 60s and essentially consumes the town of Newport, Rhose Island for three days in August.

One great thing about Newport Folk is that it encourages its performers to play together. Jim James and Emmylou Harris, who both appear on Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, are expected to perform with Conor Oberst, as well as his former collaborator M. Ward.

There are also a number of jambandy-type groups you may or may not be interested in. But if you dig the above artists, it might be worth your while to fight your way through the thick hordes of hippies. Tickets are on sale now and available through Ticketweb.

Apologies if posted before, I know some of you tend to think its a terrible crime!

This would be an excellent opportunity for them to pull out Ana and Havalina + rip through some come on pilgrim and surfer rosa stuff. Lucky bastards....

I don't buy it. Remember the so-called B-side/rarities shows? I predict maybe two or three acoustic songs, but then again, even that would be a blast. As far as I know, Pixies have never ever played even one acoustic song during concerts... Could someone elaborate?

Has anyone heard the boot from 1991 at McCabe's, where it's just Frank and Joey playing Pixies songs acoustically? I believe it was on the fb.net ftp site. Anyway, if you guys get the same thing at Newport, you're gonna get a blast!

i presume they mean bass, drums, and two acoustic guitars.
maybe joey with some little effects, but definately FB acoustic.

their repertoire is set up nicely for this type of gig, and i for one think this will be one of the best things to come out of the reunion. Now if i watched Mtv, i would love for a Pixies Unplugged. But i don't.

yeah, a Pixies unplugged would be sweet! I wonder how some of their songs would translate.

Acoustic tame anyone?

The Mac Cabe's show wasn't acoustic, but electric...

And I don't think they will reharse "new songs" like Ana or Havalina (nor Letter To Memphis, etc... ).

Denis?

This is of concern, since you were kind enough to promise me said show.

Can you clarify?

Morning Carl, would your query to Kathryn "kathryn, your in Ireland?" possibly be in reference to the picture of FB&TheC's standing in the shadows of that bridge?...If so, my educated and based on experience guess would be that those boys are in Brooklyn, NY, standing in the shadows of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (I-278) which connects Brooklyn to Staten Island.

So, what do ya say Kathryn, am I right or is Carl's wishful thinking correct?

Edit:[On second thought, I'm having some 2nd thoughts and perhaps my guess is a little wishful thinking, but that little paved walkway sure looks familiar. The only problem I can see is that Staten Island doesn't have hills the size of those in your picture, or at least not that I recall. So, spare us the suspense...wake up and ID the location of that most coolest pic.]

No shit, your land of long gone? http://nycroads.com/crossings/pulaski/

Hey danjersey, ya ever heard of Moonachie, NJ. I spent many a day driving load after load of only the best imported cheese from our warehouse in Mooachie over the GW Bridge and into the 5 Boros and Long Island. So where in the Beautiful Garden State are you from?

I'll defer to your experience as a hometown boy...I was young and fresh out of Tennessee, and I had 'em eating out of my hand with that southern accent of mine...but I didn't stay in one place too long, and I sure didn't want to have to worry about those Italian and Irish big, protective families...In fact, "The Sopranos" ain't no fairy tale, and I sure wouldn't want to fuck with that...

Crap, I thought this turned into the Springsteen forum for a sec.

Since I found out about the acoustic set, I've been staying up nights trying to
imagine/guess which songs they'll do.

Ohhhh, Ok Carl, I see, I just checked her profile and sure enough, Lady Kathryn appears to be dreaming and wishing she was in the Emerald Isle! I don't blame her, maybe I'll get there one of these days.

yep Golden Gate, look like it's from the DITS photo session. things are good here out west. Floop, how many Wiltern shows did you make it to?

I've seen Frank play solo acoustic several times and it kicked ass (Tame was great). I'd wager he'd sound even better with backup.
