So, I went to the supermarket on Sunday for few things, the total of which came to £16.72. Unusually for me, I paid in cash, (£20), but as the checkout girl's mind must have been elsewhere, she gave me £16.72 in change.
I noticed straight away, as I wasn't expecting notes in the change, and I was just about to say something, but stopped and got out of there pretty quickly. I'm sort of surprised at myself, as I usually point these kind of things out, but equally, I feel a bit justified as we spend hundreds of pounds a month in there.
So, am I a thief and moral void, or just a normal person. What would you have done?

It has been eating away at me. I'm trying the Catholic route and using the forum as a confessional.

Step away from the catholocism, the guilt never ever leaves! confessional is a lie! and that transubstantiation thing, what the hell is all that about huh?
I wouldn't feel too guilty about it, supermarkets over charge and can afford the odd slippage, spend the money on a nice thing for a loved one or buy a couple of big issues and feel good about it, see it as a gift from the supermarket. |

I have to admit I would have pointed it to her - and then beat myself up for being so stupid. I've actually done worse - e.g. returned unclaimed money (which I found coming out of an ATM I was about to use) to security, who undoubtedly split the sum between themselves, laughing at the sucker who brought it to them.
I just can't help it, it's one of the many crippling flaws in my character.

I would have pointed it out. When something like that happens I just do the right thing and hope karma will repay me.
Of course if I hadn't noticed until I was out of the store I would have just chalked that up to karma repaying me for some previous good deed. Kind of screwy logic now that I think about it. |

Do checkout girls have to cover shortfalls in the till, as that worries me a bit, cause then it's like taking her money, not the corporate behemoths. Also, although it's not my lookout, there may be personal consequences for her if she's done this a few times. Aaaargh, over analysis.
"gift from the supermarket".......I like that.

I deliberately didn't count the change until I got home so I could vaguely justify it to myself in that manner. After all, I could have given her £30 (even though the maths doesn't figure)

i've done both. walked & taken back...i'm afraid karma will catch up w/ me...
i walked out with extra stuff I'd forgotten to scan at the register (it's in that area under the cart--forgot it was there) so i unloaded all the other stuff, went back and paid for the stuff. twice in 2 weeks. the cashier guy said 'damn, that's honest of you--most people woulda walked'. i just answered 'karma, y'know' and left. |

LLamadance, this has been a delimna we've all faced in some form or another in our lives.
The last time this happened to me I was in a restaurant with my brother. When the bill came, I paid in cash. The change the waitress brought me was the change plus the amount of the bill! So essentially I was being paid to eat at this establishment! I immediatley felt the devil on one shoulder, and an angel on the other. As "the devil hath the power to assume a pleasing shape" (from Shakespeare) I listened to his trumpets and proceeded to leave the restaurant a richer man. Suddenly I was stopped by the waitress and the manager. I did my best to feign ignorance and returned the evil money. I was caught...even though I was never really guilty.
If I would have gone home with the money, pangs of guilt would have torn me asunder for a couple days. Thankfully, I was spared this.
This was 10 years ago. These days, I usually do the correct thing and point out another fellow persons mistake when situations like this occur. Perhaps it's a form of karma. I won't say I fully believe in or even understand the idea (ideal?) of karma, yet something exists that denotes an important scale of spiritual checks and balances.
This is just MY personal stance, mind you.
There are those that can get away with murder and never lose a wink of sleep. This doesn't neccessarily make them a bad person by the same token!
LLamadance, you have two choices that hinge on who YOU are...not how WE percieve you, but how you percieve your feelings:
You can keep the money and shut the hell up and get over it. Sometimes money is free.
OR
you can return it to the store and explain the mistake. Some people lose jobs over things like this.
I was alone...in my BIG BED

That sounds a bit harsh man, it's a forum, and I hoped the thread would mutate into a more general dicussion about the issue.
As for the other stuff, I've made my choice, I'll live with it. I guess what happened to you is what everyone fears in that instance.

No! I'm sorry! I didn't mean for it to be harsh...and I apologize for coming off harsh. I just meant to be black and white about the issue. I'm VERY sorry for having it seem I used the "shut the hell up" as a personal attack...that is far from what I meant it to be. Maybe not the best use of words. What I meant was that this is all up to YOU. It seemed you started this thread for advice based on a possible bad judgement you had made. I was just offering the 2 cents I had to give you for advice. I meant all the best in my heart. And what I've learned is that it is all up to the INDIVIDUAL facing these matters. We ultimately are alone when it comes to certain things...we are born alone, we die alone, and we lie, cheat, steal, forgive, and prosper alone. Luckily, though, we have the will to ask for guidance in these matters, and you have excersized that will. So, what I originally meant was it is all up to you. And you've made a decision. If you are happy with it, that's all that matters! No judgement from me, man! I've been there!

When i was in San Diego on vacation last year, i was at a Padres game and i was about to use the ATM (its the kind you swipe your card through, so you only need to swipe when you first walk up and then you can put your card away). The dude before me stepped away and it asked it "Would you like another transaction?" - So, i could've gone into his bank account and taken out $200 (the max on that machine @ one t ime). However, i just said "no thanks" and went about my own transaction. I don't feel bad about not stealing from some guy who probably wanted a beer.

No worries Transmarine, forums can be so one dimensional when you're trying to say something. I didn't really think that's what you meant, but didn't know what you meant. If that makes sense.
I've made my decision, you're right, and I wouldn't change it for something as small as this. Any residual guilt that exists will disappear. I guess I'm wondering why I did it, when I wouldn't usually. I don't expect the threads answers to help directly, but it's interesting (to me at least) to explore it.

i once found $200 on the floor in the check out line at the supermaket. i could never really know if it fell out of the register or if a customer dropped it. but, the right thing to do would probably have been to give it to the check out guy. which i didn't do.
the other day at my local bread store i was 50 cents short and they said to pay them next time. which i did today. i'm slowly building my karma back. |

In your defense, it's not your job to count the change at the store. Isn't it enough you have to drive there, prepare the list, walk around the store and find your items, work like a dog to acquire the money you supply to purchase the goods, take them home and use them to feed and support your family and prepare for the next venture to the store and on top of all that you have to count the fucking change too? Gimmie a break
