Just got the new Sleater-Kinney CD yesterday "The Woods". I have been following them since they hit the scene, and have seen them live a few times (they put on a great live-show). They are pushing their sound in new directions (or at least trying to) with "The Woods." I have a feeling this is a spin you will either love or hate. Corin Tucker delivers the same distinctive vocal sound (which I admit I can get a bit tired of at times), but with some new nuances, and the dueling guitar action between Tucker and Weiss provides some nice soundscapes.
I am still disecting this one. Anyone else heard "the woods"?
I would be curious what others thought. |

This record absolutely slays. I'm not one to use this terminology, but really, it's the only word that applies. Dave Fridman does a GREAT job capturing a really raw, dark HUGE sound on this album. I loved One Beat, and I love that this record is totally different, while still retaining a very unique S-L sound. Awesome.
Nicole, you would love this (I think :]).

Listening to this (good thing I have a bunch of boring paperwork to do at my desk today)I can tell you already that I am totally bummed we couldn't make it to one of their two shows in Portland last week. This new album would just be AMAZING live (as I actually think SK sound way better live). So far this it is not sounding like anything that has come out this year. Quite refreshing as I am (no offensive to anyone) really tried of the Interpol and Bloc Party sounds lately. I am digging "The Fox." "Rollercoaster" is a great tune. Don't know how to describe it (I am far from a good writer I admit). It has great build. "What's Mine is Yours" has some of the best guitar action. Great distortion toward the end that would make Jimi proud. They have really matured as musicians. Very bold moves musically they are making. I would not have a problem recommending this. Go get it!!!
Oh wait...just got to the last song. Oh man, great intro!
Yeah...go get it!!! |

I haven't heard the new album but I am looking forward to seeing them live at some point this year. It does look like it have to be at Reading Festival though (which means I have to miss The Arcade Fire) 'cos I don't think any of my mate's want to come and see them in Manchester.
I guess floop WAS right!

I saw them 6 or 7 years ago at the black cat in DC (I think that's moved again?)... it was an awesome show and they were great, I really liked them. So I only had the 1st 2 cds, and I haven't gotten one since. So I guess this is worth checking out? I've been wanting to buy a new cd for a long time.
Is it all loud and aggressive like the old ones? I can't handle too much of that anymore
I think my favorite song is Jenny

I really like this CD so far, but I wouldn't want you to make a purchase you hated or regretted. I don't think "The Woods" is quite as loud and aggressive as their older stuff. But there certainly isn't any ballads (in the traditional sense) or anything on the CD. I would say it is still loud. Not sure if they have soundclips on their website, but if you are unsure...I would say check those out first.

I wouldn't say that Sleater-Kinney are that loud or aggressive anyway.

I didn't know else to describe it. It's just a lot of fast paced punkish with lots of dissonance and abrasive vocals. I may be wrong but that's how I describe it
I defintely favor their slower songs, or the slower parts to their songs
... It was the like the First time I ever tried Cheetos. And I fuckin love Bambi.
Because I defintely think she (the main one) has a really pretty voice... when it's not yelling at me |

Maybe you should check out their last record LBF, One Beat, it's terrific. And perhaps more in line with what you're looking for.

I think I must listen to them again, I've only listened to one song, One Beat, and I like the sound of it, but her voice, I just can't get into it...
I'd comment but I'll hold my tongue |

I'm really digging certain parts of this album but on a whole it isn't setting my world on fire. The vocals definately start to wear thing about half way through, I mentioned that quite a bit the other day when me and my cousin tried to listen to it all the way through. For new records though I once again have to recommend the new Common "Be", just great stuff.

I've been so poor lately I haven't been able to get this yet, but it will be one of my first purchases after payday. I love SK and I am very excited about this!
Thanks for posting about it, mosleyk.

Still can't get on them, I've listened to some songs from this album, but I can't, at least right now. It's strange, since speedy has an impecable musical taste!

wow they were kick ass, i kept my back to the tv most of the time ( this screen here is a jealous bitch)because one song set ups like that are crap, it's all about camera movement, so i listened instead and really dug there tune. thanks
well now, if you want to talk about pizza? i'd say jersey hands down same with bagels, it's the water. really, the five boroughs know, ya gotta go west.

That's what I've heard, it's the water. Really. Fuckin makes me hungry.
Yeah, SK, that was really good. I saw them 7 years ago and they were great, looks like they are getting better and better.
My major complaint, no versatile sound. All their stuff sounds like one big depressing obnoxious song. But that is my complaint with lots and lots and lots of bands. But her vocals give me chills. Defintely one of the best letterman performances I've seen. Better than the pixies, no offense.

Before I forget if you like sleater-kinney I strongly urge you to check out 2 similar bands
the Rondelles and the Hissyfits
they're both really great bands I think and have been around for awhile. A lot of their songs are very SK-esque, so if you like that kinda hard dark emotional sound, you got it. The only major difference is they have a sense of humor to go along with their passion, that I've never found with Sleater Kinney.
