In all due respect, it IS your job to count your change at the store! If one is so paranoid of the meager wages one worked like a dog to aquire, I would think one would have counted it in one's head before you even got to the checkout! So many one's! I always count my change, as I think Llamadance probably does (it's what got him into this mess initially). I want my damn money! More often than not, uncaring and abused cashier's tend to short-change me...I swear to Frank, three out of five times I am given change it's horribly wrong. Once you get home and you realize you've been short-changed (and usually it's a matter of dollars, not cents...or, 'pounds' as you folks with the funny accents and secret agents say) it's harder to get the money back than if you discover it on the spot. Your money IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Well, if they give you too much, you simply give it back or walk away a little richer!

I think youre missing the point of my argument. And what's the point of offering a service that doesn't provide what it is founded on. If that's the case, why are there cashiers in the first place. Why don't we all make our own change?

I'll make sure I bring my math textbook, a slide rule and a calculator next time I go shopping.

The service of a cashier is not an offering. It's an expectation and a necessity of a money-giving public. And it's made up ironically of individuals of same public. And we do make our own change by counting what the cashier is expected to return to us. It would be silly to completely hand over your responsibility to another because fallible humans are fallible humans. But, as to address your question of why we arent literally making our own change? More and more these days we are seeing automated check-out lanes in stores...even banks. We scan the item ourselves, bag it ourselves, and then a machine completes the money transaction. I don't like these things (unless I am buying something embarrasing). Yes, the change has been, for me, 100% correct when I've used these. However, I know they are fallible too. But come on! These are a substitute for laziness...and ultimately they are taking jobs away from the public. Consumers should always deal with human customer service representatives...because they themselves off the clock are consumers. And they, like us, are going to make errors in math from time to time. It's a simple choice of reigning the situation by taking 10 seconds to clear it up by pointing it out, or pocketing it. I'd rather spend a minute with people to figure out the problem, than to go to ONE person in an automated store and attempt to solve an incorrect-change issue caused by a robot. And as much as I have really avoided the "make our own change" question you posed...due to the insanity of such an idea in this day, age, and culture...I am finding I can't hold back. Can you really convince me LBF, or any of us here, that this would work in our current structure of retail? To make our own change? To go behind a register ourselves, dip into the till, and make our own change?

No, I know it wouldn't work. My grandmother couldn't do it. I, myself, count my change and know how much I should have and receive in return. I just think for people like my 90 year old grandmother, she has every right to go to a store and shop and expect that if she provides enough money for the items she wants that she should expect to recieve the proper ammount of change without ever thinking twice about it. When you walk in the door of any store does it say on the front door "customer expected to be able to count their own change, if you get too little it's your own fault dumbass!"

if there was a sign on every door of every store stating that, then I would totally agree with you.

You're not allowed to shop here unless you can make your own change.

I've only seen those in Bars. And notice that sign doesn't say "for any reason" That sign is total bullshit, I've never seen it enforced except on drunk morons. You can't shop here, you're not white. See how far that gets you.

I've enforced it before! And on people who aren't drunk...just ridiculous people! And I've called the police to enforce that right! This was at a record store years ago. And more than once! It's not total crap. A business has every right, like a person, to say "okay, shut the hell up and get out of my face." And people will say, well that'll get you a lawsuit. I never saw a lawsuit. And as far as your stance goes, in my opinion, on the non-importance of counting your money owed to you because it's so inconveinient to shop anyway...use a credit card. Or, if money is an issue altogether, just do what I did as a college student. Eat as you walk through the store and don't pay. No coins pass hands!

Excuse me Miss, I was walking down the aisle and I started eating this box of cookies. It says 4 cookies, I ate 2 and there is only 1 left, so I am not paying for them. Oh yeah, Miss? Suck my balls.

hahahahahaha!!!!

no I meant bypass the cashier altogether! Go in and sneak a meal. Of course, you have to eat things like yogurt drinks and Hostess while you sneek about the aisles...veggies and fruit from produce. My fav was getting a couple pre-made sandwiches from the deli, putting them in my jacket, and asking for the key to the restroom. Once inside, dine away. However a public restroom is a far cry from a dining room. Nevertheless, the sandwiches were good. Just don't attempt to eat things you have to prepare first. A stuffed oven roasted turkey would take WAY too long and be very hard to conceal as you walk around the store. You can't try to make bacon either. The management would smell it and become suspicious. Plus, they would catch you immediatly if you tried to use their cooking appliances. Trust me...I know what I'm talking about. DONT I repeat DONT attempt to make KoolAid. First you would have to get a large pitcher on aisle 9, then traipse about until you find the aisle with sugar (I use 'traipse' because you may be in a store you are not familiar with). After the sugar, you will have to locate the KoolAid mix. This is now looking very funny to the cashiers. Now you've got three ingrediants for the punch, but you still need water. You cross back to aisle 18 to get bottled water. After hiding behind a Frito-Lay display to mix the punch, you discover you have no wooden spoon. You see how difficult it becomes? Stay AWAY from potential incidents like this! Or a chicken divan casserole. To much hassle Stick to easier foods like the one's mentioned above. If they catch you, you might as well forget about change for a while altogether!

I probably would have returned the money, if I'd known about it. If I didn't know that I'd received too much change until after I'd gotten back home or whatever, I probably wouldn't have bothered to return it, unless it was a LOT of money, or I knew I was going back there soon.
