Well OldManInaCoffeeCan, there isn't much more to tell...except it was really cool how intimate the guests were with the band. There was a lot of respect and no groupies whatsoever, and those there seemed to specifically be there for the individual members. It wasn't a loud gathering...everyone was around my age (30-45), except for a couple of younger guys who were there. They were interesting, and I kinda wondered who they were there for...they were both probably 19,20 or so, extremely tall and good looking chaps. Oh, there was this one guy who was VERY weird, and I was very nervous about him. He was about 5' 8, maybe in his 40's, long hair, tight leather pants and black teeshirt, and he just lazed around as if he were strung out with a cup in his hand. He would gravitate towards a small group, quietly act out his 'weary rocker' skit by sprawling out on a peice of furniture, and attempting an interesting pose. No one would bite. So he would move on to a new audience. Anyhow, he was funny. Oh! And when Frank came in, he was wearing glasses, a grey tshirt, and some black basketball shorts that hung a good 5 inches above his knees...and that's it! No shoes or socks, very casual. As I sat against the wall drinking in the whole situation, I would suddenly get the chills because above all the ambient sounds and people chatting, I would suddenly hear Frank Black's voice, and then I would suddenly hearKim Deal's voice. It's hard to explain, but hearing the very distinct voice's of musical idols working in your presence, and actually coming out of their living heads as opposed to a CD, was quite a thrill! Hope that gives a bit more visual OldManInaCoffeeCan...if I can think of any more, I'll get back. Ta ta!

Got tix for the late friday show online before we flew to CA for work. had dinner with a colleague (in-n-out burger-oh yeah!) then up to the wiltern pretty early to get a good spot in the pit. got there abt. 815/820. #'s 2 and 3 inline. a really groovy girl came up to us about 15 minutes later and says "i have three extra tickets. take two and go watch the show" and she wouldn't take any dough...just shoved 'em in our hands and in we went. the Ps were already on--the tix were for the upper Mezzanine level.
the seats were great and the people around us were really cool. had a great view of the stage--the second 1/2 of the first show was great! we stuck around for the encore then jogged out to get in line for the 11 o'clock show. got in line abt. a 1/2 block from the door with even more cool people! :) we got in and went straight to the pit. only about 15 folks were there so we went right to the front. right in front of kim's mic. had a great view of the show. kim smiled at me a few times...or at least it seemed it looked like she was smiling at me since she smiled for 99% of the show.
it was a fantastic time...i'm so glad we had to be in L.A. for work and were able to catch the shows.
here are some pretty bad pix-- http://homepage.mac.com/tobybrown/PhotoAlbum17.html http://homepage.mac.com/tobybrown/PhotoAlbum18.html |

Cool - the guy from Cleve. mentioned the drum stick catch. Thurs., late, Wiltern - Joey missed, bad toss but David caught it. In defense of the toss, it was a long way.
Awesome to hear Smart Alec Eiffel lead off the set. Frank gets such a smart alec look on his face when he sings it.

Hey TRANSMARINE, thanks, that's great, 'preciate the story. Once again, that must have been a helluva night!
I am having a little trouble with the visual of Frank in black basketball shorts that hung 5 INCHES ABOVE his knees. All I can see is Frank looking like Larry Bird from the Celtics in those green, "hot-pants" short basketball shorts. It wasn't really that bad though, was it?
