Just a bit of topic but on the subject of special pixies shows... I think that Ireland got the pick of the draw when it came to the Pixies European gigs - they are playing their own stadium gig at Lansdowne Rd football stadium, I don't think I saw any European date that they were not playing as part of a festival... which is great, and it makes up for last year where they were the support slot for the RHCP at an altogether too big a gig.... to say I’m delighted is an understatement... |

A bit trivial, but this is the same festival that Bob Dylan caused a scandal and first performed with an electric guitar. |

Fbf, I wasn't really referring to the Newport festival - that sounds great, it would be a totally different atmosphere to your run of the mill rock one, I was more commenting off topic that in theory the pixies Irish gig looks likes the best European gig by a Kilometre! |

Same city (different festival) that Paul Gonsalves (with Duke Ellington's band) almost caused a riot with his 7 minute alto sax solo.

I felt bad feeling the urge to stereotype, but I've never seen anything remotely close to my kind of music. So I was wondering if there were any truck drivers out there who listened to Frank Black and the Pixies. I guess this sort of answers it. Thanks.

Hey prozacrat, yeah, my truck-driving days predate the PIXIES and Frank Black putting out music days. But if I was still riding the road I'd be listening to 'em.
One of my favorite driving songs is "If it takes all night" from DITS, which as we all know, is a song about French truck-drivers.

Hey all you lucky fb.netters attending the Newport show today, wish I could join you, but nobody invited me and I guess I wasn't the grand prize winner for the all-expenses paid trip to the show with free tickets, backstage passes, and an invitation to a clam bake with the band after the show...oh well, have fun without me!

almost midnight saturday just got back to my friend's house after the show. brian and i were right by kim the whole time. will post some pix and the setlist in a day or so. brian scored kim's setlist copy. a fun night, a fun show, loud too. no debaser, though.
basically they did acoustic versions of most of the songs they did in the 2004 part of the reunion (opened with bone machine, closed with gigantic). several other songs (Ana, Havalina, Stormy Weather, etc.) would have been better choices for an acoustic set.
still, it was fun. but it's time for them to plug in again.

The Pixies get folky and unplug but remain noisy and obnoxious
Forty years ago, a young musical maverick called Bob Dylan stunned Newport Folk Festival fans with his first-ever performance wielding an electric guitar. In an about-turn on that famous plug-in, alternative rock originators The Pixies headlined 2005's Newport folk bash last night with an acoustic set. The Boston-formed band's reputation was built on punkish detachment, not singer-songwriter investment. Screaming feedback and obscure lyrics set the Pixies up for cult status, not mainstream appeal. Until the legend overtook them and the band re-formed last year finding greater popularity and a new lease of life.
But why play Newport? In the absence of a new Pixies studio CD, what better than an acoustic performance disc? And what about a DVD too? Newport's audience didnt seem too bothered. There was much to enjoy on three stages over two full days of music. Still, Sunday's lineup included more crossover artists (Elvis Costello, Bright Eyes, M. Ward and My Morning Jacket's Jim James) among the dyed-in-the wool folkies and country music players. Saturday's musical feast began early with a haunting lunchtime set from Maine neo-blues folk artist Ray LaMontagne on the main stage; Chicago bluegrass band Jim and Jennie and The Pinetops, thrilling midafternoon on the Stringband stage; and young singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson kicking off the Borders stage with a pop twist. Thompson later joined his father, lauded British folk artist and Fairport Convention veteran Richard Thompson, on the main stage for Thompson Senior's Persuasion. Blurring folk and rock boundaries, Richard Thompson gave the rockers and the youngsters a run for their money, seamlessly moving from baroque English folk to punky blues, his hauntingly rich voice matched by his superb guitar playing, all of which he delivered with effortless grace. ``Hello, we're the Pixies. We're a rock band,'' said Kim Deal sweetly, leaving no room for any misunderstanding. Anyone expecting anything different, even in this stripped-down guise, was disappointed. Loud, obnoxious, and discordant, the songs - ``Bone Machine,'' ``Nimrod's Son,'' ``Caribou'' and more - bore the original rock intentions, but with the Pixies underlying pop sensibility and off-kilter lyrics highlighted. When someone in the audience suggested the Pixies should just jam, singer Frank Black laughed. ``We never jam,'' he said. ``But we'll be jamming next year when we play the jazz festival.'' Anything's possible. |

Newport fest brings in new folks By Daniel Gewertz Friday, August 5, 2005 - Updated: 11:35 AM EST
The Pixies? Bright Eyes? Elvis Costello? Is this any way to run a folk festival? The pop crossover programming of the famed Newport Folk Festival has raised folk fans' eyebrows before. But the 2005 fest is the most radical attempt yet to put a new twist on a long-lived event. For the Dunkin' Donuts Newport Folk Festival, risking the alienation of the dyed-in-the wool folk fan may be the only way to go. ``If we had to rely totally on the hard-core folk audience we would be very hard-pressed to keep it alive,'' said Bob Jones, longtime festival producer. The lineup this year represents an extension of an edgy crossover trend that's been growing for years. ``We've always been intrigued by a really large range of what might work at a folk festival,'' said Nalini Jones, Bob's daughter and the festival's co-booker. Acts such as the Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLachlan and even the Violent Femmes have graced the stage at Fort Adams State Park since 1990. In truth, this year's talent roster is jampacked with legitimate roots-folk acts, including Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Arlo Guthrie, Odetta, Del McCoury, Patty Griffin, Richard Thompson and Bela Fleck's new acoustic trio. And there's a whole stage devoted to young, roots-conscious string bands. But the Pixies? Is an unplugged indie rock band really appropriate fare for a folk fest? ``OK, the Pixies is more left of center than anything we've tried before,'' Jones said. ``All I can say is it's gonna be interesting to see what the hell they do.'' ``I don't know if the Pixies even know what they'll sound like,'' said Nalini. ``But if such a major act, never associated with folk music before, just gets it that folk is important, and they want to try to fit their music into Newport's context, how could that not be great for us?'' In the Newport programming choice that most directly appeals to youth, Bright Eyes appears on the same set with his friends M. Ward and Jim James, the latter of the rock band My Morning Jacket. Bright Eyes has been writing his own quirky versions of anti-war songs in the past year.
``Maybe it isn't folk, but it adds something intriguing to a lineup that already has lots of folk,'' said Nalini of this clearly trendy act. At the risk of alienating hard-core folk fans, the fest is after a new type of audience: music lovers attracted to folk but not defined by it. An unusual number of acts this year never have appeared at Newport. And though the lineup almost completely ignores the mainstream folk singer-songwriter set, the Joneses say they may be back next year.
``It's just how the booking broke,'' Nalini said. ``And we feel it's useful to shake things up and try something new.'' Both Joneses stress that Newport is a three-stage fest, so if you don't like Bright Eyes, you can catch Nashville's Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller or Old School Freight Train. The Pixies not your thing? Check out Peter Yarrow and his daughter Bethany. ``We wanted to do something very strong this year, and we've spent more money,'' Jones said. ``But we can't live off of our corporate subsidies. We need to do well, or we're in trouble.

How did you guys get so close? Did you have reserved seats, did you get there early, or did you muscle your way up front like some pushy, obnoxious, chick from Brooklyn?

You know the answer, CoffeeCan.
The earnest folkies who'd been parked there all day listening to Patti Griffiths (Griffin?) took one look at Broken Face and me and took off, leaving us plenty of room to dance right by Kim's feet.

Hey tobafett, well, I'm sure it is, but I was, in fact, referring to the "bright-color-clad-singing-and-sweating-Aussies-on-the-Disney-Channel". I thought it was a good way to emphasize my point that a day with Kathryn is worth a 26-hour drive and suffering through a "Wiggles" concert.
And, now that you mention it, I sure hope the day would be filled with Kathryn's wiggles and, to borrow from The Man's Honeycomb song, some of her figure-eighting.
Ok, I've said too much, I'm getting a little embarassed now, bye.
