So as not to make this a completely selfish thread: it's coming up to holiday season. Why don't you post where you're going on holiday, and maybe someone from our thriving little international community here will be able to offer some tips about how to get the best out of your time.

Me first then: I'm going to Nice on Monday, hopefully we'll get to travel around the Côte and Provence a little as well.

Is it okay if it has a picture of the Vitamin Barn on it?

This is why you learnt French? To find your way on the beaches of Nice.Fortunately there aren't any dassies.

I am planning a trip to the Namib desert in August

Wow. Gorgious. Seen from Europe, Namibia really looks like a rough diamond. Definitely a place to see.

I'll spend 2 weeks in the Vannes area (Southern Brittany), in August.

Wow, that looks pretty good, Wilhelm. If I'd have had maybe a couple more weeks in SA I'd like to have seen some of the Kalahari, maybe the flowers in Namaqualand as well.

And yeah, of course that's why I learnt French. All together now, bonjour mademoiselle...

Most of my friends insist on driving through to less skanky lodgings.
Did I mention the time I couldn't drive another mile (having hit
rush hour in the valley) and pulled into some fleabag motel and up to
the check-in counter (plastic flowers, day-old donut holes) waddles
this guy with only shorts on and he weighs, easily, 450 pounds?

I don't knock Barstow. You have no idea the number of nights I spent in remote places like it. Lakeside, Oregon. Rocky Ford, Colorado. Garden City, Kansas. Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Just to mention a few.

floop, I think it's OK to mention that a woman weighs 450 when she weighs 450.

frog, where in NM is Fort Sumner?

I've spent a lot of time in NM over the years and had never heard of it,
so it did prove your point that you travel to remote spots. Was it a dump?

Btw, Fort Sumner is by far not the remotest place I've seen in NM. Some places I visited there weren't even on my map

I don't love New Mexico - I adore it...
