Fans ready for Reading and Leeds Some 120,000 music fans are expected to attend the Reading and Leeds festivals which are taking place this weekend.
The Pixies, metal veterans Iron Maiden and the Foo Fighters will be headlining the twin shows, which run from Friday to Sunday.
The Killers and Razorlight will also grace the events at Little Johns Farm, Reading, and Bramham Park, Wetherby.
The Charlatans and shock rocker Marilyn Manson will also appear, along with Pete Doherty's band Babyshambles.
'Very excited'
Iron Maiden will be performing at the event for the first time in 23 years, while it is their only festival appearance in the UK this summer.
The band's leader singer Bruce Dickinson has said he is "very excited" to be returning to the event.
At Leeds, Iron Maiden will headline the first day of the festival on the Friday, Pixies will follow on Saturday and the Foo Fighters will close the event on Sunday.
The Pixies will headline the first day of Reading, while Foo Fighters will play on Sunday and Iron Maiden will close the event.
Aside from the main stage, a line-up of bands will be taking to the NME/Radio 1 stage, including Kasabian, US rock band the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Juliette and The Licks - the band featuring Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis.
A dance tent and comedy tent will be among the other attractions at both the Reading and Leeds venues.
Thousands of music fans are expected to set up camp on both festival sites for the duration of the weekend.
Police have warned campers to remain vigilant against thieves who may target the events. |

PIXIES BURY THE HATCHET AT READING
PIXIES’ BLACK FRANCIS and KIM DEAL buried the hatchet as they made a triumphant return to READING tonight (August 26) for the first leg of their CARLING WEEKEND double bill – 15 years after they first headlined the same stage.
The band, who reformed in 2004 after 13 years apart, stormed through a greatest hits set on the Main Stage that had the devotional crowd singing along to every word.
But, despite all the talk of a new album from the band, there were no new songs played. The set stuck roughly to the songs the band were playing on the first leg of their comeback tour last year, aside from ’Stormy Weather’ and ’The Sad Punk’.
Before the encore, frontman Black Francis and bassist Kim Deal, who fell out during the band’s initial incarnation, embraced, with Francis asking her: “How’s your cold Kim? Do you wanna do THE song? (referring to 1988 indie classic ’Gigantic’), with Deal replying: “I’m not sure how I feel.”
Francis replied: “Well, we’ll play one more and see how you feel.” The band then played ’Hey’ from 1989’s ’Doolittle’ before finishing with THE song, to utter hysteria from the devotional crowd.
The set was:
’U-Mass’ ’Head On’ ’I Bleed’ ’Crackity Jones’ ’Dead’ ’Bone Machine’ ’Debaser’ ’Tame’ ’Gouge Away’ ’Monkey Gone To Heaven’ ’Broken Face’ ’Isla De Encanta’ ’Something Against You’ ’Stormy Weather’ ’Planet Of Sound’ ’Caribou’ ’The Sad Punk’ ’Into The White’ ’The Holiday Song’ ’Nimrod’s Son’ ’Vamos’ ’Mr Grieves’ ’Here Comes Your Man’ ’Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf)’ ’In Heaven’/’Where Is My Mind?’
Encore:
’Hey’ ’Gigantic’
The early 90s American guitar revival continues on the Main Stage tomorrow (August 27) with the appearance of Dinosaur Jr. Pixies move on to Leeds tomorrow night.

Hey Man, so what do you know about this music festival...is it one big "happening" or what...music lovers camping out, non-stop music?

You know they do that Bonaroo festival in a small town south of Nashville, a bunch of young hippies camping out, sharing the love, jamming on three days of music...having not taken the time to research this myself, I'm picturing this Reading festival as being somewhat similar to Bonaroo, am I correct?

I've never been, but it's your-common-or-garden outdoor festival, I believe. I would have loved to have gone-darn it, they played Something Against You! (Which they did'nt play in Dublin.) |

Stupid NME. Anyone would think that Kim and Frank haven't been getting along all tour. The 'acrimony' in the band was largely hyped up by NME anyway. And why do they insist on calling him Black Francis? |

Yeah, the whole tabloid angle of them supposedly buring the hatchet...like they hav'nt been touring constantly since last year and have only now become good friends again! That's the NME for you! |

Music fans enjoy festival weekend The Reading and Leeds music festivals are taking place this weekend with 120,000 fans enjoying many of the world's top bands.
Headliners at the three-day twin shows are the Pixies, heavy metal veterans Iron Maiden and the Foo Fighters.
Marilyn Manson, The Coral and Kings of Leon are among the other highlights at the events, held at Little Johns Farm, Reading, and Bramham Park, Wetherby.
All the bands play at both venues during the weekend.
The main stage line-up also includes indie band Elbow, The Charlatans and veteran rocker Iggy Pop, backed by his band the Stooges.
Iron Maiden are performing at the event for the first time in 23 years, in their only UK summer festival appearance.
Away from the main stage, the headliners on the NME/BBC Radio 1 stage include Kasabian, The Tears, Babyshambles - fronted by ex-Libertines singer Pete Doherty - and Mercury Prize nominees Bloc Party.
Other acts include US rockers the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, acclaimed Canadian indie band The Arcade Fire and Juliette and The Licks - fronted by Hollywood actress Juliette Lewis.
Police said a total of 23 arrests had been made at the Reading Festival.
Half of the 260 crimes reported at the Berkshire event have been thefts from festival-goers' tents.
A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman said: "Offenders are simply unzipping tents and helping themselves as the occupants sleep."
She added that 65 drug offences had been recorded, mainly resulting in cautions for possessing cannabis and class-A drugs for personal use.

Ahhhhh, you da man Carl, once again all I have to do is check here at fb.net first for the latest Pixies/Frank news

My festival days are far behind me, but every June the hippies gather outside of Nashville for Bonnaroo. By the way, the locals love it, they make a lot of money and they enjoy the "young people" visiting their town. They're very hospitable hosts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonnaroo_Music_Festival "The Bonnaroo Music Festival, or Bonnaroo for short, is an annual rock festival, first held in 2002. The festival is held on a 600 (edit: 700, according to the promoters) acre (2.4 km²) farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee. The main attractions of the festival are the multiple stages of live music, featuring mostly jam bands (categorized as progressive fusion), but also including hip hop and other alternative music."
"In 2002, the festival was held June 21-23, and more than 70,000 fans attended. In 2003, the festival ran June 13-15, and 80,000 attended. In 2004, the festival ran June 11-13, and more than 90,000 people attended. In 2005 the festival ran from June 10-12, and more than 75,000 people attended."
"The 2004 festival had torrential rains, creating an incredibly large amount of mud. Many vehicles had to be towed out of the parking area."

Oh yeah and what about the line-up of acts at Reading and Leeds, Frank with his old band and Iggy Pop with his old band, not bad, huh! I also see that my home-boys, Kings of Leon, played there.

I got a message from a friend at leeds last night, said that Frank started in a smart suit but after a while went back to the checked shirt look. Apparantly though the crowd really dwindled for them, he said it was very bittersweet that they played an *amazing* show but had the smallest crowd he'd ever seen for a headlining act, even the killers pulled more people in. New indie-scenesters suck. |

I wept they were so good much to the distress of the lads next to me - different setlist to Reading and versions of songs I have never heard before but dear lord don't ask me which ones or what - I'm still recovering and may be some time.

it was an amazing show, great performances by all four. i watched from a medium distance. i overestimated my endurance capabilities and went to the front at the start of QOTSA. after all the moshing and mentalness during them and the killers, i worked my way back out so i could watch the Pixies and actually enjoy it rather than trying to stay standing.
they had some playful chat throughout, such as the encore chat that one of Carl's news items talks about. also, at one point frank was trying to say something to some roadie on the side of the stage, and then called him on stage (i think) to tell him. then kim asked what frank was saying and he said there was too much smoke and he wanted it cut down. kim made a joke about how he always gets what he wants or something... also, during the gig kim said something about this girl they met backstage who broke her neck, and kim put frank on the spot to say something, he was a bit embarrased but said he hoped she was ok, and told the crowd he gave her his email address to let him know how she does. during the outro to gigantic they all wished each other goodnight. awww
now, might aswell talk about some other highlights of reading:
THE ARCADE FIRE. absolutely amazing, top gig. managed to touch the lead singer when he tried to jump into the crowd :D futureheads bloc party (played a new song, pretty good) crowd surfed during both of them. saw plenty of other bands which i enjoyed but those were the ones where i knew nearly every song and thus enjoyed the most
the campsite. i went for the weekend last year but with just two friends and we were camping next to old people, and we didn't get drunk enough to have proper fun, not that it wasn't good. but this year, i only went with two friends and one of my friend's girlfriend, but some of her friends got wednesday passes and saved us a spot, so we ended up having a decent campsite shared with about 8 tents. we were quite a hotspot during the night, when we played Macarena and got everyone to do the dance. met a girl who was seeing the pixies on wednesday like me, and she took my number but then 5 seconds later she was getting off with this other welsh guy she was talking to. damn welsh. on friday night this random girl walked past our tents and tripped over one and passed out. it wasn't long before some of the younger immature people, ahem, started playing human buckaroo with her, putting rubbish and shit on her till she stirred. when she woke up she was totally wasted and was coming up with the most entertaining bullshit, such as her being literally 25x older than all of us, her dad owning the reading festival field and how he could eject us at any point. she kept repeating her name. even though she said it about 30 times i still can't remember - something like ella louise something something-with-the-word-gay-in-it something. she pointed out the gay thing. she was a lesbian. i ended up trying to have a serious conversation with her, and then she started telling me a man tried to have sex with her for drugs and that her brother killed himself at reading and that's why she comes every year. oh dear :/ fortunately she passed out again before it got too awkward! she kept passing in and out so we got the onsite medics to take her away. didn't see her again, hope she's ok! that probably wasn't very interesting to read.
anyway, good festival. mike, i emailed you my number to ring me, which you never did. i hope it was because you didn't see it in time rather than you not wanting to meet me :( i called out "homers pet monkey" a couple of times, but recieved no response

Despite having Access All Area passes and loitering outside the tourbus for far too long (and maybe calling out Frank, Kim, Joey, Dave more than once) sadly there was no backstage encounter/successful stalking. Only pic I have is of their tourbus.

I didn't see the Reading show - all I have to go on is the bliss that was their show on Saturday in Leeds. Dave fluffed the beginning of Gigantic which was their encore - but that was hardly a low point in their set - the banter between the band members was quite touching. And has anyone else ever noticed that Frank doesn't face the crowd for the entire length of Lady in the Radiator?

Hey PixieSteve, actually I prefer your campfire story rather than another review of the show, or another posting of the set list. I'd much rather read about the human drama, and it sounds like your campsite had plenty of it.

OH MY GOD were they good! That is easily the best performance I have seen/heard from them EVER. In fact it was the best festival perfomance by any band that I have seen.
Zub and I got pretty close, not too close but close enough that the sound was excellent (the sound on the main stage is a bit shit unless you get close in). The banter was really touching and the crowd were really into it. I remember one guy next to me screaming "I have waited all my life for this". I am sure Frank must have heard him.
I feel so sad now that it's all over again now for another year. I didn' think it could top last year's Reading but it did, and not just because the Pixies played.
Other highlights:
The Arcade Fire - This band are just perfect for festivals, lot's of big singalongs and plenty going onstage. I spoke to a lot of people who were massively impressed by them, many of them people who are normally into heavy rock music and crappy emo.
Nine Black Alps - They had the most impressive crowd reaction along with The Arcade Fire, Mylo and Pixies. I was really surprised by how many people came to see them at that time of the day, and by how well they were received. To be fair though, it was the best of the 5 performances I have seen by them already. It was touching to see a band I have been into since the very start, and often see around the city and the club I go to, going down so well with so many people from the rest of the country.
Sons & Daughters - Again, this was the bnest performance I have seen by this band. There is nobody else around like them at the moment. Their dark sound was quite a contrast to many of the other bands, but a really nice change.
The Go! Team - Amazing headline set (yet again) from the best party band in all the world. Played a fantastic new song too which bodes well for their innevitable world domination.
Mylo - I danced to more dance music this Reading than any other, but when dance music is this good, there is nothing better to dance to. Again the crowd went mental, as is often the case with major DJ sets. A great way to finish of the festival.
And now it is all over and I can only thank my lucky stars that I have the Pixies (supported by The Futureheads) tomorrow night, and then a week in cyprus the next day to help me get over it.
I still have serious come-down though. Nothing in the world compares to my weekend in Reading every year.
On a seperate note, it was really nice to meet Laura (Zub). She's a really nice girl and it's just a shame that she couldn't stay the whole weekend. One day I must be destined to meet a complete ass from this forum, because every single person I meet from here is really really cool. Just a shame that I never got this mysterious email that Steve was supposed to have sent me. Sounds like he had a blast and I would have liked to have taken him raving with me and my mates (you'd have pulled there for sure Steve ; ))
